What we do

Biocide trialsTo determine biocidal effect of products supplied by our clients

FFUBR trialsTo study effect of different treatment regimes on reservoir souring

Other projectsTo find solutions to specific problems relevant to our work, or our clients

Corrosion projectsTo determine efficacy of corrosion inhibitors on MIC (Microbial Influenced Corrosion)

Biocide Trials

Prepared by Yvonne Ferguson

Different types of biocideA large trial with eg 16 chemicals at 3 concentrations and 3 timepoints

• Minimum of 148 MPNs, including Time 0 and Control

• 296 boxes of SRB media, 296 boxes of GHB media

• 2368 needles. 24 boxes.

• People to help with inoculations. Takes approximately 10 minutes to inoculate 4 boxes of media.

• Space to set media boxes out on benches

Biocide Trials

PlanktonicBacteria are cultured from seawater, or water supplied by client, and subjected to biocide treatment. The most effective biocide is determined by MPN count by inoculating cell suspension into media.

Biocide Trials

SessileBacteria is grown as biofilm on a surface of known area ie sessile bacteria grown on biostuds. Biofilm grown on biostuds is subjected to biocide treatment. The most effective biocide is determined by MPN count.

Dynamic Flow CellBiofilm grown on biostuds, placed in a flow cell and biocide solution flowed through the cell to determine biocide efficiency.

FFUBR trials

FFUBRFixed Film Upflow Bio Reactor Aka ‘sandpacks’

Investigate effect of nutrient additions, nitrate or biocide treatment

Water is flowed continuously through a glass bead or sand packed column. Flow is measured daily to detect any problems which need remedied.

Effluent from the columns is analysed for sulphide, sulphate, iron, pH, nitrate, nitrite, DNA, FISH, MPN, VFA.

FFUBR trials

Page 10: What I do

FFUBR Trials

• Treating with nitrate to encourage growth of NRB (nitrate reducing bacteria) and inhibit growth of SRB

• Investigating whether pulse treating with nitrate is more effect than continuous treatment with nitrate. This would have cost benefits for the customer.

• Treating with biocide to inhibit bacterial growth

• Investigating if treatment with eg nitrate or biocide can assist with oil recovery from the reservoirs.

Examples

ValueA typical trial with one test column and one control column may cost £3000 per month and run for a minimum of 2 months though ideally should run for longer to gain decent results.

Due to the nature of the chemical cleaning there may be occasions where weight loss of blank is marginally higher than analysed coupon. In event of such cases the corrected weight loss will be reported as zero.

SRB-mediated corrosion of carbon steel

Prepared by Yvonne Ferguson

Page 15: What I do

Very low levels

• ie (µg/l) probably no effect, possible inhibition of CO2 corrosion

Low levels

• ie (mg/l) effect on corrosion, possible cracking

Higher levels

• ie (g/l) high risk of stress cracking

At some point the system might become ‘sour’
