Environment Canterbury annual compliance monitoring report show that it received 304 dust complaints in the Christchurch-West Melton Water Management Zone for the 2014/2015 period – a 145 per cent increase from the last year. In the report, ECan staff said it had started a dust monitor- ing study in response to the increase. But residents living nearby the quarries on Christchurch’s western outskirts are unhappy with ECan. Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association chairperson Bob Cross said he felt quarries got away with dust because ECan was not enforcing the resource consents. He said he often saw trucks coming out of the site uncov- ered with the dust blowing all over the place. However, ECan Monitoring and Compliance regional man- ager Marty Mortiaux responded that it has been working closely with the residents and quarry operators. “The residents are supporting ECan’s three-month air quality monitoring programme.” Gilberthorpes Estate Resident Association secretary Kevin Bennett said the report didn’t surprise him. “I saw a lot of trucks going down the road last week all loaded up. It was a windy day and these trucks probably had half their loads.” Mr Mortiaux said dust from trucks entering and leaving sites had been a problem in the past but had mitgated the problem by installing a wheel wash and sealing accessways. Halswell’s rapid population growth has residents calling for an urgent road infrastructure review because current ones are not meeting needs.

Halswell Residents’ Associa-tion secretary David Hawke and member Ross McFarlane have asked for the an urgent review from the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board.

They said rapid redevelop-ment in the south-west of the city had radically altered the nature of the traffic network-from quasi-rural to developed residential.

Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck and board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton have asked for a city council staff investigation to be completed by July.

Traffic congestion was also due to the neighbouring Selwyn district travelling via the area

and Halswell residents suffered the consequences, they said.

Mr Hawke said it is about the way traffic is managed and issues like get-ting older people across the road with busy traffic.

“Nicholls Rd is a good ex-ample. You have got an over-60s unit on one side and shops on the other. And again there is no way for them to cross the road.”

He said Nicholls Rd should be dropped to 30km/h due to traffic density getting higher and the supermarket upgrade attracting more elderly residents.

Other infrastructure elements they want to have looked at is cycleways around the suburb and where buses are stopping.

Roads that were listed as a high priority in need of a review were Nicholls Rd, Halswell Rd (Hendersons to Candys Rd) and Halswell Junction Rd.

The review of the roading

infrastructure in Halswell has come as part of the Council Speed Limit Review 2016.

The Council Speed Limit Review 2016 requires the city council to review the roads in the city and happens once every two-three years.

“It really is the one opportunity to hold the city council to account about how they are doing traffic management around Halswell,” Mr Hawke said.

Ms Broughton said the board is supportive of the residents.

“Every time it comes up for a review we always argue these roads should have a lower speed limit,” she said.

MORE TRAFFIC: Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke said a general road infrastructure review is needed in Halswell because current roads are not meeting the growing population’s needs. Right: Traffic on Halswell Rd.

SEARCH WARRANTSPolice executed search warrants on two Christchurch addresses last week. The search warrants were a result of the investigation into the assault of a lone man at the Riccarton Bus Lounge last month. A nineteen-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault. Two men aged 19 and 21 and three youths, two aged 15 and one aged 16 spoke with police and all will be charged with “wounding with intent”. All offenders will appear in the youth court today.

ORIENTEERING COURSEThe Peninsula and Plains Orienteers are putting a permanent course into the Halswell Quarry in late April/early May and is looking for help from the community to do it. At present, 28 posts in the Halswell Quarry will be dug into the ground. The posts are going to be installed on Saturday, April 30. For more information email [email protected]

CAR CRASHES INTO PARKED VEHICLETwo teenagers sustained moderate injuries after a car crashed into a parked vehicle. St Johns was alerted to the scene at 2.22am on Shands Rd last Sunday. The two teenagers were taken to Christchurch Hospital.

Neil Osborne responds to the Western News’ article on the troubled Riccarton Bus Lounge

Being a former bus driver I’ve seen these antics at Church Corner and by the Sockburn

roundabout. Kids just want to play ball

and don’t understand that the ball can do serious damage if it bounces off a car or smashes through a shop window.

Have the stop moved back

to where it once was, remove the footpath and one line of car parks by McDonald’s.

What’s required is something like an overhead walkway, passengers could then cross Riccarton Rd safely.

MARK THOMAS, FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Smoke alarms should be like car seat belts.

Nobody thinks twice about clicking tight every time they get into a car. Likewise working smoke alarms should be an abso-lute expectation in every home.

Which made this weekend an important one because daylight saving ended with clocks being hauled back an hour. You might have seen the latest advertise-ments from the Fire Service, as always encouraging people to use the day as a trigger to hav-ing the batteries in your smoke alarms changed.

Too many of us use the warn-ing cheep of the alarm to tell us it’s time to change batteries. There are good reasons not to do this. If it happens while you’re away it’s possible the battery will be completely dead by the time you return. You’ll be living with the mistaken belief that the alarm will warn you of fire.

If you’re home when it hap-pens I can almost guarantee it

will occur at about 3am. Which means the only way you’ll get back to sleep will be to pull the alarm down and remove the bat-tery. You’re now unprotected. And will remain so for as long as it takes you to buy a new battery and reinstate the alarm.

Using this weekend every year to ensure your smoke alarm bat-teries are changed, or if you have alarms with 10-year batteries, that they are cleaned with the brush accessory on your vacuum cleaner, creates a habit of a life-time. More likely a longer life-time too.

Change the batteries in your smoke alarmsCharity group Learn Active is in

need of a new van to continue its work with intellectually-disabled people.

It runs a programme called Active Discoveries that cater for 18-35-year-olds with intellectual disabilities who wish to get active and make new friends.

The group hopes to raise $10,000 for the new van on its ‘Givealittle’ page.

The charity’s old van broke down and they are now fund-raising for a new one so they can continue to take students on trips.

It runs several programmes based on different levels of abilities. They run once a week throughout the school term rang-ing from hiking to rock climb-ing, kayaking and more.

Learn Active has more than 40 students involved in the pro-grammes and needs transport to

get them there.“Having a reliable vehicle to

transport us and our equipment to outdoor locations throughout Canterbury is vital to the suc-cess of our programmes,” Learn

Active director and founder Karla Roberts said.

A reserve will be transformed into a more people-friendly area by the Riccarton community.

Landscape improvements are under way to improve water quality at Paeroa Reserve.

Physical works are planned to be undertaken next month while planting will begin in May.

Environment Canterbury has donated $50,000 to help cover the costs of cleaning up the area.

The plans recently approved by the Riccarton-Wigram Com-munity Board will include installing riffles which aerate the water increasing oxygen for stream life.

Other plans for the Paeroa Reserve are installing a timber-viewing platform and interpretation panel to raise awareness for the importance of the water environment.

Planting new trees, includ-ing fruit trees and native ri-parian to increase biodiversity and shading of the stream is also on the agenda.

Senior Sergeant Steve Jones said projects like this do won-

ders for the community’s crime rate.

“By bringing people together and working on a project to-gether they form really good relationships and friendships and just improves the whole com-munity,” he said.

Maintenance days involving the whole community will be held as part of the project.

Christchurch West Melton Zone Committee Andrew Con-galton said once the job is fin-ished it means the water quality is going to be better and that will have downstream effects all the way down to the Avon.

The merger of two polytechnics now has a name, the Ara Institute of Canterbury.

The new name was announced last week after it was decided in November last year that Aoraki Polytechnic and the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology would merge.

Ara, meaning arise or path-way in Maori, is the next stage in the over 200 year combined history of CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic.

Underneath the new institute’s name is the Maori phrase ‘ara rau, taumata rau’, which means ‘many pathways, many opportuni-ties’.

The Ara logo represents an upward journey of learning, while also show-ing Maori tukutuku panelling, which was traditionally used to decorate meeting houses.

A plan has been put in place to extend the range of programmes and services and become a destination for national and international students.

Both institutes have been in the Canterbury and Waitaki region for more than 100 years each.

Ara Institute of Canterbury chairwoman Jenn Bestwick (left) said the intention of the new facility is to continue working with industry partners and our communities to adapt to the needs of the region and of modern learners.

“Our new name signals we have stepped into an exciting new future together.”

Ara deputy chairwoman Janie Annear said business, science, ICT and youth pathway programmes have been extended to south Canterbury this year.

our PEOPLE > Do you know someone who should be our next Our People? Nominate them now by emailing [email protected] Mike Coleman

Reverend helps others fight

Hi Mike, tell me a little bit about yourself and your family.

Well I’m 53-years-old. I’m married to Robyn, we’re about to have our 29th anniversary, she’s a medical scientist. I always say she’s the bright one. I have a Bachelor of Commerce and Accounting.

I graduated from Canterbury University and the Christchurch Teachers College. I went on to teach at Waimea College, as well as St Bede’s College and Linwood High which is now Linwood College.

I travelled overseas and backpacked around the Americas with my wife, then got a Bachelor of Theology in Auckland, and that was my training to become a minister. I actually grew up as a Roman Catholic and went to Xavier College, but later on became

a Baptist before becoming Anglican.

Wow that’s quite a background. And do you have any children?

Yes, we have three kids, Matthew our eldest is 25, Simon is 19, and Emily is 11. Matthew is a product manager at an electronics firm, Simon is doing his second year studying chemistry at Canterbury University, and Emily is at Banks Avenue School. I also love cycling, going to the gym and having fun with the family.

We also have one grandchild, Matthew and his partner Paris have a boy called Jack, who is three and he is just beautiful. He loves going to pre-school and kindy, loves all the boys stuff, all the trucks and trees, he’s just got heaps of energy.

Tell me about the Wider Earthquake Communities

Action Network, how did it come about?

It was started by three people in the community, myself as one of lead facilitators. Basi-cally we were there to speak on behalf of people strug-gling with their house being in the red zone, or other land issues including settlements with insurers. It actu-ally ended up becoming a quite strong activist group, and any negotiations we tried to have were basi-cally shut down. So in the end they forced the group to protest more to get people’s issues heard.

How successful were those protests?

We had varying success, in the

early days we showed some in-surance companies up for what they were doing and what they really were. Some of the things they were offering was just

wrong. The Govern-ment seemed to be happy to sit

back and Can-terbury be devastated. That really concerned many of us who were

looking to help those in the com-

munities.So

do you think it’s

a lot better today?

No.

Even as we look around today. (Earthquake Minister) Gerry Brownlee talks about the Margaret Mahy Family Playground more than anything else when he is talking about Christchurch’s success. It’s his No 1 defence for questions on the recovery. When you talk to homeowners you realise there are still thousands and thousands who are still locked in insurance battles and fighting for a fair deal. It was the reason WeCan was formed, to give a voice to those who couldn’t.

And what was your particular role in the whole setup?

I was the media spokesman throughout that time, through two and a half years. During that time I was working full time as a counsellor and a reverend as well. So at the start of 2014 I kind of realised it was time to leave WeCan. From there I

decided to focus more on the insurance companies

and helping others get through their

battles, and only wanted fairness for both sides.

Reverend Mike Coleman speaks to Fraser Walker-Pearce about how he became an earthquake protest organiser, backpacking around the Americas, and being a school counsellor

earthquake battlesI never fought for more than

a policy would honour, only what a policy offered. We just looked for a fair honouring. We weren’t trying to get people rich when they were only entitled to so much, and we’ve found that the insurance companies have respected that. There are no guiding rules to ensure insur-ance companies treat people fairly, which is ridiculous to be honest.

Hasn’t the recovery gone on long enough already?

Absolutely it has. The nature of this recovery for insurance companies is about spinning a line to get through the year, spreading the recovery over 20 years. To have private homeowners waiting for that long is plain disgraceful, it’s not about people it’s about ensuring the Government’s books are kept healthy. I just find it really interesting that we can paint all kinds of artwork throughout the city but can’t have all of our people in houses.

Do you have any spare time at all?

Yes of course! I’m a school counsellor at Middleton Grange School. I really enjoy working

one-on-one with adolescents and seeing them grow. Getting an understanding of what they’re going through is really impor-tant. I think I have the skills to help them, and I really enjoy seeing them feel empowered. I mean a lot of them are still finding themselves in life and gaining an awareness about the world around them, so finding their way in life can be quite

difficult. I’ve been through a lot in my own life so I can kind of pass that wisdom on in a way.

I can imagine in a job like that, you’d meet a lot of interesting people, anyone stand out in particular?

There are a few that kind of stand out. I remember I was helping some boys, one I seem to remember was at the age of nine, and he was caught up in

his parents’ divorce. He was really quite an angry young man, and was really struggling with life in general, with his behaviour spinning out of control. In one session I asked him to paint a picture, and he painted what he said he always wanted to have, which was a Holden car and a girlfriend on his arm.

That’s very cute.

Yes, it was. After he left school he sent me a picture on Facebook of him and his girlfriend and his Ford car which he had saved up to get, and he said he was going to get a Holden. I thought that was amazing. I’ve been involved with counselling since 1995, when I helped start up the Delta Community Support Trust.

I’m sure on the other side of that spectrum though, there would be times where someone is asking for help and you wouldn’t know how to help them?

It can be quite disheartening if you find a student that you can’t work out the thing that they are telling you is wrong. And that can stem from a whole number of things. It’s very hard even for a youth mental health worker, because they can also really struggle to help someone like that. It can be very sad to see teens on medication for mental illnesses as well. The stress of the quakes has been immense for some kids. Especially those who are coming from homes that are still unsettled. We’ll see that for many years to come I think.

FIGHTER: Mike Coleman organised and led protests against former city council chief executive Tony Marryatt’s choice to accept a $70,000 pay rise.

Hillmorton High School drama students had the opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at The Court Theatre last week.

The students visited the costume department, saw the dressing rooms, the large range of the theatre props as well as the theatre’s very own workshop.

Deputy principal Eleanor Sim said the students had the privilege of being shown around

by one of the witches from The Court Theatre’s production of Macbeth which has just finished its season.

Three talented gymnasts from the Riccarton and Halswell area will be flying across the globe to compete in the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championship.

The Christchurch School of Gymnastics will be sending four gymnasts to compete in the com-petition to be held next weekend.

Riccarton residents Charlotte Sullivan and Mackenzie Slee along

with Halswell’s Courtney McGregor will be travelling to the event.

The team will be heading to Everett, Washington to compete against gymnasts from around the world.

This event serves as a warm-up meet for the Rio Olympic Test Event which follows on April 16-19 in Brazil.

Courtney said she will use this opportunity as her final hit-out before she

travels to Rio to attempt to get a placing for women’s gymnastics.

She is looking forward to competing since she has learnt more difficult vault routines.

“I am looking forward to competing my new sec-ond vault – I added 0.30 difficulty so now I will be more competitive.”

Hoon Hay resident Stella Ashcroft, 13, will also be joining the team to compete for the first time.

Lyprinol contains an incredibly pure & potent extract of N.Z. green-lipped mussels. Lyprinol contains nutrients that are critical to control inflammation that are not found in fish oil.

Scientific Studies Show Lyprinol:

• Supports & maintains joint function & mobility

• Effectively supports a reduction in swelling, pain, inflammation & stiffness

• Supports healthy airways & may reduce the severity

& incidence of bronchial constriction (Asthma)

• Supports cardiovascular function

Scientists are always on the lookout for solutions to solve medical problems and reduce suffering. They noted that NZ coastal Maori had far less

arthritis and other inflammatory illnesses than inland Maori. This was apparently due to a diet especially high in fresh raw green-lipped mussels.

Lyprinol contains a highly concentrated liquid extract of the green-lipped mussels from NZ waters. This mussel extract provides a spectrum of omega-3 fatty acids and other compounds that are highly concentrated and highly absorbable in the human body, due to Lyprinol’s patented extraction process as well as a specialised blending process that is so unique it is considered a trade secret. In fact, Lyprinol is the most potent omega-3 preparation available, being 200 to 300 times more potent than fish oil and with each softgel capsule being equivalent to seven to 10 fresh raw green-lipped mussels. It is also one of the purest and most toxin-free sources of omega-3 fatty acids on the market.

Lyprinol, being a pure and natural product, is free of the potentially serious side effects of typical anti-inflammatory drugs. Many non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been linked with serious

health problems, including higher rates of heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.

Omega-3 fatty acids, as found in Lyprinol, have been shown to reduce cardiovascular risks. These same omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, help protect the eyes, support brain function as well as improve overall health. Omega-3 fatty acids are still one of our biggest deficiencies, with statistics showing very few people obtain enough of them. Lyprinol provides one of the finest, purest and most absorbable form of omega-3 available. Although Lyprinol supports blood flow and circulation, it is not a blood thinner and does not cause increased bleeding or haemorrhaging.

Lyprinol is truly an amazing breakthrough in supporting good health and reducing inflammation that has been implicated in disease progression and the ageing process. Clinical research shows Lyprinol provides consistent and repeatable results without any known side effects.

Lyprinol and further information is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Rd, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!

With eight clinics throughout Christchurch, there are hundreds of people who can now eat, talk and smile with

complete assurance, thanks to the team at Duchenne Dental. Their talented clinical and technical teams believe in providing advanced denture care so that their patients can leave with dentures that feel comfortable, look perfectly natural and are suitably secure.

They use current, state-of-the-art technology. So whether you need full or partial dentures, replacements or brand-new, they will create dentures that are a precise fit for you. They combine digital

scanning technology and injection moulding techniques with handcrafting to make sure that their patients leave them with dentures that won’t cause ongoing painful ulcers or slip in their mouths. Their kind and encouraging service leaves their customers “feeling like a celebrity...and their follow up care is exceptional”. Some clients turn to them in desperation but leave feeling “transformed”.

If you too want to eat, talk, smile with confidence, phone 03 375 4444 or visit www.duchenne.co.nz to find the clinic closest to you and book your complimentary consultation.

For decades scientists believed brain damage with age, after a stroke or injury was irreversible and brain neurons could not be repaired.

In more recent times, new research has shown that neurons can grow back with the right conditions and that a special extract of gingko biloba (EGb-761 or Tebonin) has been clinically found to assist in this. The implications for stroke recovery are obvious, but researchers also know many of us suffer from undetected “micro-strokes” that over a period of time slowly reduce our cognitive function.

Tebonin is prescribed worldwide as a natural supportive agent for a healthy brain and cognitive function. It supports healthy mental performance, concentration, focus, alertness, motor function and to help with many conditions, including tinnitus (ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo and normal balance. Tebonin improves micro-circulation and helps the blood flow reach those critical places it needs to get to. It is a potent antioxidant and makes the red blood cells more pliable and capillary walls

more flexible. Tebonin is one of the most widely studied

and researched herbal products in the world and is the only ginkgo biloba extract manufactured via a patented multi-step extraction process. Each small tablet contains a highly concentrated 50:1 extract to give you a therapeutic clinical dose without having to take a large amount of the herb.

Of 25 ginkgo biloba products on the market and tested by a major medical journal, only Tebonin passed all five of the test requirements. Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements and the rest didn’t pass more than three out of five requirements. Tebonin is the only ginkgo biloba extract shown to activate all areas of the brain and is considered the gold standard in ginkgo. Tebonin has been trusted by millions of consumers worldwide for over 30 years, with more than 8,000,000 tablets consumed each day.

Tebonin and further information is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy in New Brighton. Phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!

Complementary medicine is becoming increasingly sought after in New Zealand as people become aware of the many

different methods of treating pain and ill health that are available here.

Christchurch-based Chinese health practitioner Lan Xiao has developed a method of treatment, which she says has as an immediate affect on a wide variety of pains and health conditions. It is known as ‘acupuncture without needles’.

Lan describes it as being similar to reflexology in that the problem area on the body is determined through pressure, but is much more accurate.

Trained as a medical practitioner in China, Lan came to New Zealand in 1992 and began practising acupuncture in 1995. From that discipline she created her acupuncture without needles, and uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body. This can include arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury.

“For example, the treatment has been very successful for people who have painful joints caused by arthritis,” Lan says.

Acupuncture without needles is also effective in restoring energy levels,

she says.“As people age their energy is reduced,

and this can lead to other health problems. The acupuncture without needles treatment is like the body’s battery being charged up again, so their energy levels are restored, which in turn helps overcome their health problems.”

Lan also uses it to treat depression and anxiety, and says it can help with addiction problems as well.

“After the treatment the person has no cravings – because it treats the cause of the addiction.”

She says the results are immediate, though people may need several treatments, depending on the extent of their health problem, and while it is slightly painful for few moments, everyone can tolerate it.

Lan Xiao’s website, www.drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz, includes videos of people whose health problems have been overcome after receiving the treatment.

Her clinic is located at 108 Sawyers Arms Road, and her hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12pm to 5pm. To discuss your health issues or make an appointment, phone 323 4168 or 027 231 88388.

To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-

Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements.

VEnTiLATion This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. it is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.

Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy

as effectively and efficiently as possible resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

it is important to remember, when selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the installation and consumers could be responsible for any repair or damage caused to the system due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs.

environment in which to live and work. in case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. if exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. in summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.

it is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.
