Minerals
Definition: A naturally formed, inorganic solid with a crystalline structure.
4 questions to ask when identifying a mineral1. Is it a solid?2. Is it formed in nature?3. Is it a nonliving material?4. Does is have a crystalline structure?
Are They or Aren’t They?To be classified as a mineral, a substance must satisfy five requirements.
Properties of Minerals
Lets look further… into how the crystalline structure is formed!
Elements – a substance in its purest state, unable to be broken down further
Atoms-smallest part of the element and has all properties making the element.
Compound-substance made of two or more elements, chemically joined.
The compound containing sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) make up….
Crystals also make up minerals!
Crystals -solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms, present throughout the space of the mineral.
• Each mineral is made up of its own crystalline structure
Types of Minerals
Silicate minerals• Contain silicon and oxygen• Make up more than 90% of earths crust
Examples• Quartz Feldspar Biotite mica
Types of Minerals
Nonsilicate minerals• Does not contain combo of silicon and oxygen
6 Classifications Examples– Native elements copper– Carbonates calcite– Halides fluorite– Oxides corundum– Sulfates gypsum– Sulfides galena
What have you learned?
• Define in your own words what a mineral is
• What are minerals made up of?
