WHY ALBUMS STILL MATTER

I have to admit, there was a time in my life when I was a music pirate. One of these evil kids you heard about, sitting in my mom’s basement, stealing music from artists and record companies.

I have to admit something else. At the time, I felt like I was doing the right thing.

For decades the recording industry capitalized on the limitations of technology. If I wanted to hear Tag Team’s “Whoomp (There It Is)”, I had to buy it packaged with a bunch of other songs. Other songs I might not like but had to pay for anyway.

Granted, there were singles. But the price breakdown on those never made sense. You really had no choice. You had to buy the album.

Then, technology caught up with the recording industry. I could get on my computer and download whatever I wanted for free. The reason I felt okay about it? I could download only what I wanted.

Remember, this was before a person could jump on YouTube and preview songs. This was before there was a legitimate way to buy digital singles.

When you forked over $13.99 for an album based on the strength of a single, it was a straight-up gamble. All too often you’d end up paying $13.99 for one great song, two mildly-entertaining songs, 5 forgettable nothings, and 4 tracks that bordered on the sonically offensive.

FEATURESWhy Albums Still Matter

song is almost nonsensical in its greatness. When considered as part of a whole, the finale to an album that included “Simple Man”, “Gimme Three Steps”, and “Tuesday’s Gone”, it makes all the sense in the world. “Free Bird” is the only way an album of that magnitude could have ended.

Consider the 80’s. Consider Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction. This is the album I would hand to someone who asked what 80’s metal was. Within those 53 minutes and 52 seconds, you’ll find out about an entire era of music history.

Consider the 90’s. Consider the live performance Nirvana Unplugged, the album that put grunge into the CD players of suburban dads. It’s an album that demands listening from top to bottom.

Consider the 90’s on the east coast. Consider Nas’ Illmatic. The way the album paints a picture of New York, a city that is almost recognizable now, 20 years later. The album, the time and space allowed by an album-length work, it brings that dead city back to life.

The album is an important art form, even in 2015. It can build a world that ends in a “Free Bird” apocalypse of guitars. In can define a generation. It can capture the highs of a one-time public performance. It can stand in as a historical document, an eyewitness account from someone who was there.

I’m a little afraid that the price of stealing music hasn’t been fully-realized yet. That my generation killed an art form. We didn’t just take food from artists’ mouths. We grabbed shovels and started burying something we loved.

It’s okay for the single to become the dominant form in which music is published. Not that I’m giving permission. Not that anyone asked.

It’s just my sincere hope that the album isn’t dead yet. And that I can buy enough of them to make up for the past.

In 1994, the year shouted out at the beginning of “Whoomp”, there was almost no such thing as an informed album purchase. You’d hear one, maybe two songs on the radio. You’d read 60 words about in in Rolling Stone, study the track names on the back of the album, and then grit your teeth and hand over the cash.

Today, I’m an adult. As an adult, I recognize the importance of buying music. I recognize that buying albums by my favorite artists allows those artists to make more music, which is what I want. As an adult, I recognize I’m not really paying for an album. I’m paying for a band’s future, for that next, unwritten album. It was and is wrong to steal music.

I’m not a hardened criminal anymore, but I have to wonder if we are now paying the price for our single-stealing. If we, the Napster generation, killed the album.

The record industry caught on eventually. They figured out people want to buy only those songs they actually want to listen to. Today, this is the primary way people are buying music. The sale of singles has outpaced the sales of albums by a ratio of more than 10 to 1. Lil’ Wayne has released 11 studio albums and a whopping 192 singles, embracing the new landscape. Consider the likelihood, when you get in your car, of listening to an entire album from beginning to end as opposed to shuffling between songs or artists.

Which brings us to the real, difficult question: Does the album matter?

Does it matter that music is packaged and released in hour-long, 12-track form? Is that important?

Yes. I’m here to say that it is.

In the 70’s Lynyryd Skynyrd released their album Pronounced 'Leh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd and the world was introduced to “Free Bird”, the triple-guitar jam that set the standard. Viewed on its own, the
