Halswell residents are concerned a lack of pedestrian accessibility could cause major safety issues in the area.

Plans for pedestrian crossings on Halswell Junction Rd, Nicholls Rd and State Highway 75 have been proposed by the city council.

But residents say they have “no confidence” the plans put in place would go ahead, after no response from the city council.

Halswell Residents’ Association chairman David Hawke said he first noticed the issue after plans for a pedestrian refuge on Halswell Junction Rd seemed to have stalled.

“The three main issues the association is worried about are Halswell Junction Rd, Nicholls Rd and State Highway 75.”

“There was a one page report given to Riccarton-Wigram Community Board which we we’re shown but it didn’t really give us any confidence anything would happen,” he said.

Government funding has been allocated for the city’s new major cycle routes, including one in Riccarton.

Last week Tansport Minister Simon Bridges announced the first round of funding from the Government’s Urban Cycleway Fund would include an al-location for sections of two major cycle routes to be built this year.

The fund allocates $500,000 towards the 400m Matai St East section of the Uni-Cycle route.

The work will also see improvements made to the Fendalton Rd, Harper Rd and Deans Ave intersection as well as a signalised Cycle Crossing of Deans Ave at Matai St.

The New Zealand Land Transport Fund is contributing $550,000, leaving $550,000 for the city council to complete the project.

The Papanui Parallel has also been allocated funds, with $250,000 going to-wards a section passing through Rutland Reserve.

A shared pedestrian and cycle path would link Grassmere Rd to Rutland St.

NZLTF was allocating $250,000, leav-ing $250,000 for the city council.

Infrastructure, transport and environ-ment committee chairman Phil Clearwa-ter said the sections selected for funding were parts of routes the city council confirmed last week as being the first priority to be built.

“[The] announcement is a welcome endorsement by the Government of our approach to improving travel options in our city.

“It gives the city council and the many people who have supported the Major

Cycle Routes network confidence to push ahead with these projects.

“It also provides some assurance that there are funding avenues available for the programme that recognise the wider benefits of increased cycling rates. It makes it clear that the full investment in the routes does not have to be met by local ratepayers,” he said.

Cr Clearwater said the city council agreed the first four routes to be built as well as adopting in principle a detailed design guide to show how the 13 routes will be built to provide a facility that will lead to more people cycling by providing a much improved level of safety.

“We have asked staff to provide more information on the costs and benefits so we can consider that and include it for discussion with the community during development of the Long Term Plan 2015-25,” he said.

The first four routes the city council will build are:

• Uni-Cycle: The link from Canterbury University to the central city through Hagley Park.

• Papanui Parallel: Connecting North-lands and the Northern Rail route to the central city.

• Quarryman’s Trail: The link between Halswell, Hoon Hay and Somerfield to the Southern Lights route which con-nects the southern suburbs around Beckenham to the central city.

• Rapanui − Shag Rock Cycleway: From the Coastal Pathway at Ferrymead to the central city.

The city council will begin consultation on some further routes in coming weeks.

A FAREWELL TO OUR “AMOS”

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Just prior to Christmas, we tragically lost our beautiful 11 year old Abbysinnian cat Amos. We arrived home from an awesome evening out with our staff to find him dead on our driveway. We suspected he had collided with a car, although he never leaves our section, except to keep an eye on our 12 month old cat Spartacus, who is a frequent visitor to the Canterbury University pigeon enclosure. Amos would sit at our letterbox and wait for Spartacus to cross the road safely, then Amos would chase him up our drive, basically telling him off.

On arriving home we found Spartacus stuck up our neighbours cabbage tree and Lola hiding in her kennel. They were both freaked out and very upset.

Nothing can prepare you for the sorrow and grief you feel on the loss of a treasured, valued, loved member of your family. It has been 12 years since I lost my faithful, awesome dog Tobias and 2 years since Eli our cat was put to sleep. Spartacus spent days calling and looking for Amos, lying on everything that had Amos’s smell on it. Our two teenage sons still cant talk about Amos and Isaac our 10 year old spent a lot of time very upset questioning why!

Amos was a battler. He successfully kept every cat off our section, despite his disability in having an entire hind paw amputated. We suspected as a tiny kitten he contracted Toxoplasmosis which caused hindleg paralysis, forcing me to amputate his left hind paw. This never slowed him up. Other various injuries included a severely fractured pelvis causing osteoarthritis, numerous cat fight wounds from protecting Spartacus and his territory and a near drowning.

He absolutely loved our family. He followed Steve around everywhere watching him mow lawns, hit balls on the court with the kids, cook in the kitchen and lie on Steve at night getting hours of chin scratches. He would hop onto a chariot designed for him especially and the boys would carry him into their rooms. Isaac spent hours in his basket reading or chatting to him. At night Spartacus and Amos would curl up together, after fastidiously grooming each other. Even Lola would try to get in on the fun. It would be fair to say he slept a

lot….he followed the sun around each room and the only thing that got him running was food!! Amos had a ravenous appetite, never turned food down and every food was his favourite. We loved him for that.

Where ever he is I know he’s looking after us all. A month on, it still hurts to talk about him. We look at heaps of photos and pour heaps of love into Spartacus, who even though we know he loves us, he really needs a feline companion around. Another cat to keep him in line, guard the section (as Spartacus isn’t that brave) and a play mate. Through a stroke of luck we may end up getting a relative of Amos’s, Piper. Piper is Amos’s ¾ brother and miraculously looks identical to our boy. We are excited to meet Piper and hopefully it will all work out. Will keep you posted.

▌▌ IN BRIEF

School evacuatedGilberthorpes School was evacu-ated last week following a large fire in a paddock which backed onto the school. Hornby Primary School was also evacuated. Fire region com-mander Dave Stackhouse said about 20 hectares of rural land was scorched and more than 40 homes were threat-ened by the fire.

Road closureMuirson Ave will be closed between McBeath St and Hoon Hay Rd until the end of February due to wastewater repairs. City Care replaced the waste-water main in Muirson Avenue in late 2012 but inspection work had shown that further work was required.

Overpass work startsWork is starting on the link between Wigram Rd and Magdala Place/Bir-mingham Drive.  This involves build-ing an overpass over Curletts Rd and aims to improve the cycle path facility that links Barrington Rd with Junction Rd. Work began this month and was aimed to be completed by April. The whole project would not be completed until November 2016.

Fitness service A free fitness service in Upper Ric-carton is back for the year. The free boot camp, held by the New Zealand Institute of Sport, runs every Tuesday on 66B Wharenui Rd from 1- 2pm. It aims to offer fitness sessions for all levels.

A decision to remove no stop-ping restrictions on Pound Rd has caused a stir.

Despite concerns about luring boy racers back to the area, the city council plans to remove the signage from the road.

City council staff said the night time no stopping restric-tions which were previously in place were now redundant.

This was because the Prohibit-ed Times on Roads bylaw, which restricted night time access, was placed on the rural road in September last year.

It meant cars weighing less than 3500 kgs were prohibited from entering areas of Pound Rd during certain hours on certain nights.

But Riccarton-Wigram Com-munity Board chairman Mike Mora said he was frustrated his board had not been consulted on the issue.

“We’re going to be talking to city council staff about that - we’re not happy with this one,” he said.

He said completely removing the no stopping restriction will only attract unwanted visitors

back to the rural road.Mr Mora had concerns over

the behaviour of some of the drivers who has previously con-gregated in the area.

“Pouring diesel all over the road is definitely a safety issue,” he said.

Riccarton-Wigram deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said she was disappointed the board had not been briefed on the decision.

“I personally would rather we kept in the current restrictions - as they work. Our area was the first in the city to need this

constraint,” she said. The decision to revoke the no

stopping restrictions was made at the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board’s meeting last week.

In a report to the community board, city council traffic en-gineer Ryan Rolston said since access to the relevant section of Pound Rd was now restricted at night, it was “desirable” to remove the prior no stopping signage.

“This implies a legitimacy of access that does not exist for some users,” he said.

Board upset with road move

St Michael’s Church School welcomed in the new school year with a Powhiri to greet new principal Mr Marshall Diggs and all other newcomers. Pupils and families assembled on the school green where a haka, a speech of welcome and a hongi took place. The mornings events were concluded with Mass officiated by Bishop Victoria Mat-thews in St. Michael’s and All Angels Church. St Michael’s is the oldest estab-lished primary school in Christchurch, founded in 1851 in a small wooden cot-tage on the banks of the Avon River.

So Brenda, tell me a bit about yourself.

Well, I’m 46 and I have a whanau. My husband and I have been together for 22 years, and married for 15. We have eight children. Not all of them are ours – we have a bit of a blended whanau. My husband, Wairangi, works here at He Waka Tapu with me. He’s an alcohol and drug assessor and I am a whanau intervention assessor.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in Timaru. We’ve only sort of come up here to Christchurch in the last five years. My husband wanted to complete his degree in alcohol and drug studies up here. He has finished it now and we live in Papanui.

You have more than 4500 supporters on your Ka Pai Me Facebook page. How did that start?

Well, I’ve always had a weight problem from the get-go, from when I was very young. The Facebook page happened in August last year. Things were

pretty tough for me and I was really wanting to make a change and didn’t know how. My work colleagues and I were trying to nut out something I could do. I was a bit resistant at first thinking about how it would go and how I would feel, blah de blah, but the page was set up and away I went. I post on it every day of how I’m going.

How did you feel about the support you received on the page?

In the beginning there were about five or 600 following and I was like ‘mean’. Then it started growing and growing and it got steady support building. From the time that I’ve had the page, I’ve had no negative comments.

Have you heard of other people following in your footsteps?

There are lots of people going on their own journeys. A lot of them private messaged me in the background because they didn’t want friends or whanau to know. There were maybe about 50 who have started their own journey. We all motivate each other and that sort of thing keeps me going and it’s that accountability. I really enjoy it and it’s quite therapeutic.

Can you tell me a bit about your 700-day health and fitness plan?

A 700-day journey of hardIn August, Brenda Warren was 199kg. She has a goal to lose 100kg during a 700-day health and fitness plan, and will take part in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate event next month. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to her about the journey, her training and the biggest challenges she has faced.

GETTING FIT: Brenda Warren performs at the kapa haka regionals in April last year before she began her health and fitness plan.

I am on day 165, it’s going really well. I see Daniel, the nutrition-ist here at He Waka Tapu, once a week and we look at food menus and exercise programmes and set goals. Then on Fridays we have the weigh-in. I do the exercise on my own.

Was it difficult to get motivated?

In the beginning I was ready. I did a 10-day count down before I started and that helped. I got to say goodbye to some of the foods that I love like Chinese, KFC, chocolate, fizzy and chocolate eclairs. Having that last pig-out and saying that’s it, no more helped me prepare myself for what I was going to do.

Had you tried anything like this before?

I’m a queen of lots of things. I’ve tried every single diet, pills and potions. I’ve tried Atkins, Sure Slim. They all work, but if you don’t have the head stuff straight it is hard. I did lose 50kg about three or four years ago but my head space was not in it. This time I’ve been able to put it out there. I was a bit shy but now I don’t care. There will be a lot of people feel-ing the same.

What prompted you to do it?My husband and I were talking

about how I had never tried hyp-nosis and it planted the seed again. There was a combination of things and I was ready to do it. I went to social media and I haven’t looked back really.

How is it going? I hear you have made some great progress.

Progress is going really well, you have some good weeks and some not so good weeks and it’s just working through them and I get to verbalise them as well. There was one week that I had 4kg put on and I was like ‘how did that happen’ but we worked through it and that’s what I do every week. It’s also learning about your body really. I’m 46-years-old and I’m still learning.

So do you have a target weight?I would love to get under 100kg.

I haven’t been that since I was in high school. I’m determined, no more, I’m not going to go back again, it’s too hard to start again

and I’ve done it countless times. If you don’t mind me asking,

what was your starting weight and where are you sitting now?

I started out at 199.5kg and I’m down to 172.1kg. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m getting there. I’m getting close to losing 30kg, I’m at 27.4kg now.

And I hear you are in training for the City2Surf next month, how is that going?

I am trying to do something every day, an 8.2km walk has been the biggest so far. We did a walk recently with about 35 friends, whanau and supporters from the page. Some went for a 3.2km walk and some others went for a 5km. We’re trying to do it every week before the City2Surf to prepare. I’m doing some swimming and

aqua zumba in the mornings so I’m up at 5.30am. I did the 6km last year when I was on a semi-diet but I struggled. But this year I am way fitter than what I was and will try the 14km.

What was the focus for you when you started the plan?

The focus for me was getting the kai right. We work on the food first, the exercise will come once you get in the buzz. I just started aqua-jogging three days a week. I’m a bit of an addict now, we just shake our booties and shake our wobbly bits and no-one cares.

Do you have goals or rewards along the way?

Every 10kg I lose, I give myself a reward. The first 20kg I lost I got my eyelashes done. When I get to 30kg I’m going to get my hair done. Usually my husband does it, he’s not the best hairdresser but I love him.

What advice would you give others who are wanting to do the same as you?

I think what they need to do is sit down and think about what they really want to do. If you don’t have that head space right you’re setting yourself up to fail. It’s baby steps and the 10-day count down is a good idea because they will truly understand what they are going to endeavour. The secret is having great support, even at work here we’re quite fit and healthy conscious. We feed off each other and they are amazing. I’m very blessed.

FC TWENTY11 football development manager Mario Hofmann is looking forward to his first winter season at the club.

Hofmann plays for Canterbury United and was formerly the grassroots manager at Wynrs, Wynton Rufer’s football academy programme in Auckland.

He has a wealth of experience coaching and working with kids and junior coaches, working and coaching in schools, and delivering

programmes for grassroots and elite junior players.

As a player, Hofmann represented New Zealand at under-17 level and played in Oceania (Tahiti) and Confederation Cup (Korea) tournaments while also serving secondary school football scholarships in Germany and Japan.

He also had stints in Germany with clubs Bentwisch F.S.V and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern E.V and in Japan with J League Club

Kyoto Sanga FC.He has played for several

Northern Premier League clubs in Auckland including Central United, Auckland City National Youth League team and East Coast Bays before joining Canterbury United for the current ASB Premiership season.

He signed up as FC Twenty 11’s development manager in September and is about to start his first winter season in the role.

The striker is generating plenty of fans in the junior grades with his summer coaching sessions and more young people will benefit from his experience, skills and passion for the game.

He is delivering the club’s football programme this season which includes the first kicks and fun football programme, junior coaching and coach education sessions and holiday programmes this winter.

“It’s a major issue for people to get across State Highway 75 near Oaklands School and it’s still a pretty major issue at School Rd.”

“There is a 40km con-trolled crossing there but it doesn’t apply out of school hours. There needs to be more.”

“The way we see it is the ability and need for peo-ple to move has not really caught up to the increased traffic into the area,” he said.

City council unit manager of transport and city streets Richard Topham said a maintenance contractor would be undertaking work to install kerb build-outs and a central pedestrian refuge island outside 65/67 Halswell Junction Rd.

“Physical works will com-mence early to mid next week,” he said.

Mr Hake said there needed to be a larger focus around how pedestrians and cyclists could move around.

“At the moment we’ve just highlighted the issue. We in-tend next to make our own suggestion,” he said.

GRASSROOTS SPORTMedals aplenty at rowing champsBy Kyle KnowlesWest Christchurch high schools had a golden South Island Rowing Championships last week.

Villa Maria College and St Thomas of Canterbury College won seven medals between them with three gold.

Villa’s two gold medals went to the under-15 double scullers Kath-ryn Glen and Samantha Coulthard and the novice coxed quad scull crew of Milly Young, Virginia Ho-gan, Phoebe Wynands, Phoebe Mc-Crossin and Georgia Reekie (cox).

The under-17 coxed eight won bronze and the under-15 coxed

quad scull won silver.St Thomas’ sole gold medal went

to the under-17 double scull pair-ing of Alex Coulthard and Jake Mangels.

The school also won a silver and a bronze with the under-19 double scull partners Isaac Robertson and Hugo Moffet. Robertson won the bronze in the single scull.

Other Christchurch schools also pulled in a massive number of medals.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, St Mar-garet’s College, Christchurch Girls’ High School and St Andrew’s Col-lege had the largest medal tallies

winning 30 between them.Rangi Ruru and St Andrew’s each

came home from Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel with eight crews winning medals.

St Andrew’s could only manage one gold medal in their haul which went to the novice coxed eight. They picked up three more silver medals and four bronze.

The Rangi Ruru team won only the one gold too which could have easily been many more after finish-ing runner-up in seven other races.

The gold medal boat was the un-der-15 coxed eight.

St Margaret’s won one less medal than St Andrew’s and Rangi Ruru but came away with a raft of gold medals.

Five crews won gold. They were the under-19, under-16 and un-der-15 coxed four and the under-17 and 19 coxed eights.

Girls’ High won seven medals four of which were gold.

Christs’ College and Christch-urch Boys High School each won six medals with half of them being gold.

St Bede’s College won four med-als while Burnside High School and Avonside Girls’ High School picked up the one medal each.

All the silverware that was won at this regatta was good preparation for the South Island Secondary School Championships in early March and the Maadi Cup at the end of March to be held at Lake Karapiro.

GOLDEN GIRLS: Villa Maria rowing coach Megan Laas with under-15 dou-ble scull champions Kathryn Glen, Samantha Coulthard.

SECOND BEST: Hugo Moffett and Isaac Robertson won silver in the un-der-19 double sculls. PHOTO: HEIDI JONES

NOT SO NOVICE: Megan Laas (coach), Milly Young, Virginia Hogan, Phoebe Wynands, Phoebe Mc-Crossin and Georgia Reekie who won the novice coxed quad scull.

FRIENDLY RIVALRY: Nick Oakley, 20, of Hororata and Alex McCaw, 22, of Halswell, were first and second in the Standard Class at the New Zealand National Gliding Championships held earlier this year. The competi-tion, held at Omarama over two weeks pitted seasoned experienced pilots against Mr McCaw, and fellow youth competitor Nick Oakley. The two pilots gave the rest a run for their money with Mr Oakley gaining first placing ahead of Mr McCaw. The competition served as a warm up to the World Junior (under 25) Com-petition to be held in Australia in December this year. Mr McCaw is the cousin of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw.

Christchurch Boys’ High School student Ben Ashby and Kate Hellings from St Margaret’s College will star in The Anthony Harper Summer Theatre Season show Peter Pan.

Ben, 17, of St Albans will star as Peter Pan and Kate, 17, of Redcliffs will play his counter-part Wendy.

The show, held at Riccarton House, is part of Christchurch City Council’s SummerTimes programme and runs until Feb-ruary 22.

Tinker Bell, Captain Hook and the Lost Boys are played by other members of The Court Youth Company alongside three professional actors – Vanessa Kumar who finished her profes-sional actor’s training at Toi Whakaari in Wellington last year; Andrew Ford, a former Christchurch resident now based in Auckland; and Derek Flores, a Canadian improvisational actor who has made his home in Christchurch.

The Court Youth Company is selected from the top talent in the city amongst 17-21-year-olds and have worked with and received training at The Court over the last year.

Behind the scenes is a team from The Court Theatre includ-ing director Daniel Pengelly,

costume designer Aimee Reed, set and props designer Oliver Morse, stage manager Alice Par-doe and operator Alex Le Cocq.

City council events produc-tion team manager Chloe Dear said the actors made up their own version of the Peter Pan story.

Improvisation was used in de-veloping the play so the actors could engage with the themes of the theatrical production rather than reciting lines.

The show runs between Wednesday and Sunday at 7pm, with an additional 2pm show on weekends.

Street parking is available or limited car parking is available at the Riccarton Bush car park.

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT

The last couple of years has seen some quite alarming incidents oc-curring amongst dry grass acceler-ated by howling Nor’Westers.

Once again on Wednesday thir-teen fire appliances assisted by both the Airport Crash Fire team and contractors operating nearby, who struggled to stop a very wide-front-ed grass fire that raced on to the ur-ban rural interface at Hei Hei.

One house has been reported completely lost, another partially destroyed and cars motor cycles, garages and other property consumed.

We are still in early February so can probably expect more to come.

In the same general area the pre-vious Thursday saw an unusual, but not unheard of, cause of fire.

In the early few years of the new century the provision of an appli-ance garage in a new kitchen was commonplace.

These fixtures are a small alcove in the kitchen joinery with a power point and a wee roller door that are designed mainly for the keeping of toasters out of sight.

The problem is that if the toaster is left plugged in with the switch on the closing of the roller can, as it did last week, push the toaster switch to the on position and then prevent it popping up.

This keeps the element on and af-ter some time the garage, then the kitchen will ignite.

An alarming series of incidents BY MEGAN GATTEY

St Andrew’s College has revealed plans for its new Memorial Cha-pel designed to replace the original building, which was demolished in 2013 following quake damage.

The design, by New Zealand In-stitute of Architects gold medal-winning architect Patrick Clifford, was finalised after the college or-ganised meetings and a survey of its school community. They prioritised “spiritual feel”, tradition and capac-ity as the top three prerequisites for the design.

The school has chosen to incor-porate as many remnants of the original chapel as possible, which Mr Clifford said was “an interesting challenge”.

He integrated the original stone, oak doors, stained glass windows, ceremonial chairs, gargoyles, the baptismal font, the bell, the com-munion table and around 2000 bricks into the forward-looking de-sign.

The chapel will be built to hold 700 people. People will be able to buy a brick for $3000 and have their name recorded on a plaque within the new chapel.

“The congregation faces toward the school, supporting the idea that the chapel is at the heart of the school,” Mr Clifford said.

Students are also able to look back [towards the street] and be mindful of their place in the community.”

Mr Clifford said that the project has been a “real pleasure” to be a part of.

“The chapel will be a fantastic

new build. We’ve really missed our chapel since the February 2011 earthquake,” said the college’s gen-eral manager David Evans.

February 22 will hold even more significance for St Andrew’s – it is the day that the earthquake-proof-ing for the chapel foundation work is expected to be complete.

Earthquake-proofing is vital for ensuring the building’s safety, Mr Evans said. “There will be stone col-umns under the ground to prevent lateral spread as the land for the chapel is next to the stream,” he said.

St Andrew’s has started ground improvement work for the new chapel and gymnasium, both on 12-month building plans. Concrete was laid on the gymnasium site on February 4.

The gymnasium is expected to open November 2015, and the cha-pel in March 2016.w

School donates to charity

St Michael’s Church School staff have started off the year giving donations to a charity of items they have built them-selves.

As part of a team building exercise, staff were challenged to construct toys donated

by Toyworld Tower Junction Christchurch.

The only catch - they had to do it while cable-tied together, and within a timeframe of one hour.

The staff completed the toys, including a kitchenette and

tricycle with barrow, which were then donated to Ronald McDonald House South Is-land.

South Island house manager Zucchi Leonard thanked the team for their charitable ef-forts.

“The toys are being put to good use already,” he said.

St Michael’s is the oldest established primary school in Christchurch, founded in 1851 in a small wooden cottage on the banks of the Avon River.

Plans to make street safer receive go aheadPeople concerned about a lack of visibility when exiting Homer-sham Place may soon feel a lot safer.

Residents and businesses say they have no way of seeing oncoming traffic when entering and exiting the Burnside cul-de-sac because of parked cars blocking their view.

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board approved the installation of no stopping restrictions at the intersection of Homersham Place and Roydvale Avenue at its meeting last week.

Homersham Ltd customer service representative Viv Cudby, who works in the area said restrictions had been needed for a long time.

“The cars park both sides of the road right up to the corner so you cannot see whats coming. You have to pull almost into the middle of the road to be able to see whats coming.

“If I’m trying to turn right into Roydvale Ave in peak traffic it’s quite scary,” she said.

Community board chairwom-an Val Carter said requests of this nature were becoming more frequent.

“The cars can’t seem to get out of roads. When people park on the corners of these sorts of roads it makes it very hard to see,” she said.

FOOD

Jam packed

A little lime zest added to strawberry jam gives it a subtle and fresh flavour. It’s a favourite on freshly baked scones. Or spoon it over thin crepes with a little creme fraiche, and it’s just as delicious on toast and bagels. Or what about a Swiss roll?

Ingredients1½ kgs nectarines, ripe 1 cup water 1 vanilla pod 2 tbsp fresh lime juice, or use lemon juice 1½ kgs raw sugar

Directions

Using the point of a sharp paring knife, score each nectarine. Place the fruit in a bowl then cover with boiling water and leave for 15 minutes.

Peel the fruit, discard the skin and stones then roughly chop the flesh.

Put the fruit in a heavy-based

saucepan or preserving pan. Add the water. Slit the vanilla pod and scrape the seeds into the pan. Add the pod along with the lime or lemon juice and the sugar.

Stir to combine then bring to a boil and stir while cooking, for 45 minutes. Ladle into hot, sterilised jars.

Homemade jam makes a lovely gift. If you can’t find jam-setting sugar, normal sugar is fine – your jam will just need to cook a little longer. Always test a little on a saucer to ensure you get that perfect consistency.

Strawberry and lime jam Makes 3 cups

Nectarine and vanilla jam Makes 4 x 250ml

Ingredients500 g strawberries, hulled and cut in half 500 g jam-setting sugar ½ lime, zested 1 tbsp butter

DirectionsPlace the strawberries, sugar and

lime zest in a heavy saucepan. Slowly bring to a simmer, stirring continuously over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.

Then bring it to a boil. Contin-ue to boil for 8-10 minutes.

Place a little on a saucer and if it is sticky and starting to set, remove it from the heat. If not, continue to boil for a further few minutes.

Remove from heat, stir through butter until melted. Pour the jam into sterilised jars and seal.

Rebecca Cragnolini, who is an NLP practitioner and self hypnosis coach, explains that we are sensory beings which means that

we experience the world through what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell.

As we develop, we learn to use language to describe these sensory experiences and we continue to use sensory-based language for other activities and events. For example, “I can see what you’re saying”, or “we’ll touch on that later”. Rebecca points out that we describe other people in a sensory way, too. They may be bright or a colourful character,

Language of change

When you really take the time to listen to people speaking, it’s fascinating to see how we use language.

or very grounded or even in touch with what’s going on.

When it comes to describing problems, we, too, use sensory language. For example, “I feel so stuck”; “I can’t see a way forward”; “It stinks”, or “I’m trying to shake it off but still feel bitter”. Understanding this can be a powerful tool when it comes to making changes. Rebecca says that it’s important to know how we use sensory language as clues not only to what the problem is but also the solution.

Our minds respond well to symbols, images, sounds and feelings. Last month

Rebecca talked about the power of our imagination. Building on that, she explains that when we combine imagination with sensory language, it gives our mind a clear direction of what it’s aiming for. By being aware of how we describe the issue or change that we want, we create new images, sounds, feelings of what we would like.

She has two helpful tips if you are feeling stuck. Firstly, imagine what breaking free would be like, focusing on what you see, hear, feel and maybe taste and smell. Then imagine yourself striding forward with the solution and experience what it’s like to

look back and take what you have learnt. Another tip is to imagine your problem

written on postix stuck on you and then shaken off, ripped up and left to blow or be washed away, leaving a sweet or refreshing taste.

For more information about groups and individual sessions to make the changes you’d like, visit www.re-mind.net.nz, email [email protected] or ring 021 163 8543.

Lindisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies,

and the preschool is licenced for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne.

Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner.

We pride ourselves on being a multi-cultural centre, both through the

nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff.

The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school.

The new themes have been available in-store in January and already have a strong vote of approval from parents booking parties.

New themes include Frozen, Circus, Ladybug and Monster Truck.

They all come with brilliant invitations that will look great on party guests’ fridges until party day.

And Frozen will not be out of place in our summer heat. All party rooms are air conditioned for your comfort.

Our traditional children’s favourite themes of Pirate, Princess, Dinosaur and Charlie Chipmunk are still available and in demand.

Early bookings are essential to ensure the theme of your choice.

In 2013, the government announced changes to the laws around child restraints. The changes require mandatory use of a child restraint for children up to 7 years

of age, and the use of an appropriate child restraint if there is one available until 8 years old. This new law came into effect on November 1, 2013.

This means that if your child aged between 5 and 7 years has moved to the vehicle seatbelt on their own, they will need to return to a booster seat.

Plunket and other child safety advocates continue to encourage booster seat use for

Privately run nursery school

Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.

Booster seats for childreneven longer, as research shows that until a child is around 148 centimetres tall, they need a booster seat to get the best protection in a crash.

Plunket is pleased to give advice to anyone unsure of their position regarding this change in legislation. They hire and sell all types of child restraints, including booster seats, and will install these in your vehicle free of charge. They also offer free advice and guidance so you can be sure you are giving your child the best protection when they travel in your vehicle.

A body of research already exists showing aerobic exercise improves brain function in older adults, but there is a limited amount of

literature on how it affects young adults. The Otago researchers, led by Department

of Psychology senior lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to test the oft-held belief that the brains of young adults in their prime might not benefit as much as older people from regular sustained exercise.

They took 52 tertiary students, aged

between 18 to 30, and put them through a series of cognitive tests on a computer while measuring oxygen availability in the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as their self-reported exercise frequency.

Dr Machado says their “surprising” findings, just published online in the journal Psychophysiology, show that both blood supply to the brain and cognitive functioning appear to benefit from regular exercise in young adults.

“This provides compelling evidence that

regular exercise, at least five days per week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive ability as young adults – challenging the assumption that living a sedentary lifestyle leads to problems only later in life,” she says.

The research also provides potential insight into understanding why people who regularly engage in aerobic exercise tend to function better on a cognitive level.

“I think the idea that young people do not have to worry about exercising since they are in their prime developmentally is rapidly being overturned by mounting evidence that even the brains of young adults can benefit from regular exercise,” she says.

“The exercise could involve brisk walking or more vigorous activity, and could be made up of a few 10-minute bouts of exercise,

rather than one single block of exercise,” she says.

The researchers also found that body mass index was not a key factor in how well the brain functioned, indicating that regular engagement in physical activity may be more important than body weight.

Dr Machado says she had noticed over the years that university students appeared progressively less fit.

“I wondered whether we might find significant relationships between exercise levels, oxygen availability in the brain and cognition in the young adults, but no studies had considered this in healthy young adults.”

These findings come at a time of increased scientific focus on links between exercise and cognitive health in older adults.

Regular physical activity improves brain function even in young adults considered in their prime and at the height of cognitive ability, according to a new University of Otago study.

Selling the DreamTravel posters dating from the early to mid-20th century on display at

Canterbury Museum were celebrated with an event on January 29. Selling the Dream showcases some of the most iconic images which were used to sell New Zealand to tourists as a magical place to visit – the world’s dream destination.

Designed by an army of talented artists, the posters represent a golden age in this country’s tourism industry which was aimed at both international as well as domestic travellers. The cocktail party held at the museum was an opportunity for invited guests to browse the works and commemorate the skill which created them.Beverley Bolland, Rod Syme
