WELCOME TO WOKING PARK
Good afternoon, and welcome back to Woking Park for our first competitive
game since the defeat to Chertsey back on Saturday 7 March, in front of a
season’s best crowd of over 250.
At that time, Westfield were lying fifth in the league, in a play-off position, and
who knows how the season might have finished. The last games in the Isthmian
League were played on 11 March, and by 23rd we were all in full lockdown. The
(football) world has been shaken by the Covid-19 virus this year, and many things
will be different for sometime, but I do sense a desire from many people to
overcome, re-build, start anew and make the best of a very traumatic situation.
Here at Westfield, that’s exactly where we are, both on and off the pitch. Our
manager of more than four seasons, Tony Reid, left in April for pastures new,
along with most of his immediate staff and many players. The committee have
moved quickly and positively to install Simon Lane, a well-respected coach with
proven skills, qualifications and no little experience at this level. He brings with
him Matt Brown and Garreth Newton as coaching staff, and we warmly welcome
them all. We have already played a few pre-season friendly games, with varying
results and player outcomes, all part of the inevitable re-building now required.
You can read Simon’s early thoughts for Westfield and the new season elsewhere
in this publication.
We would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to our Match Officials and
all those who have travelled over from Frimley for today’s game, and we hope
that you enjoy your day out, our facilities and hospitality,
and have a safe journey home.
If we could ask you to respect the government guidelines, and consider your
social distancing and regular use of hand sanitiser, this will I’m sure mean that we
all have an enjoyable afternoon. As required by FA and Government guidelines,
we have produced a risk assessment which you will find on our website.
Our first league game is next Saturday (home vs Northwood), so we come into
this FA Cup tie against Combined Counties club Frimley Green on the back of a
promising 1-0 friendly win against Walton Casuals in last Saturday’s
solid defensive display.
Our visitors from Frimley reached this round by beating Fareham Town 1-0 last
Tuesday (a penalty by Reece Connolly in the 63rd minute) in what was clearly a
physical game. We have played our rivals from just 10 miles away surprisingly
little in recent years, the last time being a Combined Counties league game in
2014, which ended 7-3, so we look forward to similar excitement and goalmouth
action this afternoon! This is our first encounter with the Frimmers in the FA Cup,
with the next round of this competition scheduled for Tuesday 22 September.
Enjoy the game,
Neil Collins

FIRST TEAM FIXTURES 2020-21
WELCOME to our visitors FRIMLEY GREEN FC
The club was founded in 1919 and currently play at Frimley Green Recreation Ground.
The present clubhouse was erected in 1972 when ‘The Green’ played in the London
Spartan League and used a pitch on the lower part of the park with the changing
rooms where the car park now is. A few years later a new pitch was laid adjacent to
the clubhouse and changing rooms were added. The Reserve Team joined the Com-
bined Counties League in 1979 and at the start of the 1981/82 season the First Team
switched across and Floodlights were installed for the first time. The Club competed
in the League for a period of 15 years, during which time they won the Dan Air Elite
Cup and the Reserves won the Division One Challenge Cup.
In 1994 the club voluntarily dropped down into the Surrey Intermediate League
(Western). After four seasons of consolidation the club joined the Surrey Premier
League in 1999, after finishing Runners-up and winning the League Cup. Off the field
new Floodlights were installed. A 3 year spell followed, in the renamed Surrey Senior
League, which saw the club finish fourth, sixth and Runners –up and attain promotion
back into the Combined Counties League where they have played since. Season 2004
-05 was the most successful to date, finishing in 15th Place with 58 points.
Season 2005-06 was very disappointing on the playing front but we managed to
avoid finishing in a relegation position, however, despite substantial ground improve-
ments we were demoted on ‘ground grading’, to make way for 7 clubs from the old
Ryman Division two. In the next 4 seasons in Division One we had mixed fortunes,
finishing 6th at the end of season 2007/08 but then in season 2008/09 finished 3rd
from bottom but had our most successful season ever in the FA Vase, reaching the
third round and won an FA Cup match for the first time. In season 2009/10 we man-
aged to finish high enough up the table to retain our FA Cup place but 2010/11 was a
poor season. 2011/12 saw the appointment of Paul Miles and Ian Maynard mid-season
and in 2012/13 we won the Division One title and won 3 FA Vase games along the
way. In 2013/14 Paul and Ian left us and this led to a turbulent couple of seasons and
relegation. 2015/16 saw another mid-table finish. During 2016/17 John Cook and Jamie
Daltry took over and in 2017/18 Roland Baker joined the coaching team. Season
2018/19 saw us finish second by 1 point to earn promotion and win the Division One
cup and win an FA cup game away from home for the first time. We were also un-
beaten at home in the League all season. The 2019/20 season was cancelled by Covid
19 lockdown and the restart in 2020/21 begins with a new management team of Nick
Thumwood and Callum Nimmo and a new squad of players.
Nick has been involved in non league football since the age of 15 and was
one of the stars of Paul Miles's Division 1 title winning side of 2012, he also
part of the Badshot promotion winning side in 2017/2018 and whilst injured
he was influential off the pitch during our recent 2018/2019 promotion and
cup winning campaign which is where Nick showed his passion for football
on the sidelines. Nick is very well thought of through the club and he has
gained a lot of respect from his fellow teammates, supporters and managers.
Callum Nimmo is stepping into management for the first time after a long
playing career, where he started off his men’s career in football at Aldershot
town, and playing in the combined counties for the last 7-8 spending most
of his years captaining Badshot lea and helping them gain promotion to the
CCL premier division back in 2018, as well as playing for Frimley towards the
end of his career, unfortunately this lead to a career ending injury however
Callum continued to be a regular visitor to the ground.

MATCH REPORT
Frimley Green 1 Fareham Town 0
by Matthew Flude
When new managers Nick and Calum took over, I doubt they would have thought their
first competitive game as managers, would have been an FA Cup Fixture, but where
ever their careers take them, it's certainly got off to a fantastic start!
Whilst many don't look into pre season results, and I am quite similar in that regards,
one thing It has shown is this new look Frimley side are there to battle, work as a unit
and win, and they certainly took what they learnt in pre season into this fixture.
Both sides will be able to say they gave their all last night, it wasn't a great attacking
affair, and being honest I don't think either keeper had an actual save to make, other
than a couple of cross/shots. This wasn't due to a lack of intent, but more of a well
organised midfield battle between the sides and both sets of managers would have
come away very pleased with the energy and the ground covered by the players out
their.
From the opening stages, it was clear it was going to be physical game, both sets of
players well up for the game and with the incredible attendance, including the vocal
Frimley faithful and the fantastic Fareham following, it was a cracking fixture despite
the lack of actual goal mouth action, it had a derby game feel about it, either side
would have been worthy winners from this fixture and both will probably have players
certainly feeling the effects of the game today.
The goal itself, came from a penalty won by Reece Connolly, introduced at Halftime,
and it was a decision that to be fair, you've seen them given, seen them waved away...
but either way, it was awarded and Connolly calmly slotted it home.
There was a second claim of a penalty for Frimley very late on which could have set-
tled the nerves of the managers, however the ref was blind sided and the assistant was
confident it wasn't a pen, funny old game football, as that one was a more clear cut
pen than the one we were actually awarded,
The Fulltime whistle went with elation around the ground, it was a fantastic evening
for everyone involved in the club and also a great insight for all new players to play a
game under lights for the Frimmers, it's certainly no silent game of football that's for
sure. Line-up

NINETEEN upsets in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round and the revised draw for the
next stage...
Finally for many non-league sides, they played their first competitive match since
having their season halted in March, then deemed null and void, with some missing out
on promotion, playoffs and avoiding relegation.
Matches from the first qualifying round of the world’s oldest association football single
knockout competition went ahead over the last week, but with a difference. Due to
coronavirus lockdown rules, some ties were played behind closed doors or restricted
amount of spectators, though for some clubs, they had their biggest ever attendance.
There were astonishingly 19 upsets in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, and the
biggest surprise of those being Sawbridgeworth Town from level 9 knocking out Glenn
Tamplin’s Isthmian League outfit Romford with a 2-1 win. Kieran Amos popped up in
the last minute to score the Essex Senior League side’s winner.

A few words for the fans…
I am delighted to be here as Westfield Manager and I am extremely excited about our
future. This is the start of the long road to success and the guys that get aboard the
bus now will have the extra satisfaction of knowing they helped to build it from the
very start. Please be patient with them this season, nothing worth having in life
comes easy and there will be the normal ups and downs of football to navigate. We
will help raise some fine footballers here to represent this club with pride and success
will hopefully be around the corner for us.
Thank you for all your support, it really means a great deal to the Squad.
Enjoy your football! Simon
In your opinion who are the best footballing team of our generation and would you
draw any comparisons with what you intend to do with The Field?
Tough one... you can’t look beyond Pep's Barca team and closer to home what Pep
and Jurgen Klopp have done to raise the levels in the premier league has been fan-
tastic. I would love to say West Ham but I want to keep some credibility around
here.... It would be wrong to draw comparisons in a way as no non league team could
compare. However, my teams do, and will have certain traits. one of them is having a
real football identity and it is something all good teams should have in my opinion.

SIMON LANE - The task ahead
We caught up with new manager Simon Lane to find out
more about our new manager and what fans can expect to
see from his side this season.
Hello Simon, how does it feel to be manager of Westfield
Football Club and are you ready to manage the high
expectations built up over previous seasons?
It feels very positive, everyone has been extremely welcoming
and I'm already building up some good relationships with
people. This is an important aspect in any club. With regards
to expectations, none could be higher than my own, but the
main thing is there is a very real acknowledgement during
these strange times of the challenges this year poses, and the
size and length of the rebuilding task ahead.
Having not previously been at the club, how do you find your first impressions of
the Club and its set-up at this level?
I'm really enjoying it, it feels like home already which is a great sign this early and
the recent rallying around of everyone, in preparation for supporters for the big
game against Woking, was a great example of us all working together successfully.
How do you see your previous coaching and scouting experience being helpful in
the forthcoming season?
It’s been and will be, absolutely essential. New managers may struggle with this
kind of scenario where a complete or partial rebuild is required. Just to get a team
together, whether cohesive or not is hard enough without extensive contacts and
knowledge of players, so yes being a little bit longer in the tooth really helps. I
have also done lots of favours in the past and I’m a strong believer in that if you
treat people properly it comes back around to help you, so I'm indebted to the
many managers i know who have helped me in this and previous rebuilds.
Who are you looking forward to seeing most out of our new signings for
this season?
Well, as we have an absolute complete rebuild with only one player - Carl Bower
remaining, I'm looking forward to seeing how this very young group comes
together. Every one of them. It's going to need lots of patience (none more than
myself) and there will be highs and lows as with any young team, but the signs are
good in that they clearly want to learn and they are working extremely hard for the
club already. There are also very understanding of the finances currently for a
group so young.
What vision do you have for the football your team will play at Westfield?
We will have a very clear identity, it is something we have spoken about a lot. We
have a good smattering of local boys too who will grow to love the club. There will
be key aspects that we will aim to specialise in and what I can promise is that this
group will fight hard every game to represent this club well, home and away.
Where do you see the club in 2-3 years’ time and what do you see us having won?
Crystal Balls aren't my speciality, but after the big rebuild, it would be great if our
young squad can stay together and grow to make this club a force in this league
again firstly and hopefully progress to Step 3 at some point.

THE RANDOM NEWS PAGE
The FA has been in touch (Thursday 10th) to clarify that our football can continue, so
long as we
follow government advice and FA guidance. Their statement is below:
The UK Government has confirmed that organised sports, which include Steps 3-6 of
the National League System [NLS], Tiers 3-6 of the Women’s Football Pyramid
[WFP] and outdoor grassroots football, can continue as an exemption to its latest
planned measures in response to Covid-19.
Organised football activity is currently permitted at these levels but it is extremely
important that clubs, players, coaches, match officials, league officials, volunteers,
parents, carers, and facility providers continue to strictly follow both the UK
Governments’ latest guidance on Covid-19 and respective bespoke guidelines from
The Football Association [The FA].
Re-starting the game at these levels has been a significant challenge for everyone
involved and we must acknowledge the hard work, passion and commitment of the
football family. However, it is vital that we all adhere to these guidelines and ensure
it can continue in a safe and secure way.
As part of this exemption, The FA can also clarify that clubs at Steps 3-6 of the NLS
and Tiers 3-4 of the WFP remain permitted to accommodate a phased and limited
return of spectators if they follow the UK Governments’ latest guidance on Covid-19
and The FA’s guidelines for the NLS or WFP.
Supporters are the life force of our national sport and The FA hopes to see them
return in greater numbers across the country as soon as it is safe and possible.
However, we must continue to work together and play our part by following all the
relevant guidelines if this is to become a reality.
The FA remains in consultation with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media &
Sport, the Sports Grounds Safety Authority, leagues and competitions and will
provide an update on the further returns of supporters – including scheduled pilot
events – in due course.
A warm welcome to

NEW LEAGUE SPONSORS 2020-21
INTRODUCING ‘PITCHING IN’ – THE NEW PARTNER OF THE ISTHMIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
GVC is delighted to announce that the new sponsor of the, Isthmian, Northern
Premier and Southern Leagues - is Pitching In.
Pitching In, is a new Grassroots Sports Investment Programme that has today been launched by GVC, the multi-national sports-betting and gaming group
which owns Ladbrokes and Coral.
The partnership covers all three leagues that make up Steps 3 & 4 of the National Leagues System, who market themselves collectively
as the Trident Leagues.
England footballing legend Stuart Pearce, who played for Wealdstone FC for five years at the start of his long and illustrious career, has been appointed as
the official Pitching In ambassador.
Stuart Pearce, ambassador for the Pitching In programme, says:
“I am delighted to be taking up the role of ambassador for Pitching In, as I’m passionate about the importance of investing in grassroots sports and in
developing young talent. I started out playing for Wealdstone FC before joining Coventry City so I understand how important funding is to the non-league
game. Grassroots football is facing huge challenges at the moment and many clubs are struggling to stay afloat. GVC’s Pitching In investment will help make
a big difference to hundreds of clubs and thousands of players across the country.”
Pitching In has been set up with the objective of supporting, protecting and
encouraging grassroots sports in the UK through a range of initiatives.
In addition to financial support, a key focus of the partnership will be to facilitate and encourage members of the community to become volunteers,
and do some pitching in of their own. A Pitching In volunteering scheme will be established to link GVC’s Ladbrokes and Coral shop colleagues
with their local clubs.
In the weeks ahead Pitching In and the Trident Leagues will be announcing further initiatives to provide financial support and opportunities
for all the 226 clubs (rising to 240 in 2021).
For more information on Pitching In please visit www.gvc-plc.com/pitchingin
So, where were we?
It’s been six long months since the 2019/20 season came to an end which saw most
Non-League clubs have their campaigns abandoned with roughly half a dozen
weeks remaining.
Football is on its way back thick and fast now with the preliminary round of the FA
Cup taking place today while some leagues are already several fixtures in.
Steps 3 and 4 get underway next weekend (19th) while the National League will
begin on October 3.
There has never been a more challenging time for Non-League clubs and their
volunteers, having to implement important Covid-19 regulations and adapt
financially.
We’ve seen over pre-season how well clubs have managed the situation and it is
crucial football, particularly Non-League, can continue to prove it is capable of
staging matches safely.
At the time of writing, the National League is still waiting for the green light to
admit fans – it is thought they will be allowed to in time for the season’s start.
Below Steps 1 and 2, clubs can allow up to 30 per cent of ground grading capacity
at the level.
For most teams, this isn’t an issue but league chiefs at Steps 3 and 4 are pushing for
the limit to be changed to 30 per cent of ground capacity to benefit the more well-
supported clubs.
At this stage, the season getting underway, fingers crossed, won’t be too much of
an issue. Bigger problems, perhaps, lie in wait should we experience a second wave
of the virus or local areas go into lockdown.
The way this year is going, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a disastrous spell of
weather over the winter too!
Only time will tell as to whether Non-League will have to deal with those challenges
but for now we should enjoy being back to what we enjoy most, even if the
environment has changed somewhat.
Thank you to our loyal readers for supporting The Non-League Paper throughout
the summer!
Even though football came to a halt, we continued to make sure the paper was still
on newsstands every Sunday and Monday morning throughout the summer.
We interviewed the likes of Chris Wilder, Les Ferdinand, Stuart Peace and Chris
Waddle while doing our best to keep you updated on the latest news – as we have
done for the last 20 years!
We’re massively grateful to all the players, managers, clubs, leagues and everyone
else for answering their phones to talk to us!
But, crucially, we wouldn’t have been able to do it without the backing of our
readers – thank you!
The Non-League Paper is on sale every Sunday and Monday featuring match action,
fixtures, results and tables from Steps 1-7
