Westside FC History
Westside FC was founded by Graham Holder, our current Chairman, in May 1996 and is based at West Side Church in Wandsworth. Graham travelled to the USA in 1994 with Ambassadors in Sport to coach and evangelise in San Jose, California during the 1994 World Cup. While he was there he had a vision to form a Christian football club on his return to the UK.
In 1996 this happened. With the team only having 7 players, it joined Division 5 of the Kingston & District League (KDL). By the start of the season, the team had 17 players mainly from the West Side Church youth group. In this first season the team, player managed by Graham Holder, won KDL Division 5, the Tec Cup, and the Sportsmanship Cup and were runners-up in the League Junior Cup. Not a bad start and with Dave Doran scoring 55 goals.
The club grew to have three adult mens teams in the KDL with brothers, friends and friends of friends joining. The 1st team progressed through the divisions of the KDL and in 1999/20 were Division 2 Champions and were promoted directly to the KDL Premier Division and won this the following season 2000/01.
The club decided to have a further season in the KDL Premier and apply for promotion to the Surrey South Eastern Combination Intermediate League (SSEC) the following season. Unfortunately, the plan went wrong when the team ended 3rd. Graham decided to take a gamble and transferred the team into the SSEC Junior 1 and it gained promotion to the Intermediate League in 2002/03 by winning the last game of the season against promotion rivals Warlingham.
Graham Holder remained Manager until 2008/09 and after 12 years stepped down to manage the Res in SSEC Junior 1. His Assistant Manager, Steve Walters took over the job of 1st team manager. During those 12 years, the club won numerous trophies – see clubs honours page - including being FA Charter Standard National Adult Club of the Year 2005/06. Steve Walters led the first team to the SSEC Intermediate Division 2 title in 2014/15 and Division 1 the following season gaining promotion to the Surrey Elite League and we switched to playing our home games at AFC Croydon Athletic. In 2018/19 we finished 3rd and gained promotion to Step 6 of the National Football Structure and entered the Combined Counties Division 1. We moved to ground share with Chessington and Hook United and despite a relatively good start, our season like many others was curtailed by COVID -19. We are starting the 2020/21 season ground sharing at Colliers Wood United FC.
Also, in 2004, the club became the first Christian team to take a Mission Tour to Senegal in West Africa. A great adventure, two years of planning and a difficult one for a Christian team in a mainly Muslim country. The tour was a great success and we returned in 2007 with an even more gruelling schedule of matches, coaching and Christian evangelism. There were some very unusual pitches and football in the jungle is a real experience! We also have connections with Romania and Sierra Leone. We believe that our original vision to be a multi team club has blossomed over the years since 1996. The club has expanded greatly since starting youth and girls’ football in 2002. Under the overall control of Jane Walters, we now have over 30 youth boys teams from U7 to U18 with teams playing on both Saturday and Sunday and a ladies and two girls teams (U14 and U10). All these teams have also won numerous trophies across all levels of the club – please see the honours list in our programmes. Last year, we joined forces with Sean Innes Coaching and formed three new teams in the Surrey Youth League.

The Chairman’s view
Hi Everyone and welcome to Wibbandune. I hope you all enjoy the experience and I would ask you all to remember the COVID rules to ensure your own and others safety and ensure your time with us is a safe time.
Tonight we play our fifth league match of the season with the hope of continuing to remain unbeaten and stay at the top of the League. Our opponents are Tooting Bec who have been our local rivals for some years in different Leagues and we know it is going to be a tough encounter.
In our last home game, we lost to Abbey Rangers in the FA Vase but I believe the 3-1 score line flattered them a little. Last Saturday, we travelled to Hanwell to play Kensington and Ealing Borough. A long and traffic ridden journey and then the game started badly with us going 0-1 down after only a few minutes. Worst was to come when they scored again, leading 2-0 at half time. It had been far from our best performance but following a very strong team talk from Dean we raised our game in the second half and within ten minutes we were level with goals from Tevon Webster and Ayman Dahdouh. Another from Tevon put us in the lead and then with a couple of minutes to go, Ryan Smith turned their centre half inside out to score a great goal and complete a four goal revival.
So as I have said, tonight we welcome the Players, Officials and Supporters of Tooting Bec, along with our referee, Ben Wright and his two Assistants, Martin Etheridge and Dan Skilton. I am sure that they will make a great contribution to the enjoyment of the match without needing the assistance of VAR which is still causing great controversy in the professional game!
Does anyone really know the hand ball law!!
I must also stress that we will not tolerate racial abuse of any kind at our matches.
Those who read my comments regularly last season will know, I cannot finish these notes without a reference to God who provides the talent that enables both our players and those of our opponents to play this great game. Today I would like to refer to what Matthew says in the Bible when Jesus walks on the water during a storm in the sea of Galilee. I have always believed that, as Christians, we should, like Peter, step out of the boat and walk in faith knowing that we can achieve anything with Jesus. Look at what has happened all the times we have stepped out of the boat since Westside FC started in 1996–2020 in the FA Cup!!!!! We should all remember who gives us the talent to play and helps us to achieve our goals if we stay faithful to Gods vision. If you need to know more talk to me or our Chaplain.
May God Bless you all, players and spectators.
Please enjoy our hospitality and the game which hopefully is played in a way that is exciting, sporting and enjoyable.
Graham Holder
Welcome to our visitors . . . Tooting Bec
The Bec were only formed in 2004 on Tooting Common boasting just one side and with a completely social focus, this is just our 17th season in existence. Within 6 years and 4 promotions we achieved step 7 football and were also running a reserve side. Last season was our 2nd season in the Combined Counties League, running 6 sides including a Vets & Women’s side and we have enjoyed a good couple of seasons at all levels.
After missing out on the Surrey Elite title (Step 7) on the last day four seasons ago we came back strong and comfortably won the Elite league title by 5 points the following year gaining promotion in the process. We also tasted FA Vase action for the first time in 2017 beating Littlehampton 3-1 before going out to Fisher in the next round.
The club is based out of Tooting & Mitcham F.C. where all our sides train and play on the 3G. Our 1st team returned to the ground last season after a year playing at Raynes Park Vale FC. The first team will host visiting clubs on the stadium pitch once again this season a part of the ongoing groundshare. The facilities have given us the chance to move to the Combined Counties and Step 6 football and we have enjoyed visiting new grounds and making new friends, and despite last season be curtailed due to Covid-19 we have established ourselves at the right end of the table with a 3rd & 4th place finish under previous manager John O’Connor.
Our finest hour before the 2017/18 season’s league title victory came in 2010 when the club won the SSEC League and Cup double and were a cup final defeat away from becoming the only club ever to claim the treble. In the last few seasons the reserves and 'A' team have added to the trophy haul as the club continues to strengthen on and off the pitch. Our reserves are presently challenging at the top of Step 8 football and making their own way up the football pyramid.
The 2018/19 season, our first in the CCL, started slowly as we were sat in mid-table in early October but a great run from then till the end of the season saw us rise to an unexpected 3rd place finish in the division and qualification for the FA Cup for the first time in our history.
Last season we expected a much tougher season, however, before the season was cancelled, we were well place for promotion in 4th place and played in the FA Cup at Guildford City unfortunately going down 3-2. Covid-19 then brought a premature end to the season in March along with any hopes of promotion and a place in this seasons FA Cup, which for the first time ever was decided by a random draw.
A lot of change has happened since with manager John O’Connor moving upstairs to new Vice Chairman role and we have appointed a young talented manager in Bryan Nzinga. Once again we will be up against some big clubs and big budgets as well as a small country in Jersey but we can’t wait for the challenge and bringing our own way of doing things that has served us well until now.
