F or the past couple of years, Midtown has been hosting a really great weekly pop-up chef event. We’re excited to announce that, this July, Pop-Up Chef will be moving to WSPD for the remainder of its 2013 season. Beginning July 10 th , every Wednesday, a great local chef will “pop up” at our 14 th Street entrance from 11am to 2pm to serve a fresh, delicious local lunch. The event happens rain or shine, and it’s a great way to sample food from a different local chef each week. SaltworksA new pop-up gallery is coming to WSPD this summer with a stunning exhibition, Four Atlantans, on display through August 3rd.

Saltworks Gallery celebrates Atlanta’s multicultural heritage with a new exhibit, Four Atlantans,

featuring works by Atlanta residents with roots in Cuba, Chicago, West Virginia and South Korea.

Four Atlantans will feature work by painter/sculptor Alejandro Aguilera, designer/sculptor Brian Dettmer, painter Craig Drennen and collage artist, “cartographer of culture,” Jhia Moon. The exhibit opens June 29th and runs through August 3rd.

Saltworks Gallery has deep connections to the West Midtown neighborhood and specializes in building art collections with the work of innovative and compelling contemporary artists. Public viewing hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm. For more information, visit saltworksgallery.com.

Preserving PlaceWSPD foodies are going to love Martha McMillin’s new shop and interactive teaching kitchen, Preserving Place, opening this August.

To anyone who’s ever gone to the farmer’s market with big dreams of elaborate, locally-sourced dishes, only

to find herself with more veggies, fruits and herbs than intended, we say, “Rejoice.” This August, Preserving Place, a new shop and interactive teaching kitchen, is opening with one mission: to be an inviting spot where people can gather and learn about preserving techniques.

Says founder Martha McMillin, “I chose WSPD for my new retail adventure because it looked like home. My family had agrarian farm operations, so the industrial aesthetic and livestock history of WSPD feels familiar.” McMillin’s expansive new teaching kitchen will offer public classes in making baby food, cheese, jam, fermented foods, pickles and relish. Look for Preserving Place to open on the plaza under Abattoir at 1170 Howell Mill Road this August.

When we called up Ormsby’s chef and four-time Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival participant

Andrew Smith and asked him if he’d like to trash talk this year’s festival newbies, he demurred. “The Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival is all about community,” he said, “I love getting together with my fellow chefs.” Newcomer Delia Champion, owner of Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand concurs, saying “I’m thrilled to participate, and thrilled to partner with Farmer Neil; we’ve worked together since the early 90s! You can bet I’ll be bringing my A-Game!”

Festival promoter and PR guru Melissa Libby is equally enthusiastic. She says, “AKTF is one of my favorite local food events, no question. This year, we’re bringing in a dunking booth and giving folks green tomatoes to toss at the target and dunk high-profile chefs and honored guests. I plan to be the first in line.” When asked if she would be sitting in the booth as well as taking down her fellow foodies, Melissa threatened to throw a tomato at this reporter. So, moving on—

Look for the return of The Spazmatics, who will rock the hizzy with hits from the ‘80s. This year, the festival is also teaming up with SafeRide to make sure all festival goers make it home alive. (Cue menacing horror music.) Learn more at killertomatofest.com.

As summer settles in and my travel schedule heats up, I’m pleasantly reminded of how a bit of warm

weather brings out the best in many American towns. With recent visits to creative communities such as San Luis Obispo, CA, a place that has quite impressively been deemed the happiest and friendliest city in the country, and Chattanooga, TN, Outside Magazine’s Best Town Ever, and home to where I learned to row, I’ve found energizing recreation at every turn. Even big cities are going back to nature. Ponce City Mar-ket in Atlanta, GA is creating organic rooftop gardens, outdoor amusements and serving as a link to dynamic neighborhoods with the new BeltLine, a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit. When I’m not feeling like a rugged, outdoor excursion this summer (which, let’s face it, is often) I can only hope to be found in Charleston, SC, drink in hand, poolside at the new premier swim and social center, Mixson Bath & Racquet Club. What’s my next adventure? I just signed up for sailing lessons to begin this fall on the Hudson River in NYC, near my home office at Jamestown’s Chelsea Market. You may have heard: We’re planning some new con-struction for the north end of Westside Provisions

District. Here’s the scoop.

Construction is expected to begin sometime this summer with four weeks of infrastruc-ture work in the grass field op-posite JCT. Kitchen. That work will be followed by approxi-mately ten weeks of parking lot improvements. We’ll be grading and paving the gravel lots opposite JCT. Kitchen, ultimately adding about 100 new parking spaces. During construction, we plan to en-sure adequate parking for cli-ents by relocating employees to off-site lots and providing parking attendant and valet services in the remaining ar-eas.

Though we’ll adjust our plans as needed once construc-tion is underway, we anticipate complementary valet-only parking in the north lots most evenings after 5pm,

and we’ll have several parking attendants on duty from 10am to 5pm, directing traffic and ready to jump into valet mode if the lunch crowd demands it. Zach Wojohn of Execu-tive Parking tells us he’ll be staffing his valet service with members of Georgia Tech’s track team to ensure that cars are hustled in and out of the valet lots with ultimate speed!

Parking on the south end of the district (the White Provi-sion deck and surface lots) will be unaffected, and all businesses will be open as usual. If you have questions
