Manistee home to mass mortuary trailer B y JOHN COUNTS Staff W riter If, perchance, the Manistee area suf- fered a terrible calamity such as a natural disaster where many people perished, the right vehicle to help deal with such a devastating incident recently arrived in Manistee County. A vehicle designed to deal with mass fatalities recently moved in one of the Manistee County Road Commission buildings. The “mobile morgue vehicle” is equipped to deal with around 50 fatalities. It has body bags ranging in sizes for infants to adults. There are a couple tents to set up to turn into an office at a disaster scene and toe tags for identification. responding and assisting local medical examiners and local emergency management agencies in managing the identification and the return of human remains to their loved ones following a mass fatality incident.” The organization is a coalition of the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), Office of Public Health Preparedness (OPHP) and the Michigan Funeral Director Association (MFDA). Michigan is divided into eight emergency regions. Manistee falls into region seven, which roughly covers the top of Michigan’s mitt. The mortuary trailer would cover that entire region.
