President’s MessageGreetings Fellow JTC Running Members:

Well, I’m on my way to Boston! Actually it’s not what you think. I’m speaking at a conference then going for a run later in the afternoon but hey, I can imagine….

I can tell fall is in the air when I see many of you training hard for upcoming marathons. My daughter and three of her friends are planning a ‘girl’s getaway’ in November and will be running the Outer Banks Marathon. On my Saturday morning bike ride I see Doug Tillett, Bobby Green, and other JTC Running members leading folks participating in the Galloway Group training runs in Riverside. As for me, I’ve taken to the bike a few days a week to give the weary knees and feet a break. I may take a stab at the Outback on Thanksgiving, or if I’m not ready, the Jacksonville Bank half in December.

All of this training going on has lit a fire in me though. I had the pleasure last month of surfing great waves during Hurricane Bill with my son Jeff and son-in-law Russell. It was just ‘us guys’ out in the water (the ladies were training for a marathon, remember). While sitting on our boards waiting for the next set, I suggested that we three needed to ‘man up’ and attempt a marathon next year to which they both agreed without hesitation. Unfortunately, Uncle Sam may require Russell’s services in the Persian Gulf by then which leaves it up to Jeff and me to honor the male side of the family by training for and running Chicago (I picked Chicago because it’s flat and it’s a great bar town). So it’s decided. We’ll take the plunge. I’ll rely on many of you for advice along the way.

Switching gears…Hat’s off to everyone that competed and volunteered in making the Summer Beach Run a

tremendous success. The high tides from Hurricane Bill put the race in jeopardy up until the night before, but Doug Alred made the correct call once again and the race turned out to be one of the largest in years. If anyone wants to know, the waves were great too!

Take a gander at our website for photos of the volunteers that cooked and served food at the Sulzbacher Center in July. We had a great time, even if I did make the spaghetti stick. Many thanks to Margaret Barton for organizing this rewarding event for the club and look for more opportunities to participate in similar events in the future.

Lastly, there have been many questions surrounding the changes in schedule at the Bolles track. As of this deadline, we expect no disruption to the Wednesday afternoon training sessions. Morning workouts are still a question mark however. As a reminder, these training sessions are open to JTC Running members only – if you know folks that are working out that are not members, encourage them to join. Our RRCA insurance only covers our members, so this is a requirement that we can not compromise. We’ll continue to post updates to the website as warranted.

As always, be safe and see you on the road.

2 September/October 2009 THE STARTING LINE 3

The Minutes

President David Hall called the meeting to order at 7:14 p.m. Directors Doug Alred, Jane Alred, Richard Fannin, Michael Fitzsimmons, Sean McCormack, and Jim Van Cleave were absent. Director David Frank consulted with us for part of the meeting by cell phone. Rex Reed, Membership Coordinator, was present when the meeting started.

Approval of 5/5/09 minutes: A motion by Bobby Green to approve the minutes, seconded by Mark Ryan, passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Bonnie Brooks noted that our CD’s and investments had gained value since the last report. The board was notified that we have received an extension for filing our federal tax forms until August 15. Lastly, the State of Florida sent our Tax Certificate of Exemption, which we received on June 2. Everyone appreciated Lamar Strother’s persistence in obtaining this form.

OLD BUSINESS:

• Companion Statue for The River Runner – Lamar Strother made a motion that the JTC Running Board of Directors authorize him to talk to the officials in the City to see if the way be clear for JTC Running to donate a female statue to the city. It was seconded by Douglas Tillett. After considerable discussion, which ended up focusing on the intent of the motion only to authorize Lamar to investigate the possibility of adding a second statue on the Northbank Riverwalk, the motion passed – 10 aye, 1 nay.

• RRCA Membership – in the May minutes it was noted that our membership with RRCA had accidentally not been renewed. Doug Tillett informed the board that we corrected the situation and successfully renewed our membership during May.

• 1st Place Sports Contract for Race Management – discussion of this old business was moved to the end of the meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:

• Fund Raiser 5K at Englewood – Doug Tillett made a motion, seconded by Bobby Green, that we support the FROG 5K Fundraiser at Englewood High School by paying up to $400 for their race tee shirts. Following lots of discussion, the motion passed – 7 votes aye to 6 votes nay.

• Summer Camp Grants – Doug Tillett presented a motion at the request of Doug Alred, which was seconded by Lamar Strother, that we increase our budget for Running Camp Grants from $2,500 to $5,000 because of the large number of requests we had received. Part of the lengthy discussion that followed included Larry Sassa’s suggestion that we ask the grant recipients to do something for us – perhaps work at a race or write an article for The Starting Line. No requirements were added to the motion for this, but Margaret Barton volunteered to help notify the camp runners of our request. The motion for the funding increase was approved by a vote of 12 to zero.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

RACE COMMITTEE – had no report due to Doug Alred’s absence.

Gate River Run, RITA CASH, and Summer Beach Run - had no report due to Doug Alred’s absence.

Track Series – Meet on May 29- Lamar Strother described a disagreement that occurred at the meet regarding the PAL team, who registered for a relay after our official cut-off time because

Hall of Fame InducteesJANE AND DOUG ALRED INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAMEBy Bob Fernee

Doug and Jane Alred, owners of 1st Place Sports, are to be inducted into The Running Specialty Hall of Fame on November 10 in Austin, Texas.

The distinction is awarded each year by the IRRA, Independent Running Retailers Association. The awards presentation will take place during the IRRA’s annual convention due to take place in Austin.

The Alred’s have been singled out, not only for their excellence in retailing, but also for their contribution in the field of road race management.

Doug Alred opened 1st Place Sports in Jacksonville in 1978 during what is known as the Running Boom. It has grown from one small store specializing in running to a flourishing business of four stores in Orange Park, Mandarin, San Marco, and Jacksonville Beach.

The store organizes more than 40 races a year, including the Gate River Run, the Jacksonville Bank Marathon, the Outback Marathon and the Summer and Winter Beach Runs.

A group of JTC Running members prepared and served spaghetti with meat sauce to approximately 400 residents and drop-ins of the Sulzbacher Center, the homeless shelter in downtown Jacksonville.

A big and sincere thank you to all who volunteered (Blaine Adams, Jane & Doug Alred, Amy Costa and family, Elaine Davis, Marlon Gaspin, Stephanie & Chuck Griffith, Susan Haag, Shae Haag, David & Pam Hall, Kellie Howard, Gary Ledman, Miller McCormick, Kathy Murray, Terry Sikes, and Robert Welch), including those who agreed to defer until our next outing due to space limitations in the kitchen. I especially want to thank Miller McCormick, a frequent volunteer at the Sulzbacher Center, who helped to coordinate this effort.

The Sulzbacher Center relies on the support of local community groups, and all who participated agreed that this is a great way for JTC Running to give back. JTC Running members also donated a sizeable number of running shoes which the Center very much appreciated. We are looking into plans to serve dinner again in the late winter/early spring and will put out a call for more volunteers at that time. Thanks again to all volunteers for making the outing on August 14 such a success!

See the inside cover of this newsletter for photos of JTC Running members at the Sulzbacher Center.

JTC Running Scholarships

A dozen students from seven local area high schools were awarded JTC Running scholarships to attend running camps over the summer. The majority of the students attended Brevard Distance Runners Camp in Brevard, North Carolina. All of the students reported very positive experiences that have allowed them to set new goals for their upcoming cross country seasons.

Students found the coaches, counselors, and trainers inspiring and informative. The mountains of North Carolina also provided a valuable training experience for runners accustomed to flat terrain. Cedar Rock, Hooker Falls, Turkey Knob, Graduation Hill, and the feared and respected Art Loeb run all offered tests of endurance and proved memorable to students. Students also mentioned the benefits of being able to soak their legs in the cool creeks following the grueling hills!

In addition to a rigorous running schedule, the camp offered other group and team-building activities such as dodge ball tournaments, talent shows, ice cream socials, dances, and a shaving cream extravaganza. Students also reported that

the cooks and meals were

excellent. They would recommend the camp experience to any high school runner.

The students are grateful to JTC Running and their coaches for the making the experience possible. Below are excerpts from some of the testimonials we received.

“There was a wall in my running game, and Brevard Distance Running Camp was the wrecking ball that cleared it.” – Seth

“To say the least my experience was an amazing one…I grew closer to my team, my coaches, and learned more about myself…It has helped me to realize to be a champion you must not quit or most of all make excuses to give up or miss a workout.” – Hayden

“The coaches were amazing and taught very well on topics such as racing/course strategy and running form…The mountains are truly a great place to run [as] they offer both views and difficulty that you cannot find anywhere in Florida.” – Walker

“Not only was this one of the best weeks of my life, I feel that I have grown so much as a runner in that week I was there. The three of us that went to Brevard are sharing what we learned with the team, and we are ready to lead [our school] to new heights this season.” – David

“This week was about my favorite week of the whole summer. I ended up running the most mileage I had ever run before, and I feel confident that I am a much stronger runner now. I can’t wait for Brevard next year and look forward to this year’s cross country season!” – Patrick

“Attending Brevard Distance Runner’s Camp

in North Carolina was an experience I’ll never forget…The trails up the Blue Ridge Mountains were very difficult at times but were a terrific workout physically and mentally.” – Katherine

“It was exciting to look at all the new trails and be able to see how this running camp was able to affect my running…this running camp was able to get the best out of me.” – Moira

“I had the greatest time there meeting new people and getting to know more about running. I will never be able to forget that week…I cannot express how much it meant for me to go to camp.” – Monica

Dan the Man This past month the Jacksonville area lost Dan Brown, a track and field coaching

luminary. Dan started working the local running scene and coaching at Bishop Kenny in the ‘70’s. He was most recently the coach at Bishop Snyder.

Coach Brown is the trunk of a coaching tree the includes his brother Mike, his sons, Steve Lyons, Brian Devine, Tony Ryan, Tracey Kuhn, Mary Terry, Tim Yocum, David and Eric Frank, Kevin Curran, John Curran, and Rob VanCleve to name a few. The success of each of these coaches (must be dozens of state champions) are all a direct result of the program that was fostered by Coach Brown at Bishop Kenny.

Coach Brown left his mark emphasizing the “field” in track and field as a prodigious promoter of the throws and jumps. His desire to teach the life skills with the intent to turn all his young athletes into responsible, caring and respectful adults transcended all his coaching protégés. Coach Brown will best be remembered as a teacher of the spirituality and philosophy of life, running and discovery of the human spirit.

Steve Lyons provides his tribute to Dan on the following page. Steve followed Coach Brown at Bishop Kenny as the head cross country and track coach from 1985-1995. He continued in the same position at Nease HS from 1995-2002. Coach Lyons coached four state championship cross country teams: 1991, ’92, ’93 and ’96; the final one for the Panthers. He also coached the Crusaders to two track state championships in 1991 and 1993. However, like his predecessor, his greatest achievements were instilling the lessons of life and fostering young convictions of the heart.

THE STARTING LINE 19

I had 13 kids in an eight passenger van and I was following Dan Brown’s truck, which had about a cord’s worth of kids stacked up like hickory in the back. We had left Jacksonville around 2 a.m. after the district championship track meet in the spring of 1984. This, I learned later, was in part a trip to recruit me to take his place as track and cross country coach at Bishop Kenny, but he had not yet revealed his intentions to leave, so I was in the dark in more ways than one. I should have figured it out from the five-star treatment he would give me that weekend.

After a nine-hour drive through the night, we stumbled out into a hailstorm at a roadside parking area/rest stop. Rest? Stop? Dan? 15 minutes later, with full packs on, we were on our way up the North Carolina foothills towards an idyllic mountaintop destination a mere 10 hours away. 10 hours, that is, for those other 21 on board who were running 50 miles a week. Dan and I got there a bit after 1 a.m., nearly 48 hours since we had last slept. A half can of cold beans and several rugby songs later, we drifted off into blissful slumber for all of four hours before Dan woke everyone up to see the sun rise. After a quick and cold breakfast and a forced downhill march, we got back in the vehicles and drove back to Jacksonville. I remember all this as if it were yesterday, even if it didn’t happen exactly as I have recounted (but not one of you doubts that Dan was capable of such a plan, do you?)

I could go on, you know. Once he convinced me that sleeping in a tightly strung, mosquito net-enclosed army hammock would put me one step closer to heaven. I guess it did, actually, until I tried to turn over around 3 a.m., it flipped, and I was stuck upside down with my face mashed into the webbing and neither hand able to reach the zipper behind my back. Some gyrations later, I could move the zipper an inch or two at a time, slowly spilling out as the torture device opened, and eventually landed with a thud, one step further away from heaven. Now tell me that there’s a one of you reading this that hasn’t had

Dan talk you into something that left you trapped and upside down.

Dan never left coaching, no matter what his official job was. He coached in Washington for several years, returning to do a volunteer stint at Kenny in the mid 90’s, and then got into the mix at Bishop Snyder. Even when his hand wasn’t directly in it, though, he was only as far away as the nearest closet. A low, whispered “How’s the gang doing?” greeted me late one night in 1985 when I picked up the phone at home in Jacksonville. “I had to call from the closet because Jeanne said I’m over my minutes allowance for the month.” After filling him in on the latest, we were interrupted by a decidedly irritated voice in the background. “Danny, Danny, is that you in the closet?!!! YOU’RE TALKING TO STEVE LYONS AGAIN AREN’T YOU?!!!”

I always thought Dan could have won a few state championships if he could have down-shifted himself from type A to type B for about a month before championship season. I know that team in 1984 was wrecked from their camping trip and had a terrible regional meet. But the Dan we all knew didn’t come equipped with low gears, and the clutch was burned out anyway. In some kind of twisted symbolism, many of the trophies his teams did win ended up in a dumpster in 1995. Even had they been preserved in amber, though, they could never have outlasted or outshined his true trophies – the wondrous lights he kindled in the hearts and souls of so many campfire companions.

I’ll wager there’s a closet somewhere in heaven, and ol’ Dan will sneak in there more than once. And he’ll never stop calling if we listen.

- Steve Lyons

Dan the Man Continued Meet...Danny WeaverDanny Weaver, 62 and proud of it, is retired from Prudential/IBM and has been a member of JTC Running for “around 25 years”.

» How long have you been running and what got you into the sport?

I have been running 26 years. I wanted to lose some weight and Jeff Nelson got me started at lunchtime at Prudential, and on Sunday mornings with the Florida Striders in Orange Park.

» What is your favorite or most memorable race? And do you have any PRs you’d care to mention?

Some favorite running memories: The spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge at the beginning of the New York City marathon. The goofy costumes, including the guy dressed as a taxi cab, in the London marathon.

Needing four hours to qualify for Boston and coming in at 3:59:38 in the Las Vegas Marathon. Note – I never did get any faster to qualify, I just got older. Seeing the finish line in last year’s Boston marathon.

» Do you have any running heroes or is there anyone that is particularly inspiring for you?

Bob Carr has inspired me for many, many years at the Bolles speed work sessions. When I first started running with Bob at Bolles, it was my goal to keep up with him running the warm-up, doing the speed work, and the cool down run. It took me about a year to finally do it.

» Who do you like to train with and where can we find you on your typical run?

I am very lucky to have many running buddies, too numerous to mention: at the downtown bridges on Mondays, at Bolles on Wednesdays, at Forest Circle on Friday mornings and in the Southside

area on Sunday mornings. I also enjoy running with the San Marco group occasionally on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings.

» What is your typical weekly training schedule?

Monday p.m.- 6 miles/3 bridges loops; Wednesday p.m.- Speed work at Bolles; Friday a.m. – 6.5 from Forest Circle; Sunday a.m.- 10+ on the Southside with Stephanie Griffith’s group

» What are you training for now? The Kiawah Island, South Carolina,

marathon on December 12, 2009

» What is the best running advice you’ve ever received?

You are going to have good days and bad days running. The most important thing is to just hang in there - the more you run, the easier it’s gonna get. But, if you are feeling an injury coming on, back off, don’t kill yourself, and live to run another day.

» If you had to give a speech to a bunch of runners what would likely want to say?

It’s not how fast or how far you run that matters. It’s what running does for you.

Nike TechnologyNIKE LUNAR, OR BEAM ME UP BOWERMANBy Bob Fernee

Nike is a running shoe company that has crashed through many barriers and set many standards within the industry. Who could forget Bill Bowerman inventing the famous waffle sole in his basement? Bowerman used his wife’s waffle iron to form a rubber outer sole that put running shoe technology on its head. It destroyed the waffle iron and made millions. He never said what his wife had to say about it-ouch!

There was Steve Prefontaine, an early Nike guinea pig; Nike formed its first successful shoe, the Waffle Trainer, around Pre’s foot, creating its ‘last’, or shape. The light, springy trainer set a standard that other companies found as hard to catch as Prefontaine himself. It sold like hotcakes.

Then Nike went one better, it invented air sole technology.

How well I remember when I was introduced to the first Nike running shoe with the air sole, the Tailwind.

I thought it was a gimmick, it would never take off and besides, it was extremely expensive. Gads, I think it was about 50 bucks!

I was an idiot, I didn’t buy stock in it, and Nike

Nike is set to quite possibly turn the running world on its head once again.

The new technology is Lunar. If it sounds rather space-aged, it is. The new lunar midsole foam was developed with NASA to pad the seats in the space shuttle. It is responsive, shock-absorbent, and very light.

Nike’s first lunar shoes, the Lunar Trainer and Lunar Racer have been on the market for a year or so now. The new model, the Lunar Glide is a shoe that is, according to Nike, useable by over-pronators and neutral runners alike.

The Lunar Glide features Nike’s new Dynamic Support technology which is comprised of two distinct midsoles. The bottom layer is made of eva and has a slight varus wedge, meaning that it is raised up on the medial or arch side of the foot. The top layer is composed of Lunar Lite materials

made even more millions. Afterwards, they made even more air-soled shoes and they completely dominated the running shoe game.

Other running shoe companies though obviously were not as stupid as me and came to the conclusion that they needed technology too. Asics came up with ‘gel’, Saucony with ‘grid’, Brooks with ‘hydroflo’, Converse invented ‘wave technology’ and the late, lamented Osaga created the ‘cantilever midsole’.Were they great ideas or did they just say to themselves, “If we don’t have some sort of technology people won’t feel they have a reason to buy us”? Invention or marketing; who knows?

In any case, Nike broke the mold and set the standard. During the 1970s and ’80s Nike destroyed the competition and had the lion’s share of the market thanks to shoes such as the Pegasus, the Air Max and the Tailwind, not to forget their fast-selling racing flats the Mariah and the Eagle.

Then Nike took a page from the podiatrists’ manual and created shoes for different types of feet and gait cycles-something that most runners knew nothing about. Three shoes, known as the Triax Series, for three different applications: The over-pronator, the neutral runner and the supinator: Everyday stuff these days but earth moving science back then.

Nike: The pioneer, Nike, the innovator. And now

and has an opposing valgus wedge. The effect is that the shoe can help correct the foot’s gait regardless if it over-pronates or supinates. Cushion for the neutral runner, stability for the over-pronator.

One thing is for sure, the Lunar Glide has the springiest midsole that I have ever experienced. It feels like the shoe wants to do your running for you.

Another new lunar shoe, the Lunar Elite, will be released early in 2010. It will replace the Lunar Trainer and should be a real crowd pleaser among biomechanically efficient runners.

Nike seems to be saying, “For the best in modern running shoe technology don’t look back, look up, look at the moon.” Think lunar. Nike lunar technology; the next big thing.

Coaches Corner

As a long time high school coach (some people say that I coached Ponce de Leon and Pedro Menendez), I have used that expression ad infinitum. It is usually in reference to a youngster who wants to run too many miles, or one who goes out too fast in a race in an attempt to beat a superior opponent. In recent years, though, the expression seems to fit more and more parents who want the best for their young athlete, but in reality end up creating a negative situation.

I’m specifically referring to parents hiring an outside coach for their young runner because they think that the coach at their child’s school is not pushing their child hard enough, or simply that their child is not progressing to the parent’s satisfaction under the school coach’s tutelage. This seems to be prevalent in schools that have an affluent student body. Some parents believe that if you are not paying a significant amount of money for instruction that it cannot have any real value. Some also fall prey to a résumé that would have them believe that the hired coach is superior to the school coach. Granted, there are many schools in the area where coaches were selected by default (“Is there anyone in here who runs? O.K., you have the job!”). At best these people are nice, and harmlessly inept, at worst they are damaging and dangerous. However, there are some coaches in the area who are superior in knowledge, pedagogy, work ethic, and most importantly, CARING, about the well-being of their charges. These coaches are EASILY IDENTIFIABLE in the community.

When parents bring in a “supplemental” coach, at best it creates confusion, and at worst, a disaster. Visualize two doctors, independent of each other, treating and prescribing for a patient. Visualize two pharmacists, independent of each other, filling prescriptions for a patient. Visualize two engineers, independent of each other, working on the same bridge. It cannot work, to say nothing of being an insult to the team coach, and potential disruption to team (and TEAM is the most important!) morale.

Middle and high school runners need to be “eased” into their running careers. They need to be taught proper habits (warm-up and cool-down, etc.), they need to be taught a proper appreciation of the history of the sport, they need to learn the basics of the principles of training, and most importantly, they need to be trained by ONE person. To reiterate: the competent (superior?) coaches in the area are EASILY IDENTIFIABLE!

Oftentimes, the “supplemental” coaches can indeed create a leap in performance. Anyone can throw a bunch of intervals at an athlete, and show a quick spike in performance. Usually this is akin to glugging one of those caffeine-laced energy drinks available today, with the resultant “spike”, and subsequent “crash”.

The (competent) school coach has a long term plan. There is no “quick fix”, or immediate gratification in the sport of running. The (competent) school coach is cognizant of all the peripheral influences on an adolescent athlete, i.e., the female triad, academic load, high school “romances”, anticipation of the upcoming homecoming festivities, team rivalries/jealousies, etc., and is able to factor these environmental influences into the plan. The “supplemental” coach is not usually privy to all of the influences on the adolescent mind and emotions (hormones?).

Parents, of course, are the ultimate “deciders” of what is best for their child, and any school coach would have to defer to the wishes of the parent. However, it would probably (and should probably) preclude that child’s participation on the school team. The competent (and caring) coach would know full well the disaster potential of “too many cooks stirring the broth”, and would not want to endanger the child. The “supplemental” coach SHOULD know of all the potential negatives, and if legitimate, should decline to be the extra “cook”. The fact that they do not, indicates an agenda NOT in the best interests of all concerned. They won’t starve,

as there are plenty of adult runners for them to ply their trade on that are not members of any school team. Then again, these “supplemental” coaches, if pure in their stated intentions of helping young people, could easily obtain an adjunct position at many of the high schools in the area. After their BACKGROUND CHECKS, DRUG TESTS, CPR TRAINING, AND PAYING OF THE NUMEROUS FEES, many schools would be ecstatic to have them. They then could proceed to recruit (within the school, of course) athletes, create training plans for a multitude of youngsters with widely varying abilities, process the physicals and parent permission forms, check academic eligibility, find an appropriate course to stage

a meet on, recruit dozens of volunteers to help at the meets they host, create a schedule, raise money, issue and collect uniforms, design team T-shirts, beg for time in the weight room, arrange for transportation and hotel rooms for overnight trips, and, of course, collect those princely sums doled out by their athletic departments for their efforts (25, maybe 50 cents per hour?). But then again, we know that these “supplemental” coaches are just in it for the kids, just like the school coaches.

The road to hell can be paved with good intentions!

Your Regular Shott Of JOTHE HEART OF RUNNING By Jo Shott

“Your RegularShott of

Jo”

We can go back as far as the ancient Greeks to say thanks for an original acknowledgment and appreciation of the heart. They named this extraordinary muscle “Kardia.” Our words cardiac, cardiovascular, electrocardiogram (also known as ECG or EKG) and cardiologist all came from that word. The Greek philosopher Aristotle thought that the heart was “the seat of the soul and the center of man.” You can read into that deep thought as much as you want. But I would bet you the Greek runners that originated the Olympics or that man, God rest his soul, whom ran the first marathon and fell over dead could’ve told us a lot more about the heart, its various rates, and the direct result of overexertion.

Most recently, I was going about my business in the daily mundane of running and life when we had our local Polar HR rep come in for a lecture on heart rate training. A little skeptical as most of us runners are, I listened to the premise of proper heart rate training. He asked us, “Do you feel like you are breathing too hard on easy runs or recovery days?” Yes. “Are you getting into workouts and feeling too fatigued to finish? “ Yes. “Do you go out too hard in races or workouts, only to die towards the end?” OK… I’m sold. So, that day I took a personal four-week challenge

and have been training with the Polar RS800 ever since. Right off the bat I learned something; I never let my body recover. Hmmm… sound familiar? Well, if you trained with a heart rate monitor, you too might learn a little more about your body.

Our typical running week involves a long run on the weekend, some track work and/or hills during the week and possibly a tempo run. The days between those workouts are the “junk miles” as some call them. They have a purpose. Recovery! And in return for you letting your body rest, you will get more out of your workouts and feel better…imagine that! Furthermore, if weight loss is a target for you, then heart rate monitoring is a must. Let me break this down as brief but as detailed as I can in this “Shott of an article.”

Step one starts with the trickiest but most important part of heart rate training and that is, finding YOUR specific maximum heart rate. I found 10 different theories on how to find the Max HR for a person. One very generic estimation calls for subtracting your age from 220. For example, a 30-year-old’s max HR would be approximately 190 beats per minute (220-30), and a target range of 70 to 80% would correspond to 133 to 152 beats

22 September/October 2009 THE STARTING LINE 23

Page 14: WHAT A GREAT SUMMER BEACH RUN! - JTC Runningjtcrunning.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/sep_oct09.pdf · 2013-09-01 · had the pleasure last month of surfing great waves during Hurricane

per minute. This is insinuating that all people my age have the exact same resting HR and therefore Max HR? Not so. One of the other tests I found looked more like an algebraic formula I used to get hives over in college.

My personal thoughts are to take the tried and true “run hard” test. Warm up and then run as fast as you can at an even pace for three minutes. Recover with two or three minutes' gentle running, then repeat your three-minute fast run. During your second run, you should get a higher maximum heart rate. Use a heart rate monitor, or get a helper to take readings throughout the session for complete accuracy, as your heart rate

Final note: while maximum heart rate is relatively stable, heart rate under a given set of conditions is highly variable. Hydration, weather (hot= higher HR/ cold= lower HR), posture, nutrition, fatigue, stress, excitement, and body temperature can all affect heart rate. Therefore, pace and heart rate complement each other well. Comparing your external and internal performance gives you the whole picture. Through what we’ve discussed here, you can track how your fitness changes over time. Run at the same pace and watch

may peak before the end. To measure your heart rate quickly, hold two fingers (not your thumb) over your pulse (neck or wrist) for six seconds and multiply the number of beats by ten. Some heart rate monitors actually have a “fitness test” feature that will take a resting heart rate test every morning for you and reset your daily percentages. Yes, sounds like cheating but that is what I use on my watch and it seems pretty accurate also. Step two, once you know your max HR the next step is to apply this to your weekly running routine. I am going to attempt to explain the different kinds of workouts, the Heart Rate Zone by % of your max, and the purpose of this kind of workout. Maybe it’s best understood in a graph:

your heart rate drop or hold your heart rate at the same level and see how much faster you’re running than last month. You can begin to under-stand your body and not over train/get injured. Best of luck and let me know how it works for you!

See you on the roads,

Benefits: Improves general base, recovery, boosts metabolism and builds your cardio engine Feels Like: Comfortable and easy, low muscle/cardio load Recommended for: Long runs and for general weight loss. Most of your mileage should come from this zone

Zone 3: Lactate Threshold (Tempo Run)

20 -40 minute Tempo Run 80 -94%

Benefits: Raises lactate threshold, elevates intensity of running at which you begin feeling discomfort= allowing you to run harder for longer Feels Like: Comfortably hard Recommended for: train in thiszone in the latter portion of the base phase and early competitive phaseof training

Zone 4: Intervals: (Long Intervals= VO2 Max & Short Intervals = Anaerobicworkout)

Long Interval: 3-5 minuteswith short rest periods

Short Interval: 30-90 secondswith long rest periods

95-100% 100%

Benefits: Improves VO2 max, heart’s stroke volume and cardiac output= heart more efficient to allow you to tolerate and buffer lots of lactic acid Feels Like: Muscle fatigue, heavy breathing Recommended for: goal for this training is to provide the least stressful stimulus that will elicit desired adaptation (stay in your zone!) This is done during competitive phase of your training

Zone 5: Fast Twitch Sprints or Pick-ups

Very Short Intervals: 5-15 seconds at close to top speed with long rest

100%+

Benefits: Increases muscle power, improves speed by recruiting fast-twitch muscle fibers, teaches your body to use sugar stores in anaerobic ways Feels Like: Breathing very hard Recommended for:Final preparation for short events, i.e. track or 5k events.
