Healthy Fats What are healthy fats?

Dietary fat is an important macronutrient used by our bodies for energy, to absorb vitamins, and to protect our heart and

brain health. Since fat is an important part of a healthy diet, it is important to focus on eating more healthy fats and limiting

more harmful fats. Healthy fats are unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) and omega-3 fatty acids

found in foods such as oils, nuts, avocados, and fatty fish (tuna, salmon). Unhealthy fats include saturated fats and Trans

fats found in foods such as butter, whole-fat dairy products, ice cream, red meat, baked-goods and fast food.

The health benefits of healthy fats

Monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and omega-3 fats lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, lower bad LDL cholesterol

while increasing good HDL cholesterol, prevent abnormal heart rhythms, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and

help prevent the hardening and narrowing of the arteries.

Tips for adding more healthy fats to you diet

• Eat omega-3 fats every day (fatty fish, walnuts, ground flax seeds, and canola, flaxseed, and soybean oils)

• Limit intake of saturated fats (replace red meat with beans, nuts, poultry and fish; switch from whole-fat dairy to

low-fat versions)

• Cook with olive oil or canola oil; dress your own salad using dressings with olive, flaxseed or sesame oils

• Eat more avocadoes

• Reach for the nuts

• Snack on olives
