WHAT IS COLD CHAINThe cold chain is a logistical system which manages temperature, often between 2 – 8degrees Celsius. It is a series of distribution activities which continuously maintain thistemperature in order to protect the temperature-sensitive cargo from manufacture tothe point of consumption. It is used to preserve and to extend and ensure the shelflife of products, such as fresh agricultural produce, seafood, frozen food, photographicfilm, chemicals, and pharmaceutical drug.Cold chain goods are perishable and always en route towards end use or destination,even when held temporarily in cold stores and hence commonly referred toas cargo during its entire logistic cycle.Cold chain logistics includes all of the means used to ensure a constant temperaturefor a product that is not heat stable, from the time it is manufactured until the time itis used. Moreover, cold chain is considered as a science, a technology and a process. Itis a process as a series of tasks must be performed to manufacture, store, transportand monitor temperature sensitive products.

HISTORY

It all started with efforts to eradicate smallpox in the1960s and 1970s provided the foundation for efforts toexpand immunisation programmes, including work todevelop immunisation supply chains. The need to createa reliable system to keep vaccines cold during the lengthyjourney from the manufacturer to the point of use, evenin remote areas, was a crucial concern.

This gave birth to many inventions in cold chain supply.
