TT Had. been three weeks since* they had left him alone, as-suming that he was dead. Threeweeks of agony and anger, withthe bitter fire of revenge burn-ing through his insides. CharlieGriffin stirred, the embers of hisfire and pulled the coffee pottoward him, wincing as heleaned too heavily on his shat-tered arm inside the sling. Everymoment of pain brought newdetermination to his mindbitter promise to wipe out everylast one of the gang that hadswept across the plains, stealinghis stock and killing his partner. His lips parted as though

sneering at himself. For a mo-ment he remembered PopWhite's words before he rodeout of town. Take it easy, son, he had told him. Gavinand his gang are killers andit'll take more'n one man tostop 'em. Let the posse run 'emdown.

Charlie had snorted at that.Posse nothing, Pop You don'tknow what it's like to see apartner gunned down in coldblood. You got to feel a half-dozen horses trampling overyour body to know what I wentthrough. I want to get 'em my-selfPop had nodded, then looked

inquiringly at Charlie's arm, helpless within the plaster cast.Mebbe so, son. But jest howyou gonna go about it?A wave of defeat passed over

the tall cowboy, but he recov-ered in a moment, baring histeeth in a grin. I don't knowhow, Pop, but I'll find a way.He nodded, then touched hisspurs to the chestnut mare andloped off down the street. Hisdestination was the foothills ofthe mountain range, an outlaw-ridden section that had longand safely sheltered the bandsthat rode the hoot-owl trail.Well, he could ride them, too,and somewhere in that maze ofhills and gulches, his , trailwould cross that of Gavin'sgang. What happened then wasin the hands of Lady Luck.

But even as he rode in pur-suit, so did the posse. Worddrifted to Charlie that first one, then another, of the gang waseither dead or behind bars. And, as he heard the news,Charlie's anger increased untilhe shook with rage. He didn'twant them jailed where a sur-prise raid could set them free... he wanted them at the endof his gun, seeing what it waslike to go down in a blast ofgunfire

It was only this morning thatCharlie saw the silhouette of theposse's riders on the hill abovehim. He hailed them and rodeforward. Sheriff Hardy toldhim the news, almost gladly,it seemed. We got them all,Charlie . . . that is, all butGavin. Right along we've heardthat he lit out for the border

and most likely he'll stay there. Not much sense trying to chasehim. No, there wasn't much sense

to it at that. Charlie stirred uphis fire again, sipping his coffeeslowly. Mexico was a big place,he thought. A man could hidethere forever. Well; in themorning 'he'd hit the trail forhome, but the rest of his lifehis mind would not be at ease, knowing that a murderer wasriding another trail somewhere, free to kill again whenever itpleased him.The chestnut mare heard the

click of the hoofs on the rocksbefore he did, and whinniedsoftly. Charlie eased his arminto a more comfortable posi-tion and half turned. Out ofthe blackness of the night therider emerged. His horse wastrail-weary and dust-caked. Therider himself was red-eyed withfatigue, but from his stance inthe saddle Charlie saw at oncethat he was fully alert. Hisclothes were covered with dirtand alkali, all but his gun, that swung at his side cleanand glistening with oil.

Beneath his shirt Charlie felthis heart hammering against hisribs. His lips formed a sound-less word . . Gavin The

. outlaw wiped a hand across hisstubble of a beard and snarled,So you walked away that nightafter all. Too bad, mister. Heswung down from the saddleCONTINUED AFTER NEXT STORY. .

ANtod gtoui.d-hahtitd his horse, disdainfully ignoring the' factthat Charlie's gun was on hissaddle roll only a few feet away.

Charlie noticed it, too, andrealized what it meant. Gavinwas hoping he'd go for it . . .any excuse to kill him. Therewasn't anybody in the territorywho could beat Gavin to thedraw. The outlaw strode intothe light of the fire, only to bemet with a wry grin. Charliesaid, They told me you beatit for the border. What hap-pened . - . you cqme back tofinish your job?

I come back because theywon't be looking for me. Youwere a fool to stick around inthese hills. I thought you wereone of the boys.

Now you got to kill me, Isuppose? The outlaw laughed sharply.

Looks that way, don't it?His hand rested lightly on hiships, waiting to see what wouldhappen. But Charlie made nomotion toward his gun, stillwithin easy reach. He lifted hiscast into a better spot in thesling and reached for his sackof tobacco in his shirt pocket.Deliberately, he rolled a cig-arette.

You shouldn't have comeback, Gavin.''It was too matter of fact, the

way he said that. The outlawshifted nervously. No? Why?That fool posse will be busybringing the rest of the boysup against a jury. Think they'llworry about me? As far as theyknow I lit out for Mexico* andyou followed me down. If younever show up again it meansyou're still looking. What am Igonna lose?

Your life, Gavin. I'm gonnakill you.A sarcastic laugh burst from

desire to kill creeping Into hiebody. Somewhere a coyotehowled and broke the unearth*

the outlaw. With what, thatbum wing that I smashed? Toobad it wasn't your head like Ithought it would be. His facedrew into a scowl. You'vecaused me enough trouble forten guys. I could've gottenclear off with that load of beef

-if you didn't manage to get aposse on my trail so fast. I toldthe boys not to leave anyonealive when they raided the place, and they didn't make' sure ofthe job when they ran youdown. I should have come backmyself and made sure.

Charlie nodded agreeably.Yep, that was your big mis*

    j ?RflSi:ij:i;.:?^5si ?^:ir:^:'3^i longer. Don't draw: :-:- : -:::>:::x:::-:':-:::-;;::

''* screamed. His hand' : ' ''jjH**'** red streak as he tttake. Now you're gonna makeanother. You're gonna try tokill me.

That won't be a mistake, buddy, that'll be easy. I liketo pull irons with a guy who canuse one, but in this case I don'tcare if you can or not. It'stough on you that it had to bethis way, but I'm not takingany chances. Go ahead andreach for your iron.

Gavin's hand hovered abovehts gun butt, waiting for Char-lie to move, but the cowboyheld his position, still .grin-ning. Gavin'* hand began toshake with the suspense, the

ly stillness. The outlaw's eyeswere a fiery red, seething witha blood-lust.Gavin blurted, Well, go

ahead. You're getting a chanceat me. Reach for your gun . . .you got time It's there, allready for you. Go ahead andgrab it. You said you weregonna kill menow do it

But instead of reaching, Char*lie barely shifted his position, favoring his arm. His eyes weretight slits as he watched theoutlaw. A smile of anticipationtugged at the corners of hismouth as he watched Gavinbecoming furious over Charlie'srefusal to defend himself. Char-lie's voice was so tow Gavinbarely heard it. I am going tokill you, Gavin. I swore thatI'd get you and now I have.Maybe my way of killing isknowing that you're going tobe hung for my murder. Goahead and shoot, I'm waitingto see you do it *The outlaw could stand it no

    then hewas a blur*

reached forhis gun, but even as he whippedit from the leather there was acrash of thunder and a bulletthudded into his chut. Gavin'seye* went wide in amazementhe tried to bring his gun intoline, but his hand went limp.Slowly, his knees buckled andhe collapsed in the dirt. Evenas his eyet closed in death hecould see the ugly snout of thederringer Charlie had concealedin his chest, covered almostcompletely by fingers that bare*ly had strength enough to pullthe trigger. Yei, barely enough... but enough.

    ADVCRT/SMC/fTWHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT

PIMPLESAcne, Blackheads, and otherexternally caused Skin Blemishes^tfHEN pimply skin is your prob-'y lem, the first thing to get straightis that you can and should do some-thing about it. To develop theattractiveness of your face is notmere vanity. It is an open sesametowards bringing the real YOUcloser to other people and givingyour personality the poise and con-fidence it needs. Your good qualities intelligence, character, dignity all go to naught... are completelycancelled out by a skin that nobodyloves to touch, Remember, theYOUthatpeople see first is your face.

    SKIN MOB16MSDEMAND IMMEDIATE CARE

Medical statistics tell us that blem-ished skin usually occurs fromadolescence on through adult life. The problem at the adolescent stageis serious enough to deserve atten-tive care as a family matter. Inadulthood, when life's responsibili-ties are so much weightier, it isdoubly important to exert greateffort to eliminate these blemishes. And, there is no better time to getpimples under control than now.

DON'T A&USl SKINThe Attt instinctive reaction to pimplyand blackheads is to squeeze them outwith your fingers.A bit of experi-mentation alongprovides convinc-ing proof that thissucceeds only ininflaming yourskin and spread-ing the infection.

MICROSCOPE SHOWS IMPORTANTBASIS FOR EXTERNALLY CAUSEDPIMPLES ANO BLACKHEADS

    Let's take a look through the microscopeto tee what's behind those unsightlypimples. The high-powered lenses showyour skin coated with a covering whichoriginated from two sourcesone, intern-ally and the other, externally.The internal substances on your skininclude dead cells, residue from the sweatglands, and a high quantity of oil excretedby the sebaceous glands. A most importantfactor in skin disorders occurs when thou-sands of these tiny sebaceous glands dis-charge more oil than the skin can use forlubrication. Unless special care is given,the oil forms a heavy film which attractsforeign matter to your skin milch as anyoil mop picks up dust. These infectiousexternal substances may be classified intothree general groups;

    1. Airborne materials such as dust, pollens, condensation products ofsmoke, vapors, etc.3. Materials brought in contact withthe skin, such as tiny fragments ofclothing, bedding, cosmetics.3. Micro-organisms such as. bacteriaand fungi.

See the difference between a healthy skinand a pimply skin in the microscopicreproductions below

TRY THii SENSIBLE WAYTwo sensible aims to achieve in control-ling this skin condition are: to clear thepores of clogging matter, and to inhibitthe excessive oiltness of the skin. Towardthese ends, Dornol Products' researchmakes available two formulas. One is toaid in thorough cleansing by highly deter-gent penetration which simplifies the re-moval of waste and foreign matter. Theother is to discourage oiliness with clini-cally-proved ingredients, and to kill infec-

tious bacteria often associated withexternally caused pimples and blackheads.
