On behalf of Coiste Thiobraid Arann Thiar, I extend a cead mile failte to everyone here at the match tonight. I expect an enjoyable sporting game and you can contribute to this by co-operating with the stewards and making sure that __ -" your children also keep a safe distance from the field of play.

This is the showpiece of our hurling year, and there are many young players on both teams. They need your encouragement and support and hopefully some will yet wear the blue and gold with distinction and help to bring the premier county the All-Ireland success which has eluded us over the past number of years.

I must also thank our loyal sponsors Tipperary Co-Op Super Valu. They are a successful Company and their support for GAA activities over a long number of years in West Tipperary and beyond is well known. I also in return ask our patrons to support the various enterprises of the Co-Op. I thank the management for their help, especially general manager Tim Dullea,Vice Chairman Matt Quinlan and the Board sends best wishes for a speedy recovery to thei r Chairman Sean Murray. We wish the Co-Op Continued success in the years ahead.

I wish Willie Barrett and his officials well this evening. It's an honour for the Board to have a referee of his experience and calibre officiating at this final.

The curtain-raiser is the JHC 'A' game between Kickhams and Rockwell Rovers and this should be a close game. I wish Francis Kearney and his officials well in this game.

On an evening like this we should spare a thought for the other clubs which participated in our senior championship. Their officials and players also worked hard. but did not make it to the final-beidh 13. eile ag an bPaorach. We hope that the winners and runners up this evening as well as the Combo will later make a realistic effort to bring the Dan Breen Cup back after a long absence again to the West.

Finally. I wish to thank the Golden club for providing excellent facil ities for this final. A word of thanks also to Seamus King, Lennie Fitzgerald, Michael MCCarthy and the Runai Jerry Ring for their contribution to this programme.

  • Player Profile of the Past: Ger O 'Neill (Cappawhite)

By Leonard fitzgerald When one dwells over the recently announced West Tipperary team of the Millennium, it's easy to see that the eventual selected learn features the majority from Cashel King Cormacs and Knockavilla Kickhams, with the remaining positions spread between, Clonoulty Rossmore, Sean Treacy's, Eire Og Annacarty, Lattin/Cullen and last but not least, Cappawhlte. When the Left comer forward pOSition was being filled, Ger O'Neill had won the voter's choice. The long term ESB employee has experienced his fair share of success over the years. From a very early age, he began to show promise. At the Cappawhite Vocational School, it was easy to see that Gel' was head and shoulders over the others. He almost solely car-ried the expectations in the county Vocational schools. Twenty five years ago. in 1980, he proved to emerge as the club's last dual county player operating at wing back In the Minor football championship losing narrowly to the Kingdom, who in turn took the national title. He enloyed beuer progress with the minor hurlers, before climbing the heights of All-Ireland honours. Hampered by a serious hand injury, he elected to play in the minor final against Wexford and contributed handsomely despite his ailment. The following year, he gained promotion to the U-21 s in a period where it was hugely difficult to receive a starting berth, as the Premier County were hoping to complete a third successive title, Ger's hurling was incredible. He in turn made comer forward his own. scoring five points from open play and giving his direct opponent Dick O'Hara a torrid time throughout. It wu no surprISe when Nicky English pinpomted Ger O'Neill as one of the greatest hurlers he ever had the privilege to play with. Ger was very slight in his prime. Opponents under estimated his potential and suffered accordingly. His first touch, vision and accuracy made him the player he was. Nicky English paid him a great compliment when saying. "Ger was virtually unstoppable as an under age player, but his inter county career never quite received the longitude it deserved". In his final year on the U-21 'sTipp again reached theAll-Ireland final but suffered at the hands of an inspired Galway side. In 1985, Gel' made his championship debut in the blue and gold, His Munster final appearance against defending All Ireland champions Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh was to prove his finest hour, notching 1-3 from play despite Tipp's eventual 4- 17 to 4_1 1 loss. He was also making his presence felt on the club circuit. In 1983. Cappawhite finally came of age with a first senior West title since 1962. Gel' added two more such titles in 1984 and 1985. His final pass to the unmarked Austin Buckley for the match winning goal in the closely fought '85 decider against Cashel clinched the three in a row. In 1987, Cappawhite reached the promised land claiming the county senior title, with Gel' at full forward one of their chief scorers. They reached the Munster dub final and Ger required pain killing injections to enable him to play, such was his importance to the team. In 1991. Gel' received a call-up to the county team, He was introduced in their semi-final win over Galway, but due to their abundance of talent failed to make the starting line-up for the final as Tipp recorded their 24th All -Ireland title. Gel' continued to play competitively for the dub until 1998, acting as player manager. All the while he ventured into management, coaching the West Tipp U-16's to a provincial final in 1994. He further joined Dinny Cahill and Paudie Butler in helping Tipp record a first Minor Al l -Ireland title in 22 years in 1996, He was also partly responSible for bringing the Tipp minors back to another All -Ireland final Without success in 1999, He also enjoyed a most productive spell guiding Galtee Rovers from Junior to senior status in four years, culminating in county Junior and Intermediate titles. After giving so much to the game he loved, he is truly one of the dub's great ambassadors.

    Cappawhite Captain Paddy Julian.

Flame Haired Paddy is a tireless worker on the field. His energy is essential to Cappa's game. Paddy is in his 1st year as captain of the team and has played senior hurling for the last 6 years. Paddy first came to the fore in Cappa's U-21 county championship winning team of 1999. A holder of 2·west senior hurling medals already. Paddy says his 2 brothers Tommy and Jack are his toughest opponents.

Paddy graduated from UCD and is now working as a physiotherapist in Limerick regional hospital. As well as hurling he is an accomplished footballer and also plays Rugby with nearby Kilfeacle. Paddy's remaining sporting ambitions are to win more honours with Cappawhite and he also has a desire to wear the Blue & Gold ofTipperary. Another west medal today would go a long way to fulfilling some of those ambitions.
