Around two years of age for dogs, and about age four for cats, their metabolism starts to slow down. This certainly does not mean that their general activity slows down, just their metabolism. At this age we need to be very careful about diet, ensuring that they are not putting on too much extra weight. It is much easier to keep the weight off then getting it off later. If you are unsure your pet is overweight, many vet-erinary clinics are very happy to help you determine an ideal weight for your pet. One surefire method is to have a feel of your pet’s ribs. Cats and dogs (and yes, even people) have no muscle group directly over the ribs as they curve over the side of the chest. If you feel this area there should be skin and ribs. Anything extra is just that…extra.
During adulthood, dogs and cats should be lively and curious about the world around them. They should be on a good quality diet that is designed for an adult and formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. If you are unsure about your pet’s diet, look for the AAFCO statement on the bag. This will tell you if the food is specifically formulated or clinically tested for an adult dog or cat. If you cannot find this information, contact the company and ask. The food company should be able to provide you with a concise answer about: who formulated the diet, how they do quality control for their diets, and what age range the diet is formulated for. You want a diet that is formulated by a veterinary nutritionist or, better yet, a group of veterinary nutritionists.
Finally, adult animals should be in to see the veteri-narian to get a full physical every year. Any pet with an ongoing health problem will most likely need to be seen more often to help develop and continue op-timum life style choices. At these exams you should bring a list of any questions you have about what your pet is eating, his bathroom habits, and any odd chang-es you have noticed. It is a fantastic idea to find out ex-actly how much your pet drinks and eats before going to the clinic – this provides a wealth of information for the veterinary team. Not having this information not only makes it more difficult to detect early disease in our pets, but also does not provide you with the best use of your time with the veterinary team. This is es-pecially true for cats. Cats are fantastic predators, but they are still very small compared to most other pred-ators. Because of this, they are still considered a prey
species. Prey species are much more likely to hide illness or pain because any sign of weakness makes them a target for predators. Even our indoor “pan-thers”, who hunt nothing but a laser light, have this mindset. Signs of disease in cats are very subtle and they can be missed even by an experienced eye. Get-ting a full physical every year allows subtle changes to be detected and what appear to be “meaningless” changes will be discussed with the veterinarian.
As animals age, their diet and body conditions change as well. They are more likely to develop inju-ry or disease. Next time we will look at some of these aging changes and some signs of disease to watch for as our furry friends age.

As the publisher of “Whats On” - Nanaimo I’ve tried to focus on the needs of every age group. It has been my observation that in many cases local event listings in some publications have a dispro-portionate focus on one segment of society to the neglect of others. Often the segments that are ig-nored are large demographics that are active, vital, and have significant community influence. In the Nanaimo “Whats On” digest you can always count on calendar listings for the symphony, concerts and theatre as well as sports listings and special local happenings. In addition to this you might find a listing for a seniors scrabble tournament, a place to save money as a senior, or even a local farmers market. My hope with this is that anyone of any age in Nanaimo can use “Whats On” maga-zine to connect with activities and events that ap-peal to them. In this new column; “60+ and Going Strong”, my goal is to publish articles that are rel-evant and informative for anyone in the 60-90 age range. My own grandmother is 98 and I know that one thing that’s kept her going is her engagement
in local activities. It’s the old “use it or lose it” rule of thumb. I also know that it was a hard decision for everyone when it came time for her to move out of her life-long home into an assisted living facility. So whether you are in the 60+ age group or perhaps you have a parent in that age bracket please pick up “Whats On” every month and by all means let me know if there’s an activity that you feel should be included and I’ll be sure to try to include it in the next month’s edition. If you have stories to share about something interesting and relevant to the 60+ set please feel free to send them my way - who knows maybe your story will end up in the next issue of “Whats On”!

The Vancouver Island Symphony under the artistic direction of Pierre Simard is a professional orchestra based in Nanaimo presenting a season of 12 performances at the Port Theatre.
The theme for the Symphony's 19th Season is Passport to Great Entertainment with the Timeless Treasures Series taking the audience on a musical journey to Paris, London, Madrid, St. Petersburg and home to Nanaimo!

Stretching can be one of the very best tools for helping you achieve your goals in your fitness training program. Not only does stretching feel good it also has many side benefits.
One such benefit of stretching is that it helps circulate blood and oxygen to the joints keeping them supple and healthy. The blood itself carries nutrients and vitamins to muscles so they can heal and rebuild. Stretching also flushes the body of toxins and lactic acid that create trigger points (knots) that bind muscle fibers together, preventing the muscle from functioning at its maximum potential. If you don't have sufficient flexibility in your back, hips and glutes, you may develop poor form which can lead to injury.
In my experience as a Personal Trainer and Athletic coach stretching, done properly, can be a very useful part of your warm up routine. It is, however, always important to listen to your body when stretching and it should never be painful. In general, when adding stretching into your routine, whether it be sport specific or weight training related, you need to be sure that you are stretching the appropriate muscles to advance your activity and not to over stretch. Overstretching, or not stretching properly, is,

TO STRETCH OR NOT TO STRETCH?
If you don't have sufficient flexibility in your back, hips and
glutes, you may develop poor form which can lead to injury.
WHATS ON FITNESS
arguably, as bad as not stretching at all depending of course on your existing level of fitness.
As your personal trainer I can assess where your muscles are most tight and from there devise a flexibility plan for you. Such a plan includes how long you should hold stretches and how many repetitions you should do. Proper stretching can lengthen those tight muscles preventing injury allowing you to enjoy your chosen hobby or sport.
Make regular stretching a goal for your new year! Be sure to have a flexibility component in your training and you will be amazed at the gains you will receive from just 10-30mins of flexibility training.
Happy New Year and here’s to another great year of gains!

It’s also important to remember, the price you choose will greatly impact the time it takes to sell your home .
It’s no secret though, that the strongest time for local market activity is the Spring. The “Spring” however can begin in February some years and March or even April in others. The Strong market can end in June some years, or like this year, carry right through the Summer and Fall.
It has been a good year for the local Real Estate market compared to the last few. Prices have stabilized and volume of sales has increased. As a home Seller, now is a good time generally to get your house listed as inventory is low and Buyer demand remains brisk.
Remember though, proper marketing, good staging and presentation, and a good price on your home are key factors. We tell all our Seller clients the 3 major items that affect your home’s sale are;
1. Price
2. Condition
3. Marketing
Don’t get drawn in to the, “But my neighbor sold for this…” scenario. A good REALTOR® will do a thorough market analysis and give you a price range that will get the job done, in the least amount of time with the least amount of stress.
If you would like a complimentary market evaluation of your home, we are available and ready ANY time of year!

Is it the right time to list?In reality, any time you want or need to sell your home is the right time for you to list. With a professional REALTOR® who has a good marketing system in place, your home will be properly presented regardless of the time of year.
... proper marketing, good staging and presentation, and a good price
on your home are key factors.

”Examining old maps and charts of the city is fascinating” said museum curator David Hill-Turner. “For example, they show railways and mines that are no longer there.”
Nanaimo’s most detailed maps show places none of us have seen: the vast tunnel network under the city, all drawn to scale. “The exhibition’s centrepiece is the coal works map” he said. “The seven meter long map documents all the works from the Southfield Mine (the Cedar landfill) north to Brechin Point and east beyond Protection Island.”
In addition to Nanaimo, the exhibition will also examine the E&N Railway land grant. To attract private development of the railway, an offer that included over 1.5 million acres of land was offered to bidders. While often considered a “giveaway”, the grant was important to attracting development and settlers.
Detailed maps would not be possible without surveying and cartographic tools. A display of equipment from the 1880s to the 1920s will complement the exhibition of maps and charts.
The exhibition opens Tuesday, January 21 and runs until Saturday, March 22, 2014. The museum is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.
The Nanaimo Museum is located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, beside Serious Coffee, and is open Monday – Saturday 10am-5pm. For more information please visit www.nanaimomuseum.ca or call 250 753-1821.

All-season tires versus all-weather tires; what is the difference? The names may be similar and it sounds like they both do the same thing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Let’s start with all-season tires. The name does not describe how this tire really performs. These tires are only recommended for three seasons: spring, sum-mer and fall. All-season tires go best with a set of designated winter tires because deep snow and sheer ice are not friends of these tires. They will get you out of a freak snow storm, but if used all winter, they will potentially make your winter long and treacherous. They are designed to work in temperatures above 7°C. Once the temperature goes below that, the rub-ber compound tends to become too hard to grip dry or wet pavement and as a result, braking and handling become less effective; a very dangerous situation.
Now let’s look at the all-weather tire. This tire is a true four season tire. The all-weather tire is marked with the severe service emblem for winter condi-tions, just like a winter tire, but it can stay on your ve-hicle all year round. These are great for people who
do not want to have to deal with winter to summer changeovers every season. Put them on and leave them on. Engineers have designed the tread pattern, along with the high tech compounds to handle snow, slush, rain, and sun; they can handle all that Mother Nature can throw at you and keep going.
Nokian, the pioneer of the winter tire, has the WRG2 and WRG3all-weather tires that will fit most car and SUV applications.
For the pickup drivers among us, the Nokian Rotiiva AT and Multi Mile Wild Country XTX may be an alternative that best suit your needs. They are not classed as all-weather tires, however, they are four season all terrain tires that have the severe service emblem. Both even come in 10ply!
Want to see if your vehicle is suitable for a set of all-weather tires? Avoid the lineups, com-fortably contact us from your home or office at www.KalTire.com .
Have you made the switch from all season to all weather tires? If so, tell us about your experience!

Imagine you are out for a stroll around Westwood Lake. The lake is clear and calm with its surface inter-rupted only by the gentle January rains. Your mind is peacefully wandering from thought to thought when out of the bushes crashes a black bear!!! In less than a second your body goes from calm and relaxed to a state of high alert. Your fight/flight response kicks in anda number of changes occur:
The nervous system increases our heart rate, blood pressure, and insulin resistance in order to provide our muscles with more oxygen and en-ergy in case we need to run or fight. It also shuts down our digestive and immune systems as these systems typically require a lot of energy and do not help us fight or run from the bear.
The next step is the release of stress hormones. These hormones, called catecholamines, reduce factual learning ability, working memory, and the ability to focus our attention. These hormones cause the liver to release more sugar in the bloodstream for energy. Cholesterol levels are increased in the blood as they are the building blocks for more stress hormones. Cholesterol is also important in blood clotting in case the bear actually catches you and takes a bite!
Eventually, you have either fled or fought the bear. The stress is gone, and serotonin is released to bring all the above processes back to normal. Balance and health is restored.
But unlike running from a bear, today’s stressors don’t end. Busy lives, workloads, and unhealthy stress can be maintained for years. Unfortunately, the effect of continually high blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol is unhealthy. Continually low levels of digestive functioning, immune sys-tem function, and serotonin are equally damaging.
Now that the holidays are over, extended family has left, and our expectations for the perfect holiday season are dealt with, it may be an appropriate time to discuss the impact of stress on our health.
So for 2014, as you focus on better eating habits and more exercise, make sure to include time for more fun and relaxation. This keeps stress hor-mones, and their negative effects to a minimum. Write yourself a prescription for more spa days or time at the beach. Your health depends on it!

A farmer walked into an attorneys office wanting to file for a divorce. The attorney asked, May I help you? The farmer said, Yea, I want to get one of those dayvorces. The attorney said, Well do you have any grounds? The farmer said, Yea, I got about 140 acres. The attorney said, No, you don't understand, do you have a case? The farmer said, No, I don't have a Case, but I have a John Deere. The attorney said, No you don't understand, I mean do you have a grudge? The farmer said, Yea I got a grudge, that's where I park my John Deere. The attorney said, No sir, I mean do you have a suit? The farmer said, Yes sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays. The exasperated attorney said, Well sir, does your wife beat you up or anything? The farmer said, No sir, we both get up about 4:30. Finally, the attorney says, Okay,
let me put it this way. WHY DO YOU WANT A DIVORCE? And the farmer says, Well, I can never have a meaningful conversation with her.

Whether a snowy January/February, a soggy spring or even another June-uary, as the past couple of June deluges have so dubbed the usually sunny and dry month of June in these parts, you can be sure the rain will return. They don’t call it the “wet coast” for nothing. When the rains come you had better hope that your perimeter drain is free and clear of any blockages. If it’s not, what happens is the water builds up in the soil around your foundation until the pressure becomes so great that it begins to seep, or more often pour, through the foundation. Once this happens you now have a serious flooding issue that requires major
excavation. I personally prefer to avoid disaster whenever possible so knowing that flooding, due to poorly maintained perimeter drains, can be an issue I chose to head that potential problem off at the proverbial pass. I called a friend from my BNI (if you don’t know BNI you should Google it!) Tim Magnus at Hoedown Excavating
This past fall was pretty dry by Nanaimo standards. November had an almost record number of sunshine hours and even most of December, while not sunny, really didn’t give us much in the way of precipitation. Because of all this good fortune you can pretty much guarantee that we will have to pay the piper at some point.
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION...
... you can be sure the rain will return. They don’t call it the
“wet coast” for nothing.

(he “digs” being in your yard) in to perform a perimeter drain inspection at my home here in Nanaimo. The perimeter drain, in case you don’t know, is typically buried about 4 to 6 feet below ground level and carries the rain water from your gutters out to the city pipes and away from your home. The inspection was very affordable less than a couple hundred and not only did they drag out some old drain pipe and some other debris they also flushed the entire line and gave my drainage system a clean bill of health. With the perimeter drain professionally inspected I can breath easier knowing that water is not building up around my foundation. I’ve seen what has happened to some of my neighbours when their perimeter drainage failed and it’s
pretty ugly not to mention expensive and a major inconvenience. Thanks Tim for the peace of mind...now all I have to do is wait for it to rain!

You know the self I mean...; the active, fit, tol-erant, understanding, model-worthy and wealthy version of yourself? In fact even if you are, or ap-pear to be, all those things there are still many things you can do in terms of personal better-ment. Sometimes the biggest barrier to realiz-ing our ideal-self is, in fact, our very own ‘self’. Specifically, we all have what psychologists call ‘self-talk’ or that ‘inner-voice’. Unfortunately, our self-talk may be to say things such as: “I hate Mondays” or “I’m so bored”. This kind of nega-tive thought process can be counter-productive in terms of the effect it has on our motivation. Quite literally we can ‘talk ourselves’ out of being mo-tivated. After all if you’ve just told yourself that you ‘hate’ something you’ve just given yourself permission to dis-engage and thus fail.
My 1st year Psych professor used to say that one role of the therapist was to teach people to change the channel of their self-talk. If you can stop and actually listen to what you may be saying to yourself you can then stop and actively change the message which will unfailingly change your
behaviour. This can then help you become more like the ‘you’ that you want to be! It’s amazing to think that the path to self improvement actually starts in the gray matter located in your head! Some of the most fun and most successful people I know are the ones always talking about the ex-citing and amazing experiences they’ve had. The recurring theme with these people is their posi-tive attitude. The great thing is that nobody can tell you what kind of attitude to have except you. It is fitting, then, that 2014 is the Chinese year of the horse which, by my own interpretation, is the year of the ‘free spirit’. So I hope in some way these words will free your spirit and allow you to unleash the power of a positive attitude in your life. Like the song says “Free your mind, and the rest will follow.” Here’s wishing you a terrific start to what absolutely can be an exciting and spirited year.

SaysSimonFREE YOUR MINDThe beginning of a new year is considered by many as a time to set goals and plan for the future. Very often around this time of year we are inundated with messages about ways to keep our “New Years” resolutions and pursue the attainment of our “ideal-self.” Simon Rideout

1. Cancel any credit card balance protection in-surance. Balance Protection Insurance is rare-ly funded and is a ploy of the banks to ensure that your credit card balance never goes down.
2. Replace any mortgage insurance purchase through your bank with life insurance pur-chased through a life insurance agent so that you have proper protection and are receiving good value for your money.
3. Stop using the balance from one card to pay the minimum payment on another. If that is the only way to make ends meet, meet with a Debt Relief Specialist to explore other options.
4. If you’ve been trying to get out of debt on your own and it’s not been working, get help!
5. Avoid any type of consolidation loan if it con-solidates only part of your debt.
6. If your minimum payments are greater than 15% of your net income, get debt help now.
7. Always make your minimum payments on time. Late payments cost more because you pay interest on the full balance owing even if you are only one day late.
8. Always keep your credit card below your credit limit; most credit cards have an over-limit fee.
9. Always pay more than the required minimum payment; if you make minimum only payments it may take you a lifetime to repay the debt. .
10. Avoid bankruptcy. There are many other op-tions to explore before choosing to go bank-rupt. A bankruptcy is a very serious decision that makes sense for very few people. Ask for a second opinion before making the decision to go bankrupt.
11. Avoid loans from friends and family unless they come with NO strings attached.
