Fast fact about Saturdays game against Phelps...

September 9th, 2011

Fairview Varsity cheerleaders fought to overcome injury Friday night to cheer the football team to a huge victory over the Fleming County Panthers. After a long, hot bus trip, the cheerleaders pulled it together and lead the crowd in cheering the Eagles on to victory.

The cheerleading team suffered a huge loss when it was feared that junior,Laiken Hobbs had a serious knee injury that would put her out for the rest of football season. Thanks to a lot of prayer by the squad and great doctors, Laiken only had to set out for the Fleming County game. Her knee is much better and she should be back on the field for Saturday’s home opener against Phelps.

The situation was a bit scary Friday when freshmen Kelsey Cochran and Tori Hamrick both suffered minor sprained ankles and Freshman Faryn Miller had a slight wrist injury. “These girls are some of our key stunt group people and to lose that many would be difficult, although not impossible, to overcome,’’ stated Alysa Miller, head coach.

The cheerleaders will be back in action Saturday morning as they host their final car wash of the year starting at 10:00 at the Tim Horton’s on 13th Street. It will be a busy day as the girls return to the field Saturday afternoon to cheer on their Eagles. “We appreciate the support we get at these fundraisers,” said Miller. “People would not believe how much money it has taken to build a team of this size and quality. We need all of the Eagle fans to come out Saturday morning and support us.”

Fairview (3-0) looks to tally up another win Saturday when they host Phelps.

The game was moved to Saturday September 10th because that is when the newly renovated Fairview Football Field in Westwood will be readily available for. Fairview Girls Cross Country team competed in the 2011 Geico Classic on September 3 at Cabell Midland High School, Ona, WV. This is the largest XC meet in West Virginia, with 1500 runners, and 8 different races that included 168 teams from Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The sweltering heat index of over 100 degrees, brought Emergency crews rushing to Cabell Midland High School Saturday afternoon to treat nearly a dozen cases of heat exhaustion. Cabell County 911 reports that at least 10 students were taken to the hospital for IV fluids after showing symptoms. Fairview Girls Team, a KY Class A team, won the AA-A girls race with 83 points. The West Virginia top team, Philip Barbour, and the one favored to win it all came in 2nd with 103 points. Fairview had 4 runners in the top 15, two of them in the top 10.

The team and Coach Becca Stacey-Chaney, believe that daily workouts in the heat, strength training and staying hydrated were the keys to their success on Saturday. Coach Chaney and Coach Bob Stacey were prepared to treat the team’s heat related problems, by bringing the team’s own ice tub in the back of the Fairview pick-up truck. The girls went from the finish line straight to the parking lot to submerge in the cool water and reduce their body temperature. Fairview will host the Fairview Invitational XC Meet on Saturday, September 10 beginning with the Varsity girls’ race at 9:30 am. At this time there are 15 teams competing in the varsity, middle school and elementary events. The community is invited and encouraged to come see these athletes in action.
