What makes a human different than an animal?

1 Corinthians 2:11For what man knoweth the things of a man, save

the spirit of man which is in him?...Ecclesiastes 3:21

Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth

downward to the earth?

John 3:5–7Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that

which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again

1 Corinthians 15:50…flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of

An unsaved man has a live soul, but he has a dead Spirit

Ephesians 4:18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated

from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

1 Corinthians 2:14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the

Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are

spiritually discerned.

• The New Birth gives man a new nature.

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which

is born of the Spirit is spirit.

• The new nature cannot sin1 John 3:9

9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because

he is born of God.

Conflict of Interest

• When the New Man is born in a Believer the Old Man does not die. Two natures now fight for possession of the same house.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the

flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Romans 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in

Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 7:20-2520 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it,

but sin that dwelleth in me.21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is

present with me.22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into

captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from

the body of this death?25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then

with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Philippians 3:3…and have no confidence in the flesh.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Put the old nature on a diet

Hebrews 12:1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a

cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the

race that is set before us,

• All weights are not sins• But all sins are weights– Even a good work can become a weight if it

becomes the focus of your life (Church work, social work, exct.)

How to determine what is weight

• Main question of all life's activities:What difference will this make in eternity?

Matthew 6:24No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and

love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Romans 6:1616 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants

to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Philippians 4:6-86 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made

Matthew 6:20-2120 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor
