Lyttelton Tunnel 50th anniversary

Christchurch celebrated half a century of quick and effi cient travel to Lyttelton on August 31. The offi cial ceremony to open the new tunnel

control building included speeches by local dignataries and a ribbon cutting.

Following the opening, the tunnel was closed to traffi c, affording pedestrians and cyclists a rare opportunity to walk through it.

Westburn School pupils Kaitlen Calder and Aardash Roy (left) won junior school best dressed at a Daffodil Day fundraiser at the school last week. The school raised just over $1000 for the Cancer Society at the fundraiser. The winners were presented with their prizes by representatives from the ANZ Bank in Upper Riccarton, who support the annual fundraiser. Best dressed in the middle school were Hellen Wang and Jorjia Cattermole (centre). Best dressed in the senior school were Jack Bishop and Tom Vincent.

Online abuse for couple•From page 1

Mr Robinson and Ms Watts were travelling to the West Coast on Friday for their wed-ding and were unable to talk to the Western News about the on-line abuse.

Mr Robinson’s mother Gina Blair said the negative feedback had been horrible.

“There were comments say-ing they were irresponsible and deserved what they got. It’s not fair when they don’t know their situation,” she said.

“You just feel so angry. You

just want to say something to them. It’s unbelieveable that people can say that.”

Ms Blair said one of the rea-sons there was no insurance was because the couple couldn’t afford it.

Ms Blair said there had also been messages of support on Facebook.

The fire started when a clothes dryer malfuntioned or overheated. The family were all at home when the fire started, but managed to escape.

Meanwhile, pupils at South Hornby School have banded to-

gether and raised $400 to sup-port the family.

Mr Robinson and Ms Watts’ children go to the school.

School principal Simon Moriarty said the pupils all wanted to do something for the family.

“A lot of the children know them well, so they have been personally involved in a lot of ways, even just organising with their parents things that they could donate. It was driven by the kids, because they want-ed to do something as a fund-raiser.”

ELECTIONDAY WHITE TAIL SPIDERS:

These spiders seem to be on the increase in Christchurch and a lot more of our calls are regarding them. Whilst they are not venomous the bacteria they carry can be devastating to people in poor health, especially liver, kidney, heart patients and diabetics. We don’t know why but their bites can have different effects on different people. The young and the elderly can be particularly susceptible. People with concerns should have their house treated inside and outside yearly.

ANTS:Ants are becoming more of a problem in Christchurch each year. Darwin Ants seem to be by far the most prominent but Argentine Ants and White Footed Ants are becoming more common. Darwin Ants can be identified by squashing some of them on your finger, and smelling it quickly, they have a pungent sweet smell. Their colonies can grow huge and can spread very quickly.

These insects have survived millennia and are a force to be reckoned with. If you have ants in your home take actions sooner rather than later as the problems can escalate very quickly. With ants cleanliness is godliness, keep benches

clean from food waste, rinse dirty dishes immediately, don’t leave scrap bins inside, get them out into a trolley bin. Keep the rubber seal around your dishwasher clean. Keep the shelves and your pantry clean, and keep pet bowls outside or wash after use. Keep your floor clean where animals are being fed. If you have a garbage disposal keep the trap outside clean as well.

It is better to treat the ants outside rather than inside.Fly spray and any pest control products that can be bought from a supermarket or shops may kill a few but are largely ineffective, you need professional help with licensed products.

For every ant you see on the surface there are approximately 2,500 in the colony. The colony can be a 200mm underground and cover a huge area. Incorrect treatment can make the colony divide into up to 4 new colonies and move a meter away from the original colony. And in some areas there are colonies every couple of metres.

Early control is very important but unfortunately you must realise they are now here to stay and are going to come back eventually.

Demolition of the Hornby clock-tower building started last week, but plans for the site are still under wraps.

Plans for a new building on the site are not yet finalised, but it is expected to be a single level building.

Building owner Epoch Christ-church director Dave Cresswell said the final decision to demol-ish the building was made about two months ago.

The building has remained empty since the 2011 earth-

quakes, when it was badly dam-aged.

It was originally built in the 1960s, but completely redesigned in 2010, and won a Canterbury Architecture Award for the new design.

Mr Cresswell said the new building was likely to look quite different, but the clock would be retained in the design.

The demolition of the building is expected to finish in Novem-ber, while plans for the new building are expected to be re-leased before the end of the year.

Clocktower to go; site plan secret

Just hours after being gifted a seismometer, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students were measuring their first earthquake.

On Tuesday the school was gifted a seismometer, by staff at University of Auckland.

The students barely felt the 3.2 magnitude earthquake that after-noon, but they saw it as a large spike on the screen.

Rangi Ruru principal Julie Moor said she hoped studying the science behind earthquakes would help the students to understand their own experiences.

“Studying gives people greater understanding, and if you have greater understanding it helps you deal with something traumatic like an earthquake in a much bet-ter way.”

She said it would allow the students to explore science in a hands-on way.

“It’s important that girls see sci-ence, in all its varieties, not only as a viable and exciting career op-tion but also as an essential part of our global future.”

She said the school would like to expand its science pro-grammes.

“With our new science facilities

now completed we are very keen to look at dynamic partnerships and programmes that will engage and excite our girls, and to also offer innovative pathways into tertiary sciences.”

The “Seismometers in Schools” programme is run by the Uni-versity of Auckland, supported by Boise State University of the United States.

The programme supplies a seis-mometer with computer, software

and full support for schools which are interested in developing their programmes.

About 50 seismometers have been placed in New Zealand, Australia and the US, and each “seismic station” is linked through an online network.

Rangi Ruru head of physics Keith Machin said the seismom-eter was an ideal vehicle for teach-ing physics, science and social sciences.

QUAKES ON SCREEN: Dr Kasper Van Wijk from the University of Auckland showed Rangi Ruru Girls’ School year 7 pupils how the school’s new seismometer recorded a recent earthquake in Taupo.

BY GABRIELLE STUART

Burnside High School students have been torturing their teach-ers – for a good cause.

To mark the annual Amnesty International Freedom Week, the students tied their teachers up in the school quad.

Student Daniel Coats said their aim was to help educate fel-low students about torture.

“It is difficult for students coming from New Zealand to understand these issues, but that’s what we’re trying to do, to raise awareness.”

He said that although the students were not likely to ex-perience torture themselves, that made it more important that they stand for those who couldn’t defend themselves.

“It’s important that we use that privilege, to speak out about these issues, because we won’t be imprisoned ourselves so we are able to do that.

“If we’re not doing anything about it, who will? Because people in the affected countries don’t have that freedom.”

He said his own involvement stemmed from his interest in history and politics in primary school.

“Just having some under-standing of what is actually go-ing on has encouraged me to have an active role.”

Teacher Michele Craw said

the group had worked hard to raise awareness of the issues.

She said that letters and peti-tions from the students would be sent through Amnesty In-ternational to governments of countries allowing torture to take place.

She believed the effort could have an impact.

“Research has shown even rogue governments care about their international reputation. They don’t like bad publicity.”

Torture for a good cause

EDUCATING: Burnside High School teacher Jenny May was tied up in the school quad during Amnesty International Freedom Week, to help raise awareness of issues around torture.

CAMPAIGNING: Student activists Natalija Petrovic and Daniel Coats organised several events around the school to show students how they could get involved in protests.

A REVIEW OF THE HOON HAY SCHOOL PRODUCTION, BY JUDITH CROSSLEY

A highlight of the social calen-dar returned last week when the Hoscars were handed out by the talented students at Hoon Hay School.

About 430 performers took to the stage to bring us a taste of Hollywood. For a couple of hours we were transported to the glitz and glamour of tinsel town.

We had guest appearances by Lady Googa, George Clueless, Brad Armpit, and Angelina Jolly, to name a few. The categories were, Best Special Effects, Best

Actress, Best Soundtrack, Best Director and finally Best Actor.

For the first award we saw Pirates of the Caribbean, with a swashbuckling sword fight and the heroes walking the plank, and a modern twist on Alice in Wonderland with the cast hip-hoping their way through the story. Annie was the winner for Best Actress. This rendition would not look out of place on any stage.

Best Soundtrack was next. In true Bollywood style we had dancing from Slumdog Million-aire and lots of lightning going on in Grease. For Best Director we were treated to a full kapa haka performance for the movie Whale Rider. I have not actu-

ally seen this movie myself but I need not see it now as the stu-dents told the full story on stage. Wonderful.

Lastly, we had the Best Actor award. Not surprisingly Taylor Gift won this for her work in Camp Rock, but there was one person who thought she was not deserving of the Hoscar. Kanye Best thought he was the best and did so, on stage. No one saw that coming.

For the finale, the entire school sang to us the new Hoon Hay song which told us the school motto. We were the first to hear this and it summed up the per-sistence and respect, responsibil-ity and curiosity that these chil-dren practice every day.

GLITZ: The cast of the Hoon Hay School production, including the Hoscar winners.

Hoon Hay School takes on HollywoodBEST ACTOR: Kanye Best trying to take Taylor Gift’s Hoscar.

BEST ACTRESS: Hard knocks for the orphans in Annie.

So what are your thoughts on being named a finalist for the award?

It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. Really, I see it as an acknowledgement of the amazing work of women in Canterbury, rather than of me as an individual.

So do you know any of the other final-ists?

Not personally, but I think we’ve all heard of people like  Beatrice Faumina and Kerry Prendergast – they’re stellar names.

How does it feel to have your name up beside theirs?

It’s pretty overwhelming. Obviously the people who nominated me believe I’m do-ing something good for the community, so it’s definitely an honour for many reasons.

So tell me about Women in the Rebuild, where did it start?

Basically I’m a business strategist, and as a mentor I saw women weren’t getting a fair shake. Post-earthquake Christchurch had become a very masculine economy, and I saw the frustration for women. It was a way to get women together, to show them that they’re not alone in business. And also to acknowledge that the things that are happening in the city are different to what people are dealing with anywhere else, because we are dealing with a post-disaster environment and it’s a changed economy.

Why do you think it has been so suc-cessful?

Because it meets their needs. We under-stand that the pressure is on for women because we – Rae, my fellow director, and myself – feel it ourselves. As often hap-pens in a post-disaster environment, a lot of women went home to take care of their children and their families, so they had to deal with the pressures of living on a single income on top of everything else. And if you’re running a business, you have a responsibility to staff members, so I know a lot of businesses have kept their doors open just because of the staff. It’s been a tough time for a lot of women.

Work doneBusinesswoman Michelle MacWilliam has been named a finalist in the Women of Influence awards, for her work as founder of Women in the Rebuild and in the Chinese community in the city. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about being caught in tsunami evacuations, the rebuild of Christchurch and what kept her inspired.

That’s something I’ve also seen through my work with the West Christchurch Women’s Refuge.

I’ve heard you also do a lot of work with the Chinese community in Christchurch.

Yes, I sit on executive committee of the New Zealand China Trade Association. I have a strong relationship with several groups working between the countries, and I’m involved in running functions for the advancement of trade. I have a lot of Chinese contacts that I work with, here. There are some huge issues, when you consider that there are over 20,000 Chinese in Christchurch alone.

So how did you get involved with the community?

I first got involved about five years ago, when I attended a function run by ANZ. There was a gentleman there run-ning Mandarin classes, and he wanted me to mentor him, so I did that. Eventually he asked me to become a business partner. In 2011, after the earthquake struck, he was summoned back to China, so I brought out his part of the business, and I’ve been run-ning it since.

So have you been to China? No, I haven’t.Is it on the bucket list?Of course. It’s actually the biggest joke

among the Chinese community, that I do so much for them yet I have never actually been there. But I have an understanding of the culture from working closely with the community.

Working with such a variety of different groups must be a challenge.

It is, but I think it gives me quite a full awareness of what is going on in the com-munity. With Women in the Rebuild I know the issues that women are facing in the rebuild of their lives and of their busi-nesses, which are two quite different issues. On the Chinese side it’s about understand-ing and building relationships, and with Michelle Mac it’s about managing work-life balance and dealing with those issues.

So they’re all quite different, but the common theme is building better business through relationships.

So do you have free time, and if so, what do you do with it?

In my free time – I do have free time – I love gardening and good British drama. I love mountain biking, too.

Which part of the city are you living in?At the moment I’m living two steps away

from the red zone in Kaiapoi. Were you living there before the earth-

quakes? No, I was living in Mt Pleasant at time of

the quakes, so my house was one of those ones that slid down the hill. I became a refugee after that, out in Rangiora.

I actually went on a flight, a week after

the earthquake, to Hawaii. I thought I was escaping the disaster, but then I was caught up in the tsunami warnings there. We had a level eight vertical evacuation, so we spent a night up on a mountainside and it was far from relaxing. My friends refuse to travel with me now.

Do you have a partner or family?I have a partner. He’s also involved in

international trade with China.Have you always lived in Christchurch?Yes, I was born and bred here.Do you have a favourite place in the city

at the moment? At the moment I don’t have a favourite

part, because I don’t like the look of a lot of the new development and the architecture coming into the city.

I actually think, and I’ve told Roger Sutton this, that families need places to go that aren’t in the city. To go somewhere like the Botanic Gardens they have to go into the city, and the city is not a happy place at the moment, and it holds a lot of difficult memories for a lot of people.

If there was somewhere safe and beau-tiful outside the city set apart as a place where families could go, I think that could really encourage them.

Obviously you’ve done a huge amount of work with women. What do you think the value is of awards like Women of Influence?

I think it shows that women have a voice and a role to play in our society. It acknowledges that there are opportunities for women, and it proves that absolutely anybody can step up in these awards and become a finalist.

Obviously at this stage you’re just a finalist in the competition. Have you thought about what it would mean if you won?

Of course you do, but this is tall poppy country so you don’t voice it. If I won it would be an acknowledgement of the achievement of all women in Canterbury, because I’m not just one person doing this. When you see what I’m involved in, this is for all women in all walks of life and all stages of life. I’m representing a community that has been hammered hard. If I did get that far it would be because the judges rec-ognised the whole community behind me.

You must have worked with some pretty inspiring people over the years.

I’ve worked with some amazing people, and I’ve learnt that everyone brings great-ness to the table. As a collective everyone helps each other, and that’s what makes Women in the Rebuild so strong.

Of all the initiatives you’ve been in-volved in, which are you most proud of?

I’m actually proud of them all, because they’ve all been positive for people some-how or somewhere along the way.

ELECTION CANDIDATES Advertising feature

John Ring, Democrats for Social Credit candi-date for Wigram – John stands for economy, ecology, equalityReforming our

money system so that, instead of creating for-eign debt, it is used to provide housing, educa-tion, roads, rail and a strong health system.A guaranteed basic

income for everyone, ensuring that every family can provide good food and a warm, dry home.Fully funded health

and education.No TPPA or asset

sales, no huge debts to foreign banks.Abolish GST and

replace it with a Financial Transactions Tax.Cheap loans on easy

terms for first home buyers.Binding Citizens’

Initiated Referenda.

Gerry Brownlee, National MP for Ilam – As Ilam’s MP and National Party candi-date I know the chal-lenges we’re facing in Christchurch and that the huge task of rebuild-ing needs more than just ‘quick fix’ solutions.

National made the rebuild of Christchurch one of our four major priorities. We’ve com-mitted over $15 billion to Christchurch and we will see the job through.

By working hard for all New Zealanders National has provided six years of stable gov-ernment with a strong economy. Any change, risks the strong progress we have all worked for here in Christchurch.

MMP means this elec-tion will be a close one. Every vote will count, and that is why I am asking for yours.

•Authorised by Gerry Brownlee MP, 283 Greers Rd, Christchurch

Dora Roimata Langsbury, Green can-didate for Te Tai Tonga – Dora is Ngai Tahu and lives in Christchurch.

She brings valuable experience from nine years of being a Greens candidate and from playing a key role in col-laborative earthquake recovery organisations which have community and sustainability at their heart.

Dora’s campaign focuses on her strong commitment to: afford-able, quality education; resourcing schools to become hubs for com-munity services; jobs that sustain our whanau into the future.

Go and meet Dora and take your questions, on Saturday, September 13, between 2pm and 4pm at Café 53, 53 Hampshire St.

Ruth Dyson, Labour can-didate for Port Hills – I am strongly connected to and passionate about the diverse communities within our electorate.

As your elected Member of Parliament, I believe my job is to advocate for you, to support you, and to be a conduit for information.

I have done that job, and want to continue to do that job, with schools, businesses, community organisa-tions, churches and indi-viduals.

I work hard, listen to people and get things done. We have been through so much over recent years.

There are green shoots of recovery but too many people are left behind. I want a recov-ery that takes everyone to a positive future in our city.

•Authorised by Hon Ruth Dyson, 642 Ferry Road, Woolston, Christchurch, 8023.

Eugenie Sage, Green candidate for Port Hills – The Green Party wants a more democratic rebuild where the city council keeps assets like Orion. We will end CERA’s emergency powers and hold elections for ECan in 2015.

We will invest $1 bil-lion in research and development to add value to exports and create jobs.

One in four children lives in poverty. Our tax changes and $500m investment in children’s health and education will help every child to thrive.

Strong rules for clean water will ensure our rivers are clean enough to swim in.

Party Vote Green is a vote for a smarter econ-omy and a cleaner, fairer New Zealand.

•Authorised by Jon Field, Green Party, Level 2 Garrett St, Wellington

Nuk Korako, National candidate for Port Hills – My history in this Port Hills electorate stretches back over five gen-erations. It is where my wife Christine and I have raised our four boys.

This new Port Hills electorate is made up of communities with many different local issues, but one thing we all share is wanting the best for our families, our city and our future. We need to ensure that our community has a representative in Parliament who is com-mitted to continuing to build a strong and pros-perous economy.

A vote for me will give the Port Hills elec-torate influence when decisions are being made about our future.

•Authorised by Nuk Korako, 1/8 Bealey Ave, Christchurch.

Megan Woods, Labour candidate for Wigram – As a local, I under-stand the needs of the Wigram electorate because it’s my home too.

I have a unique blend of political, community and business experi-ence to bring to my representation of our area. I’m committed to being accessible to you and have a proven track record of “getting things done”.

Being a good, local MP means understand-ing that every case file in the office is the story of a real person and not just a number.

I’ve had the privilege of being your MP since 2011, and I’m asking you for your vote to con-tinue in this role.

in for Spring

▌▌FLAME FILES

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Starting on a sad note this week we lost one of our own, Brad Fletcher, from the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade who was tragically killed in an industrial accident at the port.

Every member of the incred-ible family in blue we all belong to feels and grieves for Brad’s loved ones and the Lyttelton brigade.

Spring is officially with us so the actions of the sick individ-ual who keeps lighting fires in the undergrowth at Southshore Spit now ramps up the danger to people and firefighters alike as drier conditions and higher winds make his arson fires more dangerous.

The latest was on Wednes-day afternoon and took pumps and firefighters away from the

city while they dealt with it. We need some help from the public in that area to identify what has become a serial and dangerous fire lighter.

Three kitchen fires this week in Martindales Rd, Heathcote, in Warblington St, Aranui, and in Ilam Rd, Bryndwr.

Two of them involved occu-pants being treated for smoke inhalation.

For the thousandth time our plea is for people cooking to stay in the kitchen but if even that does not allow you to deal with a fire successfully and im-mediately, to get out, closing the door behind you.

I’ve seen too many times the results of people staying in a burning house in a futile effort to stop a fire that has got be-yond them.

Sadly, I’ve seen the body bags. Get out, stay out.

Phone 111 from a safe place.

Jarvis Hansen of Redwood has been named the top student at a recent life skills camp at the New Zealand Defence Force base in Burnham.

He beat students from across the South Island to take the prize for Overall Top Student at the week-long residential course.

The programme is run by New Zealand Blue Light, the police and the defence force, and aims to help young people develop life skills and

leadership training.Blue Light Life Skills co-

ordinator Valerie Tiatia-Seath said Jarvis exemplified the qualities and attitudes the course aimed to instil.

“Jarvis was presented the award of ‘Overall Top Student’ as camp staff felt that he had showed maturity, intuition, excelled as a team member, displayed positive qualities of leadership and was respect-ful towards staff and fellow course members.”

HEALTH

A study of the link between obesity and cancer has found that being overweight is closely linked to 10 common cancers.

Researchers who undertook the biggest study of the links between body mass index and cancer said that of the 5.2 million British patient records studied over a year, 165,000 developed some form of cancer and more than 12,000 of those were connected to the patient being overweight or obese.

Every five-point increase in BMI — equivalent to an increase in weight of about 17.5kg — was associated with a 62 per cent higher risk of cancer of the uterus, a 31 per cent increased risk of gallbladder cancer and a 25 per cent increased risk of cancer of the kidney, according to the study.

The study, by experts at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Farr Institute, found that having a higher BMI was also linked with a greater overall risk of liver, colon, ovarian and breast cancer.

Although it was already known that higher weight increases the chances of con-tracting certain cancers, risk

levels have never before been determined in such detail.

The researchers estimate that if existing trends continue by the mid-2020s there could be more than 3500 additional cases of cancer diagnosed every year. “The number of people who are overweight or obese is rapidly increasing both in the UK and worldwide,” study leader Dr

Krishnan Bhaskaran said. “It is well recognised that this

is likely to cause more diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

‘‘Our results show that if these trends continue we can also expect to see substantially more cancers as a result.”

Excess weight may account for as much as 41 per cent of uterine cancer cases and 10 per

cent of gallbladder, kidney, liver and colon cancers.

Precisely how body fat influ-ences cancer risk is not fully understood.

Dr Bhaskaran said the vari-ation in its impact in different forms of cancer suggested it must be affecting risk “through a number of different processes, depending on the cancer type”.

Volunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing.

Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.

Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.

With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”

This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.

“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”

If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

What will you cook for dinner?35 Glenmore Avenue, CasebrookAuction: September 25, 20143 bedrooms |2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 2-car garage | 1 carport | Listing number: BE192102

Because you will never want to leave this home, there’s ample room to host gatherings and

parties in the large open plan living area and a beautiful garden and deck to have barbeques on.

Watching the young ones run around on the lawn while drinking your wine or beer with your friends is going to be the hardest chore you will have these coming summer evenings.

Wonderfully presented inside with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, there is room to spread for family or friends. Plenty of off-street parking, a proper double garage and a carport means there’s always room for that extra car or boat. The EQC work has been completed for you, just move in and enjoy.

Our sellers have bought at auction and need to be sold. Now it’s your turn to win at auction too.

Open Homes until auction day, Thursday, September 25, 3pm are: Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 2pm to 2.30pm, or to arrange a private viewing, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.

BUILDING PERFECTION WITH ONYX HOMESThe biggest point of difference you will find with Onyx Homes compared to most is you will NEVER deal with a “Sales Consultant”.Quality and value are two words that are misused and abused by Sales Consultants chasing their commissions by over stating and under proving. At Onyx Homes you deal directly with the management team and owners Richard Freeman and Paul West when designing, pricing and building your new home. “This is our business, our livelihood and our reputation and we ensure we get it right every time” states Richard.NO “Sales Consultant” means NO sales commissions. Couple that with the fact they own their own brand and don’t pay Franchisee royalties or cost “safety

contingencies” due to their superior IT platform Onyx Homes can save clients up to $23,000.00 before you even start on an average $300,000 build!!It’s a misconception that choosing an off the shelf standard plan buys you an affordable home. Its very likely the exact same floor plan will be built time and time again and could even be built right next door! Onyx Homes believes you should be unique and build the home that

suits your individual lifestyle and living needs. The truth is at Onyx Homes their award winning designers will design a custom floor plan that often costs less than that of a “Standard Plan”.All tradesman and suppliers are handpicked and stringently

vetted and have negotiated volume purchasing supply deals to ensure clients get market leading pricing. The fully managed project ensures total quality with Onyx Homes standard 15 step quality inspections throughout the build from start to finish. Along with this you receive complementary colour consultancy keeping you on top of the latest trends and colours. You also get the peace of mind of a full 10 Year Registered Master Builders Guarantee. Onyx Homes don’t strive for excellence, they expect it!Building your new house shouldn’t be stressful; it should be fun and easy. Onyx Homes ensures this is the case.

HERES THE FACTS – Stated by Richard Freeman, Director Onyx Homes LtdDon’t believe everything you hear in the media and some building companies trying to margin enhance making ridiculous

statements about huge building price increases. If you want genuine best pricing and top quality give Onyx Homes a call. You are guaranteed to talk to LOCAL industry

professionals with years of experience rather than a sales person trained over night drafted into the industry with limited knowledge and zero idea on building costs working off a pre prepared song sheet. A sad but true statement in many cases.Honesty, integrity, experience and common sense always outweighs “smoke and mirrors” and unfortunately common sense

is not that common in many cases. Building commodity prices ARE stable, and I will personally guarantee that.

“We design your home to suit your site and individual requirements

Account ExecutiveWe are seeking an Account Executive to join our sales team.

With the Christchurch market very strong in the building and home market, the opportunities for advertising sales are very exciting.

Ideally applicants will have previous experience in media sales (but this is not essential), and we encourage anyone who believes they have the ability and passion to build advertising relationships and build on the success of these brands to apply. We are seeking a dedicated organized person with a determination to succeed.

Applicants should be able to work to targets and budgets, be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with our customers, build new business, and be an “ideas’’ person working in a team environment.

Remuneration and employment conditions are excellent.

The successful applicant will be based at The Christchurch Star Company located in central Christchurch.

The Christchurch Star Company is a diversified media business. Our flagship The Star is one of the country’s largest newspapers by circulation and the country’s only free metropolitan newspaper. The company also publishes six community newspapers, several lifestyle and trading magazines and award winning feature publications. Our growing online presence includes digital editions of all our newspapers, websites and New Zealand’s largest media facebook community. The company also organises two of the city’s most iconic annual events, The Star City 2 Surf and The Star Home and Leisure Show.

If you are a confident person seeking a challenge and are prepared to work under pressure but enjoy the rewards, you will love this opportunity.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until filled, so if this is of interest please send in your CV promptly.
