There was a huge study conducted at the University ofMinnesota, says Director of Health Services, Renee Jacobson. Itshowed that students who had a healthylifestyle did better in college.

Student wellness has been a risingconcern on campus as the winter monthsset in. Fall semester saw a 5 percent increaseof students visiting the Health Servicesoffice. Renee Jacobson, Director of HealthServices comments, I saw about 1,935students in the Fall semester.

Depression was the number onediagnosis from Fall 2011. With that being the case, what can studentsdo to change this. Get out and exercise. A study was done awhile agoinvolving a large group of people that were separated into groups, onewas the control, one got medication, one were told to exercise and thefinal received medication and exercise, says Jacobson. The resultswere stunning, the people who did just the exercise did better than the

people who just took medication. The NMC Wellness & Ergonomic Committee has gone a step

    further. They have started a program for students called HealthyB di H l h Mi d Th i i f l h d

welcomed to attend to learn about becoming healthier. Theincentive to coming. Students who attend will be placed int

drawing to win a $20 gas card, and at ththe semester one lucky student will wingift card to MC Sports.

Flyers are posted around campus abthe events and days and times as well ascalendar. The more interest we get thewill be able to have for the following sesays Jacobson.

2012 Michigan Community College Press Association Judging Form

    Place of award: Third

    Category: Front Page Design

    Headline/title of entry: Sept. 15, Oct. 13, Feb. 2

Contestants name:StaffCollege name: Northwestern Michigan College (White Pine Press)

Judges comments:Like the second place winner in this category, I had to getover the fact that this tab formatted newspaper only allows for one story on the

front page. However, a strong use of the rail on the left side of the page givesreaders a good glimpse to the rest of the presentation. Also, each front pagepackage was well thought out and very creative.
