Making a differenceAmy Wojciechowski chosen as

News Advocate Citizen of the Year

    Manistee News Advocates

    CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

    Wojciechowski serves as president of

Manistee County Habitat for Humanity, isactive in the Good Shepherd Church anddonates her time to many other worthycauses in the Manistee community. It wassomething the editors at the ManisteeNews Advocate felt made her the perfectselection as their 2011 Citizen of the Year.

Her ability to find as much time tovolunteer as she does is amazing consider-ing Wojciechowski is department chairand professor of marketing and manage-ment at West Shore Community College. However, as she pointed out, volunteeringis something that was nurtured in her at

an early age.I grew up in a family that was a very

giving family, said Wojciechowski. Wefelt that we needed to give back to thecommunity and the people we enjoyed

being around, so I kind of had thatinstilled in me.

Wojciechowski said the concept of giv-ing back to others is something she andher husband, Jim, made sure to pass on totheir two sons.

As our children were growing up,we wanted them to learn that samecompassion for their community, said

Wojciechowski. They were eager and will-ing at young ages, so it was easy to bringthem and have them involved. The morethey did, the more they wanted to do.

Wojciechowski said it was her latefather, Carl Rummel Jr., who proved to beher personal inspiration to get involved asa volunteer in Habitat for Humanity aboutseven years ago.

My father was an architect and abuilder, but he was also a real contributorto the community, she said. As you growup, you learn to appreciate things at differ-ent levels, and when he was working, I hadno comprehension of what it took to builda house. Habitat provides an opportunity

    Enthusiastic.

If there is one word thatexemplifies the 2011 ManisteeNews Advocate Citizen of the

ear Amy Wojciechowski, itis enthusiastic. The manypeople who nominatedWojciechowski all pointed toher ability to put her heartand soul into any volunteerproject she tackles.

for us to get down and dirtyto work as hard as youwant and learn as much asyou can.

    Honoring herfather

She said becominginvolved in Habitat was anexcellent way to honor herfather and what he meantto her. To this day, she car-ries his memory to every

ob site and the thought ofit still chokes her up.When he passed away,

I was able to get his ham-mer and tool belt andthey go with me, saidWojciechowski. He wasvery inspirational to me.His tool belt is a little rag-gedy now, but I still use itfor my own security.

Wojciechowski chucklesas she recalls how thoseinitial days in Habitat forHumanity evolved into herbecoming president of theorganization.

I started off as a lowlylittle nail pounder andadvanced to this point, said Wojciechowski. Ireally found it to be an edu-cational experience, as wellas an opportunity to helpsomeone who really needsa home. When you workwith those Habitat partnerfamilies, they are so appre-ciative, and you know youare making a difference. So,the small amount of workthat I can do, and the nailpounding I can do, seems

so rewarding in such aneasy way.

Wojciechowski alsopoints to the many otherswho work on Habitat at thelocal level as being inspira-tional. She extends a greatdeal of praise to the teameffort that comes fromeveryone.

    We have so many

wonderful board membersand other volunteers whohave helped in build-ing Habitat homes, said

Wojciechowski. It reallyshows the goodness in ourcommunity. We have sucha caring, loving commu-nity and we show it everySaturday morning when weare building at the house.

However, those whonominated Wojciechowskisay her role is much greaterthan the modest way shetalks about herself.

While most Habitat forHumanity affiliates have atleast one paid administra-tor, ours prospers as anall-volunteer organization, said Audrey Crow. Aspresident, Amy donatescountless hours to makeHabitat for Humanity suc-cessful, providing a handup and not a hand-outto struggling families inneed of decent housing inManistee County.

    Whether she isresearching grants on

her computer, climbingthrough the rafters at a

build, or promoting theHabitat philosophy at thepulpit of a local church,

Amy more than gets the jobdone.

Her enthusiasm anddedication makes her aninspiration to others whorespond by volunteeringtheir own time and skills.

Kristine Malone hada similar perspective ofthe leadership qualitiesthat are possessed by

Wojciechowski. She is a positive leaderwith an effervescent per-sonality who motivatesothers to give of their time, talent and treasure, saidMalone.

    ModestMike Thompson said

what impresses him themost about Wojciechowskiis the way she pushes thesuccess of the local Habitatgroup away from herselfand gives it to others in thegroup.

Amy is a ray of bubblysunshine as she goes abouther everyday life helpingothers, said Thompson. She quickly deflectsattention from herself tosomeone else. As presi-dent, she leads Habitat for

Humanity, but she takes nocredit for it. She says every-one else did the work andnot her.

Karen Alberts pointedout that Amy takesthe position of presi-dent to heart. She said

Wojciechowski is a tirelessvolunteer who goes aboveand beyond in making sureall the bases are covered inevery project.

You will not find amore deserving person forthis award, said Alberts.Amy works around the

clock organizing and coor-dinating everything for ourHabitat for Humanity affili-ate. Under her leadership,

we have grown and are ableto get more families in safe,

    basic housing.While working on one

of the Habitat houses,Wojciechowski saidManistee Lions Club mem-

ber Barry Elder was a partof their group. Elder saidhe had a need at the annualLions Club Fish Boil and

    wondered if some of them

could help out.Barry had done somuch for us at the houseevery day that we wantedto give something as a wayof thanking him, said

Wojciechowski. He said ifyou really want to help me,come help at the fish boil,so we donned our apronsand helped out with that

and the pig roast the nextday.

Wojciechowski said oneof the rewarding thingsabout volunteering besidesthe task itself is the people

you encounter. It has been a great

opportunity to mingle witha great group of peopleand do something otherthan building homes, said

    Wojciechowski.It was with that

spirit that inspiredWojciechowski and herhusband to volunteer foranother great communityevent this past fall.

Jim and I decided thisThanksgiving that since

both our kids couldntmake it home, it would bekind of neat to give backto the community at theThanksgiving Day din-ner, said Wojciechowski. It is so well organized.Everybody loves to help, and you can see you aremaking a difference.

    Wojciechowski and

her husband are alsovery active in the GoodShepherd Lutheran Churchas part of the Saturdaynight team.

Our Saturday nightservice is a contemporaryone that we have hadfor 20 years or so, said

Wojciechowski. We havea tremendous band that isthere every Saturday night,so Jim and I thought ifthe pastor can come everySaturday, and the bandcan come every Saturday,

we can easily do the usher-ing, reading and collectingevery Saturday. It is a teameffort, and we love it.

    Busy scheduleMixed in amongst all

of that for Wojciechowskiis meetings she attendsas a member of theManistee County Chamberof Commerce directors.People who know herrealize she is always will-ing to step forward and

donate her time to helpothers. Jennifer Runyan

pointed out that exactpoint in her nomination of

    Wojciechowski.Amy should be the

Citizen of the Century, said Runyan. She is the

best, most kind-heartedperson you will ever meetin your life. She is focused24/7 on helping and serv-ing others. She was raised

by parents with the sameenthusiasm for serving oth-ers and enjoys all that shedoes. She doesnt do thesethings for recognition she just does them becausethey need to be done andits the right thing to do.

    Betty Tarrant agreeswith that assessment.

Amy is the epitomeof community volunteer, said Tarrant. She spendsher entire life serving oth-ers. Even while on the jobas a college professor, sheis always assisting oth-ers above and beyond herrequired work. She burnsthe candle at both ends tohelp others.

All who associate withWojciechowski come tothe same conclusion: Sheis a tireless volunteer andcombines it with an upbeatpersonality everyone elsefeeds off to inspire them to

want to do more.Jim keeps wondering

when I am going to slowdown, but it is kind of fun, said Wojciechowski. I hadto kind of egg him on todo the Thanksgiving DayDinner this year, but after

we were done he said, That

was kind of cool and maybewe should do it next year.Maybe he just needed

to have his appetite whettedwith opportunities.

Being a tireless vol-unteer, a cheerful personand truly an inspiration inher own right is why Amy

Wojciechowski was a natu-ral selection as the 2011Citizen of the Year. Whatis even more important isthe community as a wholeis better because of peoplelike her they makeManistee County the place

    to be.

    NORTH AMERICAN PRECISSYNDICATE

If youre like many Americans, you or someone you love bought or receiveda tablet as a gift recently. The tablet mar-ket is booming. Lighter than laptops andmore powerful than smartphones, tabletsare now the go-to device for anyone look-ing to take their music, entertainment and,

begrudgingly, some work with them.According to a recent study from

Infinite Research, Americans adoption oftablets such as the iPad or Galaxy Tab is happening at a faster pace than anyother electronic device in history, includ-ing computers, game consoles and smart-phones.

In fact, a recent report from eMar-keter projects that by 2014, nearly 90million Americans will be using tabletsmonthly. And already, almost half of therespondents in a Google AdMob survey oftablet users said they use their tablet moreoften than their computer or laptop. Thispopularity is driving people to find waysto make using tablets easier and more con-

venient. To this end, tablet accessories can help

take entertainment and content creationto the next level. Here are five fun ways totrick out your tablet:

Type Up a Best SellerTablets can be used for more than surf-

ing the Web and reading books. With thearray of wireless keyboards designed fortablets, heavy-duty typing is completelydoable. Compact and wireless keyboardslike the Logitech Keyboard Case for iPad2 (also for Samsung Galaxy Tab) combinethe luxury of typing on a comfortablesurface within a protective case that alsoholds your tablet upright.

    Work and the Web,Smarter

Touch-screen cursor control isnt thebest for everything, especially when work-ing on something that requires more

than simple pointing or clicking. In fact,a mouse is a must-have for any task thatrequires formatting text and images, or

navigating the Web for any length oftime. No longer just accessories for PCs,there are a few mouse options designedfor tablets. Look for one that brings laserprecision to interacting with the tablet, and Bluetooth wireless pairing will make iteasy to use on the go.

Beat Your Highest ScoreStrong graphic performance and pro-

cessing speed make tablets a great tool forgamers from the casual to the serious. If you want game-winning precision notafforded by touch-screen controls, attachthe Logitech Joystick for iPad or iPad 2 forthe familiar feel and responsiveness of a

    thumb-stick-style controller.

Get Help in the KitchenThe kitchen is one place a tablet can

be at the center of a domestic experience.Using an adjustable tablet stand, the chefcan pull up and display an online recipe

while being inspired by a favorite playlist, all at once.

    Set the Backyard BBQto Music

Bringing music to your backyard canbe a hassle, often compromising selectionor sound. However, when an iPad (iPhone

or iPod touch) can wirelessly stream musicto a speaker, such as the Logitech WirelessSpeaker for iPad (also available for
