byline [Name] Abby: Before you came to The Latham

School, where were you studying?

Edgar: For the past 7 years, I was living with my family in China and so I went to an international school there.

Jahan: Did you always have to eat with chopsticks when you were living in China?

Edgar: No, it depended on where I was and what I was eating. If I went to a Chinese restaurant I would have to because it is seen as rude not to do so.

Abby: Is it hard to eat with chopsticks?

Edgar: Not really. You jut have to know where to put your fingers and how to use them. Oh, and you NEVER stab/poke your food with the sticks; you must pick it up!

Jahan: What was your favourite Chinese dish?

Edgar: It would have to be fried rice.

Abby: Do you speak Chinese?

Edgar: Yes, a bit, as I studied it for 7 years!

Faith: How long have you been teaching?

Ms Herrieth: 8 years but this is my second year at The Latham School.

Mina: What are some of the highlights of your teaching at The Latham School?

Ms Herrieth: I really couldn’t say as I love all of it!

Mina: What is your favourite subject to teach?

Ms Herrieth: I enjoy teaching Phonics and Maths.

Faith: What is your favourite thing about teaching?

Ms Herrieth: I love spending time with children!

Faith: Besides teaching, what other things do you like to do?

Ms Herrieth: Making new friends, shopping and travelling.

Mina: Where is your favourite place to be?

Ms Herrieth: I love going to Bahari Beach and Kawe Beach for the fish.

News from Year 9

In Year 9, we have been studying many different topics varying from weather and climate to describing cities in French. Another thing that we have enjoyed learning about is the Peasant’s Revolt in 1381. ‘I really like the book that we are reading in English class,’ said Abigail. ‘Charles Dickens was a great author and Oliver Twist is really interesting.’ In Science, we have been reviewing the respiration system, which is all about how we breathe. We have also been looking at the periodic table and learning some of the names of different elements. The highlight has been having the opportunity to get on the new courts and learn some new hockey skills in PE lessons. We are looking forward to the many more exhilarating topics to come in this academic year!

Early Years

Years 1 & 2

News from the Classroom We’ve had a very busy start to the term with lots of new pupils who have all settled in really well and are enjoying our new routines. Our current topic is ‘All about me’ and so we have been sharing information all about us and our families. We have been cooking and cleaning in our role play kitchen and we are particularly loving our outdoor fun including balls skills, trike riding and fun splash!

We have been learning how to use number lines in numeracy and they help us to add and take away numbers. We know how to explain the differences between living and non-living things. We have also been learning lots of new words and can spell words with many more letters in them now too.

Year 3 Our topic this half of term is all about mountains. We have learnt how mountains are formed. We learnt the names of the highest mountains on each continent and we were able to find them on a map. We even managed to learn all our lines for our assembly telling the rest of the school all about mountains!

Year 5 & 6 Year 5 and 6 have been thrown straight in the deep end with the complicated, interesting and terribly sad poem, ‘The Highwayman’. We have learnt lots of new techniques and vocabulary and even created our own alternative endings to the poem to make it happier! In topic, we have been learning about climates and biomes from around the world and have made our own mini biomes in a bottle and bag. ‘I really like being in this class,’ said newcomer Phillip, ‘because when we work in groups, we really help each other.’

We are currently thoroughly enjoying reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and we have especially enjoyed creating character profiles of all the hilariously different characters. It’s great to read Roald Dahl – he would have been 100 years old this month if he were still alive!

Year 7 & 8 In English, Year 7 and 8 work together and we have been set an assignment which is all about our new book, ‘Esperanza Rising’. We have to paraphrase, summarise and quote from different sections of the book, which is all about a girl who was rich but lost everything when her father died.

Science innovation By Abby (Year 9)

Since we’ve begun EEA’s, it is clear that these sessions are going to be one of my favourite parts of the day! This EEA is bases on exactly what its name states, Science!

Throughout this academic year, we will be working on projects concerning different topics in Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology. We aim to present these projects to other members of our school community. We are currently trying to make a rocket. We have come up with a theory of how it might work and we are in the testing phase of the project right now.

Extension and Enrichment Activities

At the Latham School, we are super lucky to have the opportunity to try out lots of new activities in our afternoon Extension and Enrichment sessions. This year has seen many new activities being added alongside some long-term favourites. Here is a bit more from a small selection of the many that we can chose from.

Choir by Mira (Year 9)

and Doreen (Year 6)

In Choir, we have been learning lots of fun songs that come from musicals. We’ve learnt ‘Wouldn’t it be Luverly’ from My Fair Lady; ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ which is so tricky to sing as it’s so fast and ‘Tomorrow’ from Annie. It’s great to learn some songs that we have never heard before and are all favourites from musicals that Mrs Maregeli has enjoyed since she was our age!

Art for Artists By Jahan (Year 6) & Nicole (Year 6)

In Art for Artists, we have been learning how to draw Tinga Tinga pictures. We were taught how to draw giraffe, elephants and rhinos and then we drew some animals. We used our imagination to think of different colours to paint the animals. We then added in a drawing of Mount Kilimanjaro. We really like Art for Artists because we enjoy drawing and painting especially animals and the physical features that surround them. We love learning different techniques of creating pictures.
