WHAT IS A MUSIC MAGAZINE?

A music magazine is aimed at people who are interested in music and want to read about celeb gossip, reviews, features, interviews, posters, look at photoshoots and general music news. It is dedicated to anything to do with music and its culture. It mainly contains information about celebs in the music industry rather than just celebs in general. Depending on the genre of the magazine determines how many images are used on the front cover.

Pop Magazine Pop magazines usually contain up to or

more than 6 images on the front cover. They are generally aimed at a younger audience rather than older, containing prizes such as nail varnish or mini games etc. They are vibrant, colourful and full of gossip and the top trending fashions of the season. They usually also contain lots of enthusiastic images and portray a life that a young teen may want to live.

Indie Magazine Indie magazines are opposite to pop

magazines. The image on the front cover is generally a person who has an expression that connotes a fashionable, cool look. Colours are used in a more subtle way however bright colours may still be used, but only for certain sections of the cover instead of all over like a pop magazine may have. The magazine has an edgy look which promotes the whole idea of and indie style.

Dance Magazine Depending on the style of dance can prove that there are

many different design styles used for magazines involving dance. For a style like ballet and tap, there are usually plain backgrounds with one large image that is showing a person whilst they are dancing. It is plain and simple and creates a relaxed feel. For magazines that involve dance styles such as street dance and hip hop, the cover is usually more dramatic and colourful. And contains special effects to make the image stand out. In some cases like the ballet magazine, less can be more as the simplicity can create the same effect as the dramatic look of the street dance magazine.

Conclusion All of the different genres follow the

basic conventions of magazines containing a masthead, image and cover lines however depending on the audience effects the colours and amount of images used. The colours for a pop magazines and street dance magazines are brighter and more “in your face” and indie and dance magazines are more subtle yet still contain colour which is less dramatic.
