With warm weather and family events, the Fourth of July in Manistee County canbe a fun time with great memories. Butbefore your family celebrates, make sureeveryone knows about fireworks safety.
If not handled properly, fireworks cancause burn and eye injuries in kids andadults.
The best way to protect your family isnot to use any fireworks at home period.Attend public fireworks displays, and leavethe lighting to the professionals.
Lighting fireworks at home isnt evenlegal in many areas, so if you still want touse them, be sure to check with your localpolice department first. If theyre legalwhere you live, keep these safety tips inmind:
Kids should never play with fireworks.Things like firecrackers, rockets, and spar-klers are just too dangerous. If you givekids sparklers, make sure they keep themoutside and away from the face, cloth-ing, and hair. Sparklers can reach 1,800degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to meltgold.
Buy only legal fireworks (legal fireworkshave a label with the manufacturers nameand directions; illegal ones are unlabeled),and store them in a cool, dry place. Illegalfireworks usually go by the names M-80,M100, blockbuster, or quarterpounder. These explosives were banned in 1966, butstill account for many fireworks injuries.
Never try to make your own fireworks.Always use fireworks outside and have
a bucket of water and a hose nearby in caseof accidents.
Steer clear of others fireworks havebeen known to backfire or shoot off in thewrong direction. Never throw or point fire-works at someone, even in jest.
Dont hold fireworks in your hand orhave any part of your body over them whilelighting. Wear some sort of eye protection, and avoid carrying fireworks in your pock-et the friction could set them off.
Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush and leaves andflammable substances. The National FireProtection Association estimates that localfire departments respond to more 50,000fires caused by fireworks each year.
Light one firework at a time (not in
glass or metal containers), and neverrelight a dud.Dont allow kids to pick up pieces of
fireworks after an event. Some may still beignited and can explode at any time.
Soak all fireworks in a bucket of waterbefore throwing them in the trash can.
Think about your pet. Animals havesensitive ears and can be extremely fright-ened or stressed on the Fourth of July.Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk thattheyll run loose or get injured.
If a child is injured by fireworks, imme-diately go to a doctor or hospital. If aneye injury occurs, dont allow your childto touch or rub it, as this may cause evenmore damage. Also, dont flush the eye out
with water or attempt to put any ointmenton it. Instead, cut out the bottom of a papercup, place it around the eye, and immedi-ately seek medical attention your childseyesight may depend on it. If its a burn, remove clothing from the burned area andrun cool, not cold, water over the burn (donot use ice). Call your doctor immediately.
Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but youll enjoy them much more knowingyour family is safe. Take extra precautionsthis Fourth of July and your holiday will bea blast!

and they were filling their
water tanks. We were verypatient for the first fiveminutes. The next five gota little more troubling, andthen minutes 10 through20 just about sent me offthe deep end until I real-ized that I might as well
just sit back and start relax-ing. We were, after all, on
vacation.I like to think that I am
a fairly considerate person.I might be wrong, but I liketo think that.
I suppose this is whatgets me extra angry inthese type of situations. Iam pretty sure that I wouldnot occupy a dump stationfor over 20 minutes whilesomeone else was waiting.
Mary and I, while sittingand waiting and eventuallyrelaxing, started thinkingof all the ways this campercould have been filling histank while out of our way.
One big questionthat I often ask myself inthese situations is, whydo I always seem to be inmore of a hurry than other
people. Ive already decidedthat the day is coming
when I am going to totallylose it in the drive-throughat McDonalds. The sixpeople in the car in front ofme are going to be takingminute after minute goingfrom person to persondeciding what to order. Ihave told my friends notto be surprised when I endup in jail after I ease mypickup-up truck up to their
back bumper and then justfloor it, pushing them outof the way and as far as Ipossible can until hitting anobstruction that eventuallystops us.
When I am in a slowbuffet line, once I get to thetable I am motivated to getmy food as quickly as I can.Everyone else, I think, fig-ures that they have waitedthis long to get up to thetable and by gosh they aregoing to darn well take justas much time as the people
before them did. Maybemore.
Our destination last
weekend was WildernessState Park, located about10 miles west of MackinawCity. We had another inter-esting lesson in patiencemidway through the firstday of our stay there. Weneeded to switch fromThursday nights site to theone we would be in Fridayand Saturday. Mary and I
both hoped that whoeverwas in our Friday-Saturdayspot would get up brightand early Friday and depart maybe even before we
got out of bed.We took a look whenwe first got out of bed onFriday, hoping they weregone. No such luck. Themotor home was still inour spot.
Now, really, thisshouldnt have made anydifference because we werein a very nice spot, right
on Lake Michigan not farfrom the spot we weregoing to move into, it was a
beautiful day, and we wererelaxed since we were on
vacation. But, still, we wereanxious to get moved so
wed be set for the remain-der of the stay.
Maybe by 10 a.m. they
would be gone. Nope, didnt happen. How aboutnoon? Still there.
Surely they would begone by 1 p.m. since this ischeck-out time. And, sureenough, at about 12:45 p.m.there did start to be someactivity at our site rugs
being shaken and stufflike that. But 1 p.m. cameand went and they hadntmoved so neither could we.
One thing particularlyrare about this situation isthat for once Mary seemed
to be more impatient me.She was ready to go talk tothe rangers, but I remindedher that technically wedidnt have any right to thespot until the 3 p.m. check-in time. But we agreed thatit was a good idea for her togo to the ranger station andlet them know that we cantobserve the 1 p.m. check-out time because our newsite wasnt available.
Finally, at about 2 p.m.the motor home moved out.Hurray lets get movedso we can start relaxing. But when we took our first
batch of stuff like chairsand bicycles to the site, wediscovered that althoughthe motor home was gone,a car was still at the site, right in the middle of thespot where our trailer
would go.So we sat and waited.
One of the nearby camperssaid that the woman who
was camping at the site wasnot leaving the park, justmoving to another site. Hepointed to where it was and
I volunteered to go tell herthat we would appreciate itif she could move her car so
we could get into our spot. So, I rode my bike to
her new campsite and shewas nowhere to be found.
The whole idea ofbeing at a campground isto spend a couple of daysdoing nothing and cer-tainly we could accomplishthis in site 81 just as well asin site 88. We didnt go offthe deep end and get reallymad at this woman whomight well have been doingthis just to get under ourskin. But, we could certain-ly have been more patientthan we were.
Most likely it nevercrossed the womans mindthat someone else might be
wanting to move into thesite she was leaving. I liketo think thats case in mostof these situations. Thepeople who take their deartime at the buffet table aredoing it because they dontfeel rushed. They arent try-ing to punish those behind
them. Just like the unsus-pecting people in the carat the McDonalds drive-through that some day Iam going to shove a coupleof blocks down the street. They wont know what hitthem, or why.
I can hear them talkingto the police officers now.
What, there was some-one behind me? I didnteven see that guy beforehe rammed the back of mycar.
I have found that I amnot a very patient person. I
was reminded of this whenmy wife Mary and I wereon a big rush to get to our
vacation spot so we could
relax.It does seems kind of
dumb for someone to be ina rush and get all stressedover getting to the vacationdestination so he or she canrelax, doesnt it?
But, on several occa-sions on this trip I ran intosituations that I found very
frustrating.The first came while we
were still in town, whenwe stopped at OrchardBeach State Park to emptyour trailers holding tanks.
Another trailer was block-ing the dump station. It
belonged to a couple justarriving at Orchard Beach
Patience is a virtue ... that I do not have

Do you have good credit?Having negative items on your credit report, whether accurate or not, will causeyou problems in three areas of your life:
1. Higher Interest Rates- If you have a low credit score you will pay higher interestrates on everything from car loans to home mortgages. That is assuming that you wouldqualify at all.
2. Employment Many companies will run a credit report on you before they will hireyou, especially banks, retail stores or anywhere else that involves cash transactions. These companies view someone with bad credit as being at a higher risk of theft or fraud.
3. Home & Auto Insurance Almost every insurance company will check yourcredit. You will be charged higher premiums if your credit is bad because they see you asmore of a risk for insurance fraud.

BYKEN GRABOWSKI
ASSOCIATE EDITOR
The summer seasonis the time when mostpeoples artistic thoughtscome to the forefront andit is why the Manistee ArtInstitute is gearing up for a
busy couple of months witha series of programs.
This weekend the ArtLives In Manistee willopen at the T. WalterHardy Exhibit Hall ofthe Ramsdell Theatre. Itwill feature artwork fromaround the world that hasbeen collected by area resi-dents.
To me it is going tobe an extremely excit-ing event, said Manistee
Art Institute board chairKerry Schubach. We haveasked the people fromthe greater community tocontribute the use of theirprivate collection. There is
some amazing and fine artthat is owned by people inManistee.
That show opened lastFriday evening to coin-cide with the ManisteeCivic Players/West ShoreCommunity College pro-duction of Oklahoma!that will be playing in theRamsdell Theatre. The
show will run July 1 and2 from 1 to 8:30 p.m. andJuly 3 and 4 from 1 to 5p.m.
Schubach said they arekeeping private who ownsthe pieces of artwork andthat they will be displayed
just with information on
the artist and the name ofthe piece.
We will not let peopleknow where the artworkcame from during theexhibit because we knowthere are some valuablepieces, said Schubach. Nonames of the owners will
be published and we aretrying to do something herethat represents a big-timeexhibit.
Many pieces of artworkhave unique stories behindthem, or how they came
to the person who owns it.Sometime rare pieces arefound in garage sales andthings of that nature, so
Schubach said they planto have a little bit of thepieces history alongside
where it is exhibited. What we are asking
is for everyone who letsus show the artwork theyown to give us some detailsabout it, and the artist.
When you look at that littlestory behind it is when itcomes to life. It just isntthe aesthetic part or theartwork, but the humanpart of it as well.
Schubach said local res-idents will probably noticeover the upcoming weeksa number of artists paint-ing scenery in the ManisteeCounty area. On July 7through 9 the Art Instituteis inviting Plein Air paint-ers to come and paintscenes in the Manistee, so
easels and paint brusheswill be put in use at manylocations.
On July 9 they will go
down to River Street wherethey will display their
works, said Schubach. Those who are inter-
ested in learning the skillsof Plein Air painting cando so on July 9 and 10
when a workshop will beheld. It will follow with a
mini reception on July 10and Schubach said any-one wanting more detailsshould call the art instituteat (231) 723-2682 or e-mailto: [email protected].
Artist Kirsten Bish isscheduled to hold TheMagic Medium PolymerClay Workshop from 2 to4 p.m. on July 12, 19 and26. This workshop will givepeople the opportunityto learn the many artisticthings are possible to cre-
ate with polymer clay. Bishsaid the class size is limitedand people should register
by calling the art institute.
Other workshops thatare coming up in the nearfuture, but where a datehasnt been set yet are: Unlock your creativ-
ity: A six-week class thatwill start in July to givepeople the opportunity toexplore the world of art
through sculpture. Artful kites: This
is for the young and theyoung-at-heart alike andwill take place over a two-day period that will allowparticipants to producetheir own kites. At theend of the workshop, par-ticipants will gather at a setlocation to try flying theircreations. Painting on cook-
ies: It doesnt get anymorefun than this according toart institute members as
people will have the optionof eating their own artworkwhich can be creative andtasty.
