President’s Letter

Hello from my patio. It’s a nice place to sit and reflect after a long day of work. I’ve a refreshing can of Bitburger by my side and am hoping that my Pilsner fermenting away in the basement will be nearly as delicious.

As I sit here and think about the world’s current hot-topics (politics, social unrest, scandal), I am gratefully reminded of our interesting and wonderful group of brewing enthusiasts. I enjoy that we come together with a positive sense of purpose: having fun, doing good, and learning together. We are more than a social club and outlet for beer nerds to gather around. We openly and humbly share our knowledge and passion, and in doing so, we make our community a better place.

So raise your next glass to the Barons. Think about why our club is important to you, and what you want to see us do as we continue to grow. Surely we will remain a fun place to enjoy and learn about fermented things, but let’s also focus on being the place that brightens a person’s day, week and month.

If you’d like to share your thoughts will us, join the Board for our next meeting. You’ll find us at Bert’s Bar in St Francis (3907 S Lake Dr) on September 7th at 7:00pm. Come on by and enjoy a drink and some conversation while we talk about important club business and issues.

I am looking forward to seeing you along with our guests from Black Husky soon. Keep brewing and don’t forget to share!

Prosit,

Jon

What a great meeting last month! I can’t thank Baron member, Jonathan Ettlie, enough for arranging the Denny Conn meeting in July. Denny’s beer evaluation presentation was perfect for the many club activities we participate in throughout the year. Thank you, Denny, for taking time out of your schedule to join us for memorable club meeting! Denny and Drew have signed some books for us and they will be available to win as picnic and Christmas raffle items. Our August meeting will be another great one. Tim and Toni Eichinger, founders and head brewer of Black Husky will be visiting to talk about the recent move to Milwaukee and new brewery which opened just a couple of weeks ago. Until recently, Black Husky has had fairly limited distribution throughout Wisconsin so this will be a great opportunity to sample Tim’s outstanding beers and talk shop with one of the best commercial brewers in the Midwest. We’ll once again be looking for homebrews for the August meeting. Please email me at [email protected] in advance of the meeting if you’d like to have your homebrew on tap. We should have plenty of room on the jockey boxes for this meeting. If you supply a homebrew, we ask that you to give a small description of your beer at the meeting so members can sample it and provide feedback. The usual $20 reimbursement applies. Cheers! Josh

Interested in attending the next Officer’s Meeting?

The Board meeting is open to all members, and after the meeting stick around for a social time. Come out and try a new place to drink and see what’s on Tap. Next Location is

Bert’s Bar (3907 S. Lake Dr, St. Francis) Guest Member’s from the last meeting: 1. Jared Sutliff 2. Simon McConico 3. Dan Schlosser 4. David and Carolyn Stanton 5. Mike Schwartz 6. Patrick McHugh Thanks for joining us. 7pm Sharp for meeting.

We had 111, which included 7 new members and 3 guests, in attendance for the last month’s general meeting. Comparatively speaking we exceeded July ’15 meeting attendance, which were 100. I’ll say again, keep up the very strong summer attendance; our presenters and membership alike enjoy the dynamic of a full meeting. With the new members, we have nearly crossed the 200 club members’ threshold, with 199 registered / paid members for 2016. All of the Great Taste tickets have sold. As of August 1st, 39 tickets have been collected for a $3,060 total. 19 tickets have yet to be paid for. July we deposited $3,410, which includes the aforementioned Great Taste money and $350 from meeting fees / membership renewals. The general checking account as of August 16, 2016 is a healthy $8,969.81. Last, thanks to a fellow Baron, Tim Minger, I have begun discussions with a CPA. The CPA is volunteering his time and therefore is feedback will be in the form of a report and not a formalized audit, which has a different connotation. I have reviewed the initial draft from the CPA and have provided comments, which will result in a report update. The final report may be available as soon as next month’s officer meeting; however, it may be a safer bet to target the October officer meeting. When the report is complete, I will summarize in my Treasurer notes for the month and will be happy to share with all those that are interested. I will however share some of the preliminary comments from the CPA. (1) “[Our club] does an excellent job of maintaining transparency in the area by publishing meeting attendance and revenues in the [Baron Mind.]” (2) “[R]ecorded receipts appear reasonable when compared to [revenue.]” I am actively working with the CPA to refine the club's documentation practices. Last, in terms of current action items recommended: we need more consistently backup QuickBooks, and enter expenditures at time of payment rather than at time of bank account recognition. Prost!
