constitution

mid-14c., "law, regulation, edict," from O.Fr. constitucion (12c.) "constitution, establishment," and directly from L. constitutionem (nom.constitutio) "act of settling, settled condition, anything arranged or settled upon, regulation, order, ordinance," from constitut-, pp. stem of constituere (see constitute). Meaning "action of establishing" is from 1580s; that of "way in which a thing is constituted" is from c.1600; that of "physical health, strength and vigor of the body" is from 1550s; of the mind, "temperament, character" from 1580s. Sense of "mode of organization of a state" is from c.1600; that of "system of principles by which a community is governed" dates from 1730s; especially of a document of written laws since the U.S. and French constitutions, late 18c.

institution

c.1400, "action of establishing or founding (a system of government, a religious order, etc.)," from O.Fr. institucion "foundation; thing established," from L.institutionem (nom. institutio) "disposition, arrangement; instruction, education," noun of state from institutus (seeinstitute). Meaning "established law or practice" is from 1550s. Meaning "establishment or organization for the promotion of some charity" is from 1707.

Constitute (v.) mid-15c., verb use of adjective constitute, "made up, formed" (late 14c.), from L.constitutus "arranged, settled," pp. adj. From constituere "to cause to stand, set up, fix, place, establish, set in order; form something new; resolve," of persons, "to appoint to an office," from com-, intensive prefix (see com-), +statuere "to set" (see statue). Related: Constituted; constituting.

Constitute (n.) - ??????????

institute (v.) early 14c., "to establish in office, appoint," from L. institutus, pp. of instituere "to set up," from in-"in" (see in- (2)) +statuere "establish, to cause to stand" (see  statute). General sense of "set up, found, introduce" first attested late 15c. Related: Instituted; instituting.

institute (n.)1510s, "purpose, design," from institute (v.). From 1540s as "an established law." The sense of "organization, society" is from 1828, borrowed from French Institut national des Sciences et des Arts, established 1795 to replace the royal academies, from L. institutum, neut. pp. Of instituere.

Deleuze: “It definitely makes sense to look at the various ways individuals and groups constitute themselves as subjects through processes of subjectification: what counts in such processes is the extent to which, as they take shape, they elude both established forms of knowledge and the dominant forms of power. Even if they in turn engender new forms of power or become assimilated into new forms of knowledge. For a while, though, they have a real rebellious spontaneity. This is nothing to do with going back to “the subject” that is, to something invested with duties, power, and knowledge. One might equally well speak of new kinds of event, rather than processes of subjectification: events that can't be explained by the situations that give rise to them, or into which they lead. They appear for a moment, and it's that moment that matters, it's the chance we must seize. Or we can simply talk about the brain: the brain's precisely this boundary of a continuous two-way movement between an Inside and Outside, this membrane between them. New cerebral pathways, new ways of thinking, aren't explicable in terms of microsurgery; it's for science, rather, to try and discover what might have happened in the brain for one to start thinking this way or that. I think subjectification, events, and brains are more or less the same thing. What we most lack is a belief in the world, we've quite lost the world, It's been taken from us. If you believe in the world you precipitate events, however inconspicuous, that elude control, you engender new space-times, however small their surface or volume. It's what you call pietas. Our ability to resist control, or our submission to it, has to be assessed at the level of our every move. We need both creativity and a people.” Negri interviews Deleuze

ALL THIS IS INSPIRED BY ANTONIO NEGRI'S IDEA OF “THE CONSTITUTIVE

POWER OF THE MULTITUDE” - BUT NEED SOMETHING MORE CRAFT-ORIENTED THAN COMMUNE, POSSE, NOMAD, RHIZOME

-SOMETHING THAT TIES HABIT TO TECHNIQUE – HOW DO WE CAPTURE THIS COMMON VALUE WE'VE GENERATED? WHAT'S THE MEDIA, THE PROTOCOL WE SHOULD FOLLOW?

DELICIOUS IS ONE WAY TO TRACK OUR “CONSTITUTES”BUT WE POTENTIALLY CAN FORM SO MANY...DO WE NEED SOCIAL CONVENTION TO ORGANISE THE FLOWS?“OK THIS IS GOING WELL...I THINK WE NEED TO MAKE THIS A CONSTITUTE...AGREE A TAG, HEAD TOWARDS A MAXIM OR SLOGAN, COME BACK TO THIS IN AN AGREED SPACE OVER AN AGREED TIME”

prostitute (v.)

1520s, "to offer to indiscriminate sexual intercourse (usually in exchange for money)," from L. prostituere "to expose to prostitution, expose publicly," from pro- "before" (see pro-) + statuere "cause to stand, establish" (see stature). The noun sense of "harlot" is from 1610s, from L. prostituta "prostitute," fem. of prostitutus, pp. of prostituere. The notion of "sex for hire" is not inherent in the etymology, which rather suggests one "exposed to lust" or sex "indiscriminately offered."

ONE LAST WORD GAME...IF WE REDEFINE CONSTITUTECAN WE REDEFINE PROSTITUTE?

WHAT INSTALLS ITSELF “BEFORE” OUR PROCESS OF ESTABLISHING OUR SELVES, OUR STANDING, OUR POWER? WHAT RENDERS US POWERLESS, “INDISCRMINATELY ON OFFER”, BEFORE WE EVEN START TO CONSTITUTE OURSELVES? [ADVERTISING?]

HIGHLIGHTS OF Q&A:

- ALL THIS ALSO V.INSPIRED BY SENNETT'S THE CRAFTSMAN - WHAT IS THE “CRAFT” OF CONTEMPORARY CITIZENSHIP? IN AN INFORMATION-SATURATED ENVIRONMENT, ARE THERE SOCIAL RITUALS WE CAN USE TO HELP US TURN SEMIOSIS INTO POIESIS, MEANING INTO ACTION? IS A CONSTITUTE A 'SOFT GUILD'?

- THERE'S A FEAR THAT A CONSTITUTE COULD BECOMES MERELY A WAY TO MANAGE INFORMATION, THAN GENERATE CREATIVE BEHAVIOUR... …BUT WE SHOULD NOT MISTAKE EMPOWERING TECHNIQUE FOR MANAGEMENT SKILLS...
