So many musicians are doing their ultimate best to get noticed by programmers. Their music is great, but sometimes they don't have the right pictures, bio's or youtubes so the marketer can promote their music to the audience and make proper press releases. I was at Codarts to talk to minor students about entrepreneurship and marketing.

Eenheid, chemie en hoogspanning. Het zijn deingrediënten die het Jazz Internationaal Rotter-dam voor de veertiende keer verbonden. Van eenopening met het onconventionele bandje De Be-ren Gieren en het imponerende Armeense won-derkind, pianist Tigran ging de aandacht directdoor naar Mark Schilders. De jonge drummer diezoveel mogelijk jazzkilometers in New Yorkmaakt, was de spil van het jaarlijkse festivalpro-ject. Met zijn ‘Pack’, een nieuw samensteldeband, maakte hij zijn componeerdebuut. Hetwerd elektrische jazz met onder meer de vaardi-ge gitarist Jesse van Ruller, maar wisselde nogalvan energie. Tam waren de breed uitgesponnensoundscape-achtige vormen –een nogal opmer-kelijke keuze voor een drummer die hierin wei-nig meer kan dan accentueren. Opwindend washet, wanneer het vuur door ritmiek werd opge-stookt, zoals in Vamp met interessante inkleurin-gen op gitaar en piano. Als leider mag Schilderszich met vurige solo’s en struikelende ritmes nogmeer doen gelden. In een overvloedig program-ma in twee zalen stonden ook drummers cen-traal bij de band Krupa en The Genes, die met eenzelfverzekerde braniehouding flink ronkten.Groei viel op bij saxofonist Ben van Gelder diezich door zijn Amerikaanse kwartet met trompet-tist Ambrose Akinmusire verschrikkelijk uitge-daagd zag. Daardoor nam ook hij beduidendmeer risico, zijn spel leek opgetild.

Gisteren deed de bas het meest van zich spre-ken. Het trio Phronesis van de Deense bassist Jas-per Høiby trok inventief en frismodern steedseen andere sfeer op, en was ondanks het middag-concert tijdstip ( „dit is te vroeg voor jazz”) aan-vallend. Beduidend grilliger was het bij publieks-trekker Avishai Cohen, een echte opperhaan opde bas. Aanvankelijk foeterend tegen diegene diehet waagde te flitsen met zijn camera, sloeg gaan-deweg venijn om in concentratie. Cohen draaideom zijn contrabashals in lange improvisaties metals golven uitrollende romantische melodieën,die vervolgens knap afgepeld werden. Mooi hoedan in één beweging ovationeel applaus davert.AmandaKuyper
