A word from the EditorSpring is in the air, the long winter is now officially over - well according to my calendar it is! With the warmer weather on its way, and the lighter evenings, we all should be feeling more positive, but spare a thought for all the flood victims around the country, whose lives will take a long time to get back to normal.Nick Carter, our Sales and Marketing Manager, has now left the company - we would like to thank Nick for all his hard work and effort with the magazines, and wish him well for the future. Patsie Fowler will be taking over from Nick in Sales and Marketing. The first two months of 2014 have flown by, and I am sure many of you are working towards planning community events; if you are, please let us know so that we can include it in our What’s On section.

Home Office support for night-time economy plans in Weston Weston-super-Mare has been chosen as one of just 20 British towns to share best practice and advice on creating a safe and vibrant night-time economy.Following a submission by North Somerset Council, the Home Office has announced that Weston will be one of its 20 Local Alcohol Action Areas.

Cllr Felicity Baker, North Somerset Council’s executive member whose portfolio includes community safety, said: “This means we will receive Home Office support in implementing our work to reduce night-time economy related crime and to ensure a vibrant town centre.”

“The Home Office has recognised the good work we have already done and our future plans. They want us to be part of a network of areas that can learn from each other.”

“We want to continue to reduce violent incidents and disorder and help transform the area to have a more family orientated and cafe culture feel.”

“We have a strong track record of working with partners on a multi-agency footing and our working relationship with the local police can only be described as excellent. We carry out high profile joint premises checks which include input from our trading standards, food safety, licensing and environmental protection teams. We have recently introduced a ‘traffic light’ scheme to monitor and take action with premises where problems are occurring. And of course our CCTV team works closely with the police by identifying issues before they escalate which helps the police in deploying their resources effectively.”

Cllr Baker added that recent developments on the seafront were already bringing a cultural change to the town. “The seafront enhancements and rebuilding of the Grand Pier have seen visitor satisfaction go up and we had over seven million visitors in 2012.”

“Local businesses have responded positively with the development of a ‘cafe culture’ streetscene following the redevelopment of Princess Royal Square. This year will see the development of Dolphin Square to include restaurants and leisure venues so we have a great opportunity to re-shape the night-time economy and bring more people

into town to enjoy a safe night out.”

Chief Inspector Alex Cohen, who looks after the North Somerset policing area, added: “This is a very positive step for Weston. We have already started work on a series of projects looking at reducing alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We are working closely with our partners and local businesses to recognise and promote places that through responsible business practices provide safe and pleasant places to socialise and that enhance the town.

“We want Weston to be a fun and interesting place for people of all ages to come to. I think we all have positive ambitions for the town and what it can offer. We will continue to work with partners and the local community to achieve this, but will deal robustly with both businesses and individuals whose behaviour impacts negatively on everyone else.”

Experienced local landlords and brothers Paul and Roger Kitching are excited to announce the opening of their new independent property letting agency, Cedarwood Property Services, based in the village of Locking.

Paul explains “We have been landlords in the Weston area for over 25 years gaining a vast amount of knowledge and experience along the way.”

Roger adds “We see this as a natural progression. Having built our own portfolio, we know how much landlords rely on their agents to provide a prompt, focused and professional service.

We specialise in letting and all aspects of property management”.

Based in Locking Village, Cedarwood Property Services are ideally placed for all areas in and around Weston and the new housing developments. The offices at Manor Court are located on a main bus route and have plenty of customer parking.

responding to tHe FLooding crisis in soMersetThe impact of the floods in Somerset is increasingly serious.

Communities in Somerset have reached a crisis point as they cope with extensive and long-term flooding. For many it is the second time in two years they have been affected, with whole communities being cut off for weeks. The response within the communities themselves has been magnificent but there is only so much they can do for themselves. As part of our Surviving Winter campaign Somerset Community Foundation is urgently appealing for donations to relieve the immediate hardship people are facing and support their recovery over the coming weeks and months. With your help, we will help families and communities get back on their feet as quickly as possible..

Wrington flood relief scheme approvedPA scheme to reduce the impact of flooding in a North Somerset village has moved a step closer, following approval from the Environment Agency.Proposals for a flood relief scheme at Wrington were put to the agency’s project assurance board at the end of January, and were approved, meaning the council can now work up a detailed design for the scheme and work with members of the local community.

Approval means also means that the DEFRA funding needed to complete the scheme will be released, adding to contributions already secured from the council, Wessex Water, and the developer – supported by Wrington Parish Council.

The scheme will be delivered in two phases, with works to double the size of the culvert at Garston’s Orchard being completed by March 2014.

The larger second phase of the scheme involves creating a flood storage area upstream of the village, and is not due to begin until April 2015.

Cllr Peter Bryant, executive member for the environment said: “Wrington was badly affected by floods in North Somerset in 2012 and this scheme will be instrumental in

reducing the impact of flooding in the village. To date, the council has completed 145 relief schemes with a further 61 due to be completed by the end of March.”

All tHree WestOn LiFeboats exercise – despite tHe diFFicuLties.Weston-super-Mare RNLI volunteers have launched all three lifeboats to ensure that they, and the crews, are ready for service. The RNLI lifeboats at Weston-super-Mare are not all in one station at present. As the volunteer crews cannot cross the Birnbeck Island Pier, except in case of a life being at risk, their main base is now the temporary lifeboat station which has been positioned at Knightstone Harbour. Here, a relief D Class Lifeboat, D690, has been housed ready for immediate use. The two main Weston lifeboats are still housed on Birnbeck Island in the Boat Shed there. It is hoped that in the not too distant future another temporary station can be found where these two lifeboats can be housed until a brand new station can be built. However, the Knightstone Harbour dries out and so can only be used for three hours on either side of high tide. It has always been intended that if a life-threatening emergency arises at low water crews can go across the Birnbeck pier and launch from there. This was indeed the case some weeks ago when Birnbeck station had to be used. The current situation has several difficulties. First, the crews are only able to exercise on the relief D Class out of Knightstone Harbour. They cannot go across the Birnbeck Pier for exercise. This means they are not getting the regular experience they have been used to when based on Birnbeck. It also means the two lifeboats on Birnbeck are not getting the regular use so vital to keep them in first rate condition ready for a call whenever it comes. As a result it was decided a special exercise would take place. The relief D Class was launched from Knightstone late March and ferried all of the crew, including shore crew, over to Birnbeck Island. Once there they launched the two lifeboats from Birnbeck and were then able to spend the morning exercising using all three lifeboats. At the conclusion of the exercise the crews were ferried back to Knightstone.Mike Buckland senior helmsman at Weston station said;’ We found it a very useful experience. Blew away a few cobwebs and most of us noticed some skill fade with boats, tractors and procedures so it just goes to prove we all have to keep the training up and not forget Birnbeck. Keeping current could just help avoid an accident or problem with a shout in the middle of the night when brains are slightly fuddled!’

tecHnoLogy corner with DOLLYLEVI ITThis month, we take a look at our favourite ‘App’ of the momentIf you’re like us, you probably find that typing a text message into your phone can be a bit of a faff - especially if you have fingers like boxing gloves!

That’s why we like “MightyText” (www.mightytext.net).

One of the best things about MightyText is that is FREE!

Now, whilst not everything free is necessarily good, this fantastic App for Android and PC is rather exceptional. It’s very easy to set up. Download the app to your Android Smartphone from the Google Play shop, download the desktop programme onto your PC or Laptop, link the two together with your Google account and you are ready start texting from your computer screen using the nice, big keys on your keyboard.

All your contacts are synchronised from your phone and you can see up to 8 message threads on the go at any one time. The programme uses your phone to send the messages as long as it is connected to a WiFi network - using any free texts you have on your phone package (or it will cost the same as a pay-as-you-go text message).

You can also send photos and – what we really like – there is the ability to use the dial button on your computer screen to get MightyText to make your phone dial your contact without you needing to search on your phone!

We hope you find MightyText as useful as we do.

R/2847 Able Seaman Charles William Lang was born in Worle on 9th August 1893, to Henry Lang, a labourer and Rosina Harriet Jane Lang

(nee Vowles). He was baptised, at the same time as his brother, in St. Martin’s Church on 14th March 1894.

After leaving school he joined the staff of Mr W. T. Salisbury, of Meadow Street in Weston-super-Mare. Much of his leisure time he devoted to duties as a member of the Weston-super-Mare

detachment of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

He met and married Edith Annie Phillips in 1913 and had a son, Reginald Charles, in 1915. They lived in Tokio Villa, Greenwood Road, Worle. Prior to joining the Anson Brigade he was a private with the 2/1st South Notts Hussars and serial number 281419, for 4 months, the 2/9th Middlesex Regiment for 8 months and the Somerset Light Infantry for 2 months. He was finally transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Royal Naval Division, on 18th June 1917.

He was drafted for the British Expeditionary Force on 9th July 1917, where he joined the Anson Battalion. He was reported as missing on October 26th 1917, whist serving with the BEF in Flanders. His widow was sent a letter from Signaller R Sutton, stating that he had found his body, together with a photograph of her and their son. Although Charles was not of his battalion, he had buried him and placed a cross on his grave, together with his name and battalion. This seems to have been misplaced, since Charles is commemorated on Panel 2 to 3 and 162 to 162A of the Tyne Cot Memorial. He was awarded the Victory and British War medals.

Where was the Pig and Whistle?According to local newspaper correspondent of 1856, the village of Worle at one time had a rather dubious reputation which of late was much improved. Drunkenness and revels numbered amongst its many iniquities! However things had gone downhill again by 1859, when disturbances at the Pig and Whistle in Leather Lane had been noted. It was an ale house run by a seemingly respectable widow and frequented by the Tailor Jack and his nemesis, Black Sam.This had to be dealt with and the “committee appointed for the removal of nuisances at Worle” undertook the task. The establishment was taken over by Daniel Gill in 1860 and the church bells are said to have been rung in celebration of the event.

Where were Leather Lane and the Pig & Whistle? No early map plots either. Perhaps a report in the Bristol Mercury of January 1859 throws some light on the question. In the first case held at Weston Police Court, Robert Seaman summoned Thomas Bailey for assaulting him in his home at Worle. In the next case Bailey claimed unpaid wages from Seaman for his work which appears to have involved drinking and smoking with his employer. This was followed by a case where Seamen accused John Perry of setting fire to his house. Perry was a tailor, could he have been Tailor Jack? Then in the following case William Wood accused Seaman of attempting to burn down the house, which he owned and rented to Seaman. Whilst living in the adjoining accommodation.

PC 90 testified that he was frequently called to Seaman’s house which was “the resort of the greatest blackguards of Worle, Bleadon and Weston”.William wood can be found in the Census of 1861 living in a house along Ebdon Road but which fronts out onto a short lane, could it have been Leather Lane, Wood also had a widowed daughter living with him.The 1871 census reveals Ann Badman, another widow, running a beer house; in what appears to be much the same situation.Robert Seaman had a brother, Samuel, who was constantly in trouble; he can be found in later census resident in Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Was he Black Sam?

Later adverts in the Bristol Mercury refer to the Crown Inn and the Golden Crown in Ebdon Road, Worle.

WestOn HOsPICeAbout Weston HospicecareFounded by the community in 1989, Weston Hospicecare, provides physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care to local people with life limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart or lung failure.

The Hospice’s care reaches out to local people in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset and border areas of Somerset providing a safe haven and source of comfort and guidance to every single person who needs it.

The Hospice consists of a day hospice, a ten bed In-patient Unit, a team of Hospice Community Nurse Specialists, Hospice at home, chaplaincy and bereavement services.

These complementary services work in harmony to ensure patients receive excellent specialist care, be that at home or in the Hospice, and that they and their families are cared for and reassured throughout the toughest experience they will ever face.

All of this is provided free of charge and it costs nearly £3 million every year to keep the Hospice doors open, of which only 19% is funded by the NHS. The rest is raised each year through the generosity of the local community, fundraising events, partnerships with local companies, the hospice lottery and via the network of Hospice shops.

recycling and waste services performing well Early indications show that North Somerset Council’s waste and recycling services are performing well during 2013/14, which is good news for council tax payers and the environment.

The council had previously seen an increase in refuse being presented at the kerbside, but this trend has now reversed following the Don’t Waste It campaign which saw waste advisers offering advice about recycling across the district.

The amount of refuse presented at the kerbside for collection during the first nine months of 2013/4 was 105 tonnes less than the same period in 2012/3 and it is hoped that this trend will continue, keeping the recycling rate at around 59%.

After everything that can be recycled, reused or composted has been recovered, over 40,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste remain, costing the council around £4m per year to treat or dispose of.

Residents are urged to think twice before throwing items away that could be placed in their kerbside recycling boxes for collection. For more information about what is collected at the kerbside and collection dates visit www.n-somerset.gov.uk/recycle.

Over 18,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste is sent to a mechanical biological treatment plant which turns it into a fuel source, and efforts to further reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill could be improved when the council considers a new waste treatment contract to divert an extra 10,000 tonnes for treatment per annum.

In total, the amount of non-recyclable waste sent for treatment or to landfill is expected to be nearly 3,000 tonnes less than it was in 2012/13. Much of this reduction is in relation to the fall in the amount brought to the district’s three recycling centres following the introduction of a van permit scheme and the success of our parks and street cleansing contractor in reducing the amount of street sweeping and beach waste going to landfill.

Cllr Peter Bryant, executive member with responsibility for waste and recycling services said: “With the spiralling cost of waste disposal, it is crucial that the council continues to recycle as much as possible and prevent waste going to landfill. Although this is encouraging news, we must all continue to recycle as much as possible.”

Spring is on its way and hopefully the warmer, drier weather is just round the corner after a wet winter!

However this brings new areas for us to focus our attention on.

Bunnies become one of our main concerns as the weather warms up and we want to help all bunny owners understand their needs. The main problem bunnies suffer from in warm weather is a condition called Flystrike. This is where flies lay eggs in your bunnies coat which then hatch into maggots. The maggots then eat away at the flesh and if left unnoticed can be fatal.

Bunnies with dirty bottoms are most prone to this awful condition as it provides a wonderful environment for the flies to lay eggs. If your bunny is overweight, old or stiff, has poor hygiene or a dirty hutch they are more likely to have a dirty bottom.

It is vital to keep your bunnies hutch as clean as possible in the warm months and check their bottoms at least twice daily. If your bunny is a little overweight this is the time to help them lose it!

Here at Green Pastures we provide a ‘Bunny Offer’ package from April onwards. In the offer we apply a product called Rearguard which helps prevent Flystrike and lasts for 10 weeks. Also included in the offer is a full vet examination, dental check, nail clip, goodie bag and much more!

We have more excellent offers for bunny owners and provide consultations if you have any queries.

For more information or to book your bunny in for the offer please call us or pop into the surgery.

If you have any questions or need some advice, please contact us on

look up! and get more space at home for just £325We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day?

In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place can quickly be turned into an easily accessed space ideal for storage. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it?

And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Weston area and is run by skilled local, John Crilly, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.

“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says John. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”

The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. John provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

Two members of the Weston RNLI Lifeboat crew are also members of the RNLI Flood Rescue Team. This service can be called at any time when people need to be rescued from fast flowing flood water. Up until now most of the rescue

services working in the flooded areas in the UK have been by Fire and Rescue, Environment Agency, Police and Military Personnel as the problems have not been of the fast water nature for which the RNLI team train. However the situation in Berkshire had got so bad that their help was requested.Liam McDermott and Nigel Congram, both helmsman but also trained flood rescue team members arrived in West Berkshire on Friday along with the other members of the team. Their first task was to recce the flooded village of Datchet but as they were on their way there they came across a BMW car stranded in the flood water with its driver trapped. The driver was recovered by a wading team and transferred to Windsor Fire station where he was looked after by the Red Cross. The car was pushed out of the flood water.Their other main task that day was to check on the condition of staff and occupants of an old people’s home cut off by the floods. The following day they were tasked with checking on the condition of occupants of the houseboats at Eton and Windsor.

They were then stood down on Sunday morning to return to their home towns. The rest of the RNLI Lifeboat crew were at home and fast asleep when, at 0315 on Sunday morning, their pagers sounded. A distressed man had been reported making his way towards the tideline at Weston. Swansea Coastguard called for the lifeboat. It was at low water so the lifeboat at Knightstone Temporary Station could not be launched. However as life was a risk, Swansea Coastguard authorised the launch of the Atlantic 75 Lifeboat which is still housed on Birnbeck Island. Such launches are now only authorised if life is in danger, due to the poor nature of the access pier. The crew raced down to Birnbeck but before they could launch the lifeboat the police managed to detain the man before he had got too deeply into the sea. The lifeboat was stood down and the crew retried to bed.Charlie Conroy, Lifeboat Operations Manager Designate of Weston-super-Mare said; ‘It is pleasing to note that our plan for using the Birnbeck Lifeboat if life was in danger and we could not use Knightstone, worked well. Despite everyone being in bed the Birnbeck Lifeboat was ready to launch within 5 minutes of the call. We are waiting for another temporary station where we can keep the Atlantic lifeboat and, of course, we are all desperately hoping we will soon have news of our brand new fully equipped permanent station for which the Appeal is progressing.‘

Weston-super-Mare rnlI Volunteers kept busy during the bad weather. Some Weston-super-Mare RNLI crew members joined the RNLI Flood Rescue Team in Berkshire while their comrades had their sleep disturbed at home.
