Finding morel mushrooms in all the right placesLast week I wentorel hunting and I

ave to admit I dontnderstand why every-ne keeps talking aboutow hard it is to findhem. I found severalounds in two places,

    ust a couple hundredeet apart.

It was my first timectually seeing a morelnd theyre bigger thanexpected, actually. Inderstand that mosteople dont like to tellthers where they foundorels, but I dont seehy I shouldnt shareith you. The firstorels I found were atillers Produce on the

orner of First Streetnd U.S. 31, and nextfound a whole bowlf them at Port City rganics, in their new

ocation at the corner of irst and Division.

It was the first time Ive beenin Port City Organics since they moved and Im impressed. Surethe store is bigger and parking iseasy (the lot behind the store) but what really impressed me mostis that theres a great selection of fresh and organic dairy, produceand baked goods from growersand producers right in Manisteeand surrounding counties.

Thats a firm priority forowner Joe Dumas, who also usedlocal contractors and suppliers torenovate the former Apothecary Shop location.

Buying locally and using localcontractors and suppliers makesa big difference to the strength of

our local economy and wheneverI can I like to share stories aboutit. And while were on the subjectof working together ... last week I was driving north past ManisteeNational Golf & Resort and wasamazed to see that the parkinglot was just packed with cars.Great. I thought. ManisteeNational is having a good day.

As I looked more closely Inoticed that many of the cars were Fords. I was puzzling thisout as I drove and then I passedManistee Ford, whose empty parking lot was being resurfaced.

The mystery was solved andI had to smile at this example of working together it just works better. Lets work together tohave a prosperous week.

    Invasive plants:Unwanted in state parks

LANSING Visitorsto Michigan state parksor recreation areas areinvited to participate in anew Early Detection andRapid Response (EDRR)initiative to find the firstoutbreaks of unwantedinvasive plants. Early detection will aid in rapidresponse control measuresaimed at eliminating theinvasive plants before they become widely established.

This summer, threeinvasive plants Japaneseknotweed, black swallow- wort and garlic mustard are being targeted forEDRR by the Departmentof Natural Resources andEnvironment. Japaneseknotweed and black swal-low-wort are not widely established in the state, and while garlic mustardis widespread in southernMichigan, it is still uncom-mon in the NorthernLower Peninsula andUpper Peninsula stateparks.

Invasive plants crowdout native species andchange the ecology of natural areas. Complexfood webs are simplified asareas are taken over by asingle plant species. Forest

regeneration is oftennegatively impacted andrecreational opportuni-ties, including hunting andfishing, may also be lost orcompromised. Even park pathways and buildingscan be damaged by inva-sive plants.

Most invasive speciesare introduced to new areas by humans. Park visitors can help preventthe spread of invasive

plants by cleaning your boots/shoes, clothes, carand trailer tires or other

equipment before enteringor leaving a park.

By reporting Japaneseknotweed, black swal-low-wort and garlic mus-tard sightings, you canhelp protect the naturalresources that offer publicrecreation and educationalopportunities.

Possible sightingscan be reported at any state park by filling outthe Unwanted PlantsDetection Card, by mark-ing the location of thedetected plants on apark visitor map, or by recording the GPS coor-

dinates. Campers canturn in the cards, mapsor recorded information

at any state park, e-mailthe information to [email protected] withUnwanted Plants inthe subject line, fax it to(517) 373-4625, or mailit to DNRE-RecreationDivision, Attention:EDDR, P.O. Box 30257,Lansing, MI 48909-7757.Sightings can also bereported at www.MISIN.msu.edu.

For more informationabout getting involvedin the EDRR initiative, including how to identify invasive plants, visit the
