Being Effective
GET THE KNOWLEDGE YOU NEED
CONVERT YOUR KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTION
ENSURE COMPANYWIDE ACCOUNTABILITY
Get the Knowledge You Need• Ask what needs to be done:
• Note that question is not “What do I want to do”.
• Get the knowledge you need by asking what needs to be done, and take the questions seriously.
• Once you know the to-do list, set priorities.
• Do one task at a time.
• The effective executives resets the priorities rather than moving on to no. two from the original list.
Get the Knowledge You Need• Ask what’s right for the enterprise:
• Don’t focus on what’s right for individuals (i.e. owners, investors, employees or customers.)
• What is right for the organization as a whole isn’t always right for individual stakeholders.
• Does not guarantee that right decisions will be made.
• Failure to ask the question virtually , it guarantees the wrong decision.
Convert Knowledge Into Action • Develop action plans:
• Set a plan that specifies results and constraints compatible with the organization’s goals.
• Revise your plan often to reflect new opportunities.
• Executives are doers.
• Action plans are the statement of intentions rather than commitments.
• It needs to be a system for checking results against expectations.
• Has to be the basis for executives to measure time.
