WHO CARES?
Abiodun Oyewole, “Black Rage”
It’s a world of hurt.It’s a world of hurt.
• 1 billion people in the world can’t read or write.
• 1 billion don’t have access to safe drinking water.
• 750 million are disabled.
• 1 billion are undernourished.
• 25% of the world’s population lacks electricity.
How could one person ever create change?
1 billion people in the world can’t read or write.
That’s why Efren Peñaflorida decided to stock a pushcart with supplies
and make a school on wheels.
In ten years, he’s given a love of learning to thousands of kids from slums in the Philippines.
“Before, I really didn’t care for my life,” says one student. “But then Efren patiently dug me from where I was buried.”
1 billion people don’t have access to safe drinking water.
That’s why bartender Doc Hendley raised money to build water systems in the developing world.
Then he went and did the work himself—in war zones so dangerous that most outsiders wouldn’t go near.
“You can be a bartender in Raleigh, North Carolina [and still] touch thousands of lives.”
750 million people are disabled.
That’s why Darius Weems traveled across the United States in an RV to raise money for muscular dystrophy.
He raised $2 million for research on the disease that will probably kill him by age 30.
“You can’t stop yourself from coming to earth. You can’t stop yourself from leaving earth. The last thing you can do is try to make it better.”
1 billion people around the world are undernourished.
That’s why Diana Lopez planted a garden in the east side of San Antonio, where there
wasn’t a grocery store for miles around.
Now, people from the area grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables.
“I feel change comes slowly sometimes, but all it takes is one person.”

25% of the world’s population lacks electricity.
That’s why 14-year-old William Kamkwambadecided to gather spare parts and
build windmills for his village in Malawi.
His windmills power cell phones, radios, lights, and a pump to bring badly needed water to crops.
“My dream is to finish my education and start a [windmill] company. I’m planning to come up with reliable electricity.”
These people created change.
ACTIVISMIn a world of hurt,
it can make a difference.
What is the power of one person’s actions in the
fight for change?
What needs to be done in your community? • Climb the ladder. • Fight the
power. • Who’s going to do it? • Turn the other cheek. • Stand up for your rights.
• What motivated each of the people in this slide show? • Take care of number
one. • Reach out. • Who has made a difference in your community? How did
they do it? Why? • Not my brother’s keeper • It takes a village. • If you could fix
one problem in the world, what would it be? • Transform yourself. • Change the
world. • What needs to be done in your community? • Climb the ladder. • Fight
the power. • Who’s going to do it? • Turn the other cheek. • Stand up for your
