A word from the EditorWelcome to the June issue of the Weston & Worle View.Flaming June, well let’s just call it June, even though the weather has not been good, lets hope it improves for the excellent events coming up this month.

Looking forward to the coming summer months. There are a host of new events going on around the town, especially the new Summer Sets music festival on the beach. The music scene in Weston is gathering pace, a few years ago very little was going on, but now there always seems to be a gig going on every night. Check out our local Gig Guide on pages 24-25.

For all you Beatles fans out there, next month’s issue will have a article on when The Beatles came to Weston 50 years ago. If you have any stories or photos we could use, please get incontact with us.

Birnbeck Pier - a history

Birnbeck Pier holds a unique place among British Piers, being the only one that links to an offshore island. This natural pier-head could probably be considered as the most obvious use of the small island during the heyday of pier building, and it is somewhat surprising that it took so long to come to fruition. Work had originally begun in 1847 on a suspension bridge to link to the island, but proved so problematic that it was later abandoned, and it took a further 20 years before the townsfolk were again rallied into providing the funds for Weston-super-Mare’s first pier.

Costing £20,000, and designed by the famous engineer Eugenius Birch, the foundation stone of Birnbeck Pier was laid on 28th October 1864. As this was considered locally to be such an important event, the day was declared a public holiday. Three years later the pier was complete, opening on 6th June 1867. Consisting of a 1,040ft (315m), iron and timber promenade to Birnbeck Island, with a concrete landing jetty extending a further 99ft (30m), Birnbeck Pier also had a small pavilion.

The two images above and top-right opposite, depict Birnbeck Pier at its height, between 1910 and the early-1930s.

We would like to thank the heritage trail for their copy contributions.

1882 saw the first lifeboat stationed on the island, slung from a set of davits, and further improved facilities for the island were made possible as a result of Birnbeck Pier’s prosperity from regular steamer traffic. New refreshment rooms were built along with a large concert hall, reading rooms and a much-needed extension to the pavilion. Four years later a new low water jetty opened on the southwest side of Birnbeck Pier, and in 1889 a purpose built lifeboat house was finally constructed. As the pier-head was an island, as opposed to being an integral part of the iron structure, all buildings had the advantage of being constructed of stone. This didn’t prevent them suffering badly from fire damage and most of the structures, with the exception of the switchback railway, were destroyed by fire on Boxing Day 1897.

The turn of the new century saw the Birnbeck Pier Company’s fortunes change. Although a new lifeboat station had been built to the south side of the pier in 1901, the low water and north jetties were both destroyed in a gale in 1903. A year later, despite vigorously campaigning against the parliamentary bill to allow the construction of a new pier, the Company were forced to witness the opening of a rival; the Grand Pier, further along the resort. The north jetty of Birnbeck Pier was rebuilt in steel and reopened in 1905, but the low water jetty remained closed until 1910.

In 1909 plans for a concrete platform on the south side came to fruition, increasing the pier area by nearly half an acre, and allowing for many new rides to be installed. This effort to attract customers from its nearby rival was successful, and throughout the 1920s and early 1930s Birnbeck Pier again prospered. However, when the new funfair opened on Grand Pier this signalled the gradual decline of Birnbeck Pier.

Taken over by the Admiralty in 1941, as HMS Birnbeck, the complex was used as a secret weapon testing facility. On one occasion serious damage was incurred by a Wellington Bomber dropping a dummy mine. After hostilities had ceased the pier was handed back to the owners, and steamer services resumed. In 1962 the Birnbeck Pier was purchased by the steamer operating company, P & A Campbell’s, but as passenger numbers fell their ownership was short lived. John Critchley bought Birnbeck Pier in 1972 and it enjoyed a temporary revival as a Victorian pleasure centre. It was grade II listed by the Department of the Environment in 1974 but, by 1975, it was again on the market. On 19th October 1979 the last scheduled sailing from Birnbeck Pier was made by the MV Balmoral, marking the end of 92 years of service in the Bristol Channel by P & A Campbell’s.

In 1989 hopes were raised for the near derelict pier’s long term future when a prospective buyer announced a scheme to construct a new multi-million pound marina complex. However, these plans collapsed when the Nature Conservancy Council intervened. Birnbeck Pier suffered extensive storm damage in 1990, and it was finally closed to the

public by the local authority in 1994.

So, what of the pier’s future today?

Birnbeck Pier, like the Tropicana, holds much affection with the local community and while this remains the case, a major part of Weston-super-Mare’s heritage may yet be saved for future generations to enjoy.

Weston Package UpdateWork at the five Weston Package sites got underway last month.

Before any major work can begin at junction 21 the contractors have to carry out a process called destructive searching. This involves using diggers to move earth around while looking for endangered species. If any are found they are safely relocated. The site office also had to be built before work can get fully underway, starting with the inside of the motorway roundabout.

Construction is well underway at Marchfields Way, with excavation of the area that will be the new roundabout.

The kerbing surrounding the right hand turn onto Winterstoke Road was removed in May and the turn will be closed for a while. Those wanting to turn right will need to use the Drove Road roundabout.

Worle Parkway has been excavated and had new drainage added. The site is currently being levelled.

Elmham Way has mostly focused on diverting services, such as electricity cables and gas pipes.

Crews have been able to slightly change the plans at Queensway. By raising the ground level slightly they have been able to avoid rerouting some major services.

Vulcans last fly-byThe line-up for Weston Air Day 2013 continues to grow with the latest news that the last flying Vulcan V Bomber in the world will be taking to the skies at the event on Saturday June 22.

This iconic aircraft is a huge hit with visitors whenever it flies, and promises to be a firm crowd favourite. It is rumoured that this could be the last year to see the Vulcan flying in UK skies, so this will be a rare and evocative occasion.

The Vulcan Bomber was used by the RAF from 1956 to 1984, and was last used operationally on the famous Black Buck raid on Stanley Airfield during the Falklands conflict in 1982, shortly before it retired from service.

The Vulcan joins an expanding line-up of aviation stars including the bill-topping RAF Red Arrows display team, the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Dancing Tiger Moth, a delightful 1930s bi-plane.

Thanks to Paul Dopson/Flight Global for the Vulcan Image taken at Farnborough.

The day-long event is being organised by North Somerset Council and promises something for everyone with a host of ground-based action and attractions as well as the airborne displays.

Visitors to the event are being encouraged to arrive early to make the most of the day. Cllr Felicity Baker, executive member for tourism said: “With such a stellar line-up of aviation favourites, we’re expecting crowds to flock to Weston to see the shows, so my advice to everyone is turn up early to enjoy the day.”

To register for email updates about the air day and other events in North Somerset email [email protected].

The current provisional list of participants is:

The Red Arrows; RAF Parachute Team, the Falcons; RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight; RAF advanced turboprop trainer, the Tucano; the mighty AVRO Vulcan V Bomber; Pitts Special aerobatics display team, Team Trig; The Dancing Tiger Moth 1930s biplane; The mainstay of the Royal Navy, the solo Lynx helicopter; weird but wonderful, the kids favourite - the Gyrocopter.

There is nothing more Italian then a Lambretta. The very name oozes cool Milan chic and style. Even before the heady days of MOD in the early sixties, the Innocenti Lambrettas were the iconic scooter of many a scooter club in Britain. The vehicle of people who wanted cheap and reliable transport, with an extra something..........

Ferdinand Innocenti began his tubular steel manufacture before the Second World War. But as with many companies after the war, industry looked toward reconstruction and in this case, motoring. The Lambretta mark itself was named after the region of ‘Lambrate’ around Milan.

After the war, cheap and convenient forms of transportation were needed, and so Innocenti created a scooter for people who couldn’t afford more expensive forms of getting from ‘A to B’.

After initial local success, export was necessary, and the first ‘Lambrettas’ were imported into this country by James Agg of Aldershot, who saw a huge potential market in austere Britain.

The industry grew rapidly. Cheap and reliable transport for the masses. By the mid-50’s, Lambretta had its own stand at the Earls Court Motor Show.

Many clubs grew up across the country in the late 50’s including local Somerset clubs, such as the Weston-super-Mare based ‘Seagulls’ and later ‘The Pathfinders’.

The 60’s saw Lambrettas become sleeker and more sophisticated and with the series 3, some of the most iconic scooters ever designed. However, times were changing. The general public had more disposable income and were moving toward cheap, and more practical, family cars.

Ferdinand Innocenti himself died in 1966, but the company continued to manufacture scooters and introduce new models, right up until they ceased production in 1972.

Many people (unless they are involved in the scooter scene) are un-aware that the largest Lambretta museum (including memorabilia) in the world, is situated right on their doorstep. (The largest collection of unique and prototype Scooters being in Milan).

The Lambretta Museum, based in Weston-super-Mare, was set up in the mid 90’s by Nigel Cox, a life long Lambretta engineer, mechanic, and later author of ‘Lambretta: An Illustrated History’.

Nigel Cox retired in December 2006 and the reins were taken up and expanded by Stuart Lanning, previously the publisher, editor and owner of SCOOTERING magazine. The museum has been upgraded and successfully run by Stuart since 2008. Open to all and freely accessable.

The collection covers the Lambretta range from the late 40’s with the model A right up to the last of the Innocenti Lambrettas, including three wheelers. The museum includes vast amounts of memorabillia, posters, magazines and promotional material of all kinds.

If you wish to visit the museum, it is open from Monday to Saturday 11am-3pm.

Alternatively, ring ahead on 01934 417834 to check out opening times.

40551 private Frederick Charles Drew was born in Morchard Bishop, Devon, in 1892 to Robert and Alice Marie (nee Southcott) Drew. His uncle, Abram Robert Southcott, who lived in Lower Bristol Road (now High Street), ran

a butcher shop in Worle and Frederick later moved to Worle to live with him and also to work as his assistant. Whilst in Worle he met his future wife, Elsie Rogers, who he married at the Wesleyan Ebenezer Chapel, Worle, on 13th February 1913. They were both aged 21. They lived

in Glencoe Villas and had two sons, Frederick James, born 21st June 1913 and Roderick Frank, born 23rd February 1915. Just prior to joining the army, Frederick was employed as a bakerby Mr Stower, in Worle.

Frederick originally enlisted in the Somerset Light Infantry on 19th July 1916, with service number 26403. He was later transferred to the 11th battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, with a new service number of 40551. On the morning of the 16th August 1917 Frederick was involved in an attack on

the German trenches and, whilst advancing in the face of intense shell and machine gun fire, fell mortally wounded. Unfortunately, he does not have an identified grave and is commemorated on panel 70-72 of the Tyne Cot Memorial, in Belgium.

He was awarded the British War and Victory medals.

Mayor visits Weston and Worle ViewIn one of their final engagements as Mayor and Mayoress of Weston-super-Mare, Cllr. David Hitchins and Mrs Carol Hitchins visited the offices of The Weston and Worle View to mark the launch of Pony Publishing Ltd – a new service which aims to provide a one-stop shop for businesses’ print and marketing solutions.

Managing Director, Steve Drew, told his visitors how the company’s experience and contacts within the print industry allows Pony Publishing to provide the best value service matched to the clients’ needs.

“We have been successful in building up the reputation of The Weston and Worle View Community Magazine, and our advertisers have been asking us to provide other services, such as leaflet and banner printing, and so Pony Publishing seemed the obvious next step”, he said.

Cllr. And Mrs Hitchins also met with Pony Publishing’s sales and design teams who, together with the marketing and promotional consultants, make up the range of expertise on offer.

Cllr. Hitchins said, “It’s great to see that, even in these difficult times, local businesses continue to go from strength to strength”.

British Cycling’s Breeze, the biggest programme ever to get more women riding their bikes for fun, has joined forces with this year’s Great Weston Ride to encourage even more women to get out on

their bikes and experience the enjoyment and sense of achievement that this West Country challenge ride offers. The event, which is taking place on Sunday 21st July, starts in Bristol and then takes riders on a fabulous journey through the Mendips and across the Somerset Levels before finishing 56 miles later on the seafront in Weston-super-Mare.Over 800 riders are expected to take part this year and the organisers – and Breeze – are hoping to see more women than ever giving it a go.British Cycling’s Natalie Justice explained: “We know that the Great Weston Ride already attracts large numbers of women entrants, including lots of women who are taking on their first long-distance cycling challenge, and we’re going to work with the organisers to see if we can get even more women taking part. The whole ethos and feel of the event fits very nicely with what we’re trying to do at Breeze - there’s no pressure whatsoever on riders, it’s a very attractive and manageable route, and everyone’s really well looked-after from entry through to crossing the finish line. So it’s a great opportunity to encourage even more women to take on the Great Weston Ride and see for themselves what they’re capable of achieving.”“This partnership is also a great way to mark the second anniversary of the Breeze programme, we’ve already helped thousands more women feel confident and comfortable about going on a ride and we have over 450 Breeze champions across England who organise bike

rides on a daily basis. Without their amazing energy, enthusiasm and commitment to get women bike riding, we simply wouldn’t be able to offer these exciting experiences. And as a result of initiatives like Breeze, the number of women cycling has risen dramatically in the last 12 months – almost 63,000 more women are cycling regularly.” Great Weston Ride Organiser Darren McKimm commented: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Breeze on board, and we feel very honoured to have been selected as one of the key events to help to promote the Breeze message The support from Breeze is a tremendous ‘thumbs up’ for the Ride, and should help us to add to the large numbers of women who’ve already experienced the enjoyment and achievement that the Ride brings.”The event certainly received lots of very positive rider feedback last year, typical of which was Becci Quick from Bristol, who commented: “As my first ever cycling event, I thought it would be intimidating setting off with the seasoned cyclists but everyone was so friendly, welcoming and encouraging that I loved the day and can’t wait to do it again and again. It was an amazing day.”The Great Weston Ride is already a very popular event and, with the Breeze Network now also behind it, there’s every chance that there will be even more women taking part - and leaving plenty more comments like these - this year!Further information, and details on how to enter, can be found atwww.greatwestonride.com.

A new barber shop has recently opened on Woodborough Road in Winscombe, by local businessman Glenn Alexander and his wife Jane.

Glenn said ‘We have had a tremendous response since opening the shop and we’re all very pleased by the number of customers to date. Winscombe and the surrounding villages have some really good

hairdressers but no barber shops, so we knew it was the ideal location when the shop became available. We are delighted by how the shop looks now the renovation is complete’.The decision to branch out comes following the success of their barber shop in Orchard Place, Weston-s-Mare, established some 10 years ago.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!Hollywood comes in Bucket FullsLIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!Hollywood comes in Bucket FullsWeston’s seafront movie scene is now in full swing. Twenty of the world’s greatest sand sculptors have arrived in sunny Weston-super-Mare from nine different countries to create the town’s very own HOLLYWOOD on the beach. The sand here in Weston is very special and is perfect for creating sand sculptures. One of the artists, Rachel Stubbs (UK) said:“The shape of the grain is very important, it must have sharp angles, be fine and contain enough silt to bind it together. Weston is very lucky because with this and we can create enormous sculptures and make fine details.”

Those of you that have already strolled along Westons promenade must have noticed the sculptures poking over the top of the fences. Having been open since March, the sculptures are proving a hit with the public.CBBC’s Deadly Art presenter and Co-organiser of the project, Nicola Wood says:“We have a fantastic team of artists this year. We knew when we decided to create Hollywood that we must bring in the stars, and we have! We even have world champions on site”The usual interactive workshops and tours are available, and some extra-special photo opportunities have been created.

The festival is open daily from 11-5pm.

Observatory goesUnpluggedThe Observatory in Worle, Weston-super-Mare, is starting its own series of FREE Unplugged gigs by local musicians from Thursday May 30th.

“Every weekend we put on regular mainstream entertainment” explained Kevin O’Connor, who runs the pub. “We wanted to provide something a bit different for our customers so we decided to put on a series of acoustic nights on the last Thursday of each month.

Every Thursday, 3 or 4 up and coming acts will get the chance to strut their stuff in front of an appreciative audience. What’s different about this is that every artist gets to present a proper set.

Well known local singer-songwriter Johnny Edgar will host the proceedings on the last Thursday of every month until September 26th

If you’d like to add your voice to the list, get in touch with Kevin on 07881 304262

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!The ‘What a Load of Rubbish’ recycling campaign gets a business boost from Sainsbury’s and MacDonald’s

Vital Recycle UK’s campaign to collect 20 tonnes of cardboard and in turn raise funds for Kewstoke Junior Football Club, is on route to smashing their target, thanks to the help of Sainsbury’s and MacDonald’s.

A number of other Weston based companies have also got involved and as well as helping the club are increasing their recycling rates dramatically and realising just how easy and cost effective it is to do. The scheme has also promoted recycling to the young players who have been enthusiastic throughout.

Vital Recycle UK has a wide range of tailor made waste management and recycling solutions and can also offer advice and support on recycling needs.

Visit www.vitalrecycleuk.co.uk to check their progress and see who is taking part or contact Ben on 07854 661833 to get involved.
