Outline
Bill & Melinda Gates want to invest in a new kind of school.
Budget is unlimited.
You are in charge of designing the layout of the school.
Experiment How much of your $5 would you give?
Food shortages in Malawi are affec3ng more than 3 million children. In Zambia, severe rainfall deficits have resulted in a 42% drop in the maize produc3on from 2000. As a result, an es3mated 3 million Zambians face hunger. More than 11 million people in Ethiopia need immediate food assistance.
This is Rokia.
Her life would be changed for the beLer as a result of your financial giN. With your support, and the support of other caring sponsors, Save the Children will work with Rokia’s family and other members of the community to help feed her, provide her with an educa3on and basic medical care.
Experiment, part 2 How much of your $5 would you give?

when we feel empathy for an individual

Personas are not average users Personas are the most challenging users we want to cater for. If we make them happy, we can be sure that everyone in between will be happy too.
"If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."”

Some (almost) live interviews…
Create a persona for a child at the school.

How the hamster sees it
What the hamster does next
"If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person's point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own"

THINKING
What's the persona’s questions?
FEELING What's the persona happy / sad / worried about?
Exploration of ideas
Give yourself and your
colleagues permission to sketch
Make space for your sketches
"Sure, the act of creating a sketch can help an individual designer work through concepts and ideas. But more often than not, a significant - if not greater - part of the value comes in encouraging its social life." Bill Buxton

Design studio technique
1. What is the problem we’are trying to solve?
Susan struggles to find her way around the school.
BECAUSE There are too many staircases, and they all look the same.
BECAUSE She has never been able to tell left from right, so she finds it more difficult than most to navigate through spaces.
BECAUSE She feels too anxious to explore because she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to find her way back, and she doesn’t want to get in trouble for being late.
How might we help Susan to find her way around the school confidently and without asking anyone?
Four-ups
Based on your research:
interviews, personas, journey maps
You are going to create a sketch
of the ideal ‘new’ school.
