ST. ANN’S PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: This

has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 29th after the

7:00pm Mass.

SAINTLY SPOTLIGHT—ST. MATTHEW: Little is known about St. Matthew, except that he was the son of Alpheus, and he was likely born in Gal-ilee. He worked as a tax collector, which was a hated profession during the time of Christ. According to the Gospel, Matthew was working at a collection booth in Capernaum when Christ came to him and asked, "Follow me." With this simple call, Matthew became a disciple of Christ. From Matthew we know of the many doings of Christ and the message Christ spread of salvation for all people who come to God through Him. The Gospel account of Matthew tells the same story as that

found in the other three Gospels, so scholars are certain of its authenticity. His book is the first of the four Gospels in the New Testament.

Many years following the death of Christ, around 41 and 50 AD, Matthew wrote his gospel account. He wrote the book in Aramaic in the hope that his account would convince his fellow people that Jesus was the Messiah and that His kingdom had been fulfilled in a spiritual way. It was an important message at a time when almost everyone was expecting the return of a militant messiah brandishing a sword.

It is thought he departed for other lands to escape persecution sometime after 42 AD. According to various legends he fled to Parthia and Persia, or Ethiopia. Nothing is recorded of Matthew's passing. We do not know how he died, if his death was natural or if he was martyred.

Saint Matthew is often depicted as one of the four living creatures of Revelation 4:7, which reads, "The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a bull, the third living creature had a human face, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle."

Matthew was a tax collector and is therefore the patron saint of bankers. The Church established St. Mat-thew's feast day as September 21.

St. Matthew Prayer: O Glorious St. Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messi-ah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Lawgiver who founded a Church of the New Cove-nant. Obtain for us the grace to see Jesus living in his Church and to follow his teachings in our lives on earth so that we may live forever with him in heaven

O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of abortion and threaten the sanctity of family life. Grant our country the wisdom to proclaim that God’s law is the foundation on which this nation was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the culture of death and the strength to build a new Culture of Life.

All Kansas Diocese have been asked by our State's Bishops, including Bishop Brungardt, to join the Kansas Rosary Crusade. Each Thursday, we are asked to pray the Rosary for the passage of pro-life legislation here in Kansas. Thursday is the day when we normally pray the Luminous Mysteries, however the Kansas Rosary Crusade offers the "Mysteries of Life in the Womb" for your Thursday Rosary. You can log on to: https://kansasrosarycrusade.org/ to get all of the information.

It was decided to move our Sunday Rosary Devotion (via Zoom Meeting) to Thursday's at 8pm in order to participate in this crusade. As usual, you will receive a Zoom Meeting invitation sometime on Thursday and participants can click on the meeting link to join at 8:00 pm. If you have any questions or problems signing on, please don't hesitate to contact Tom or Lisa Ridder at 620-874-0447 or 620-874-8599.

Everyone is encouraged to register your individual name or family name and commit to this devotion even if you can't join on

Thursdays via Zoom Meeting.

PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY: O God, our creator, from Your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty

& the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as Your people & given us the right & the duty to worship You, the only true God, and Your

Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power & working of Your Holy Spirit, You call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the

light & the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask You to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give

us the strength of mind & heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on be-

half of the rights of Your Church & the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united

voice to all your sons & daughters gathered in Your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial with-

stood & every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren & all who come after us—this great land will always be “one

nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen!
