Principal’s Message Autumn has arrived quickly this year so happy fall to our West Credit families. We have had an action packed start to the 2018-2019 school year and it has proven again to be a great year to be a member of the West Credit community.

West Credit has already had a number of events this year including our Grade 7/8/9 Parent Information Night, Parent-Teacher Interview Night, and our new Regional Skilled Trades Information Night. Events like these make it clear that there’s a lot to be offered when attending West Credit.

For the next big event, we would like to invite parents out to participate in the Parent Involvement Committee’s annual “Get Started” event for School Councils happening on November 14th and being hosted by our awesome school. You can register at http://www.peelschools.org/parents/schoolcouncils/events/Pages/default.aspx. As a result of this awesome opportunity, our regular school council meeting will be moved to the following Wednesday (November 21st).

Our teachers and support staff contin-ue to lead a wide array of clubs and teams. Our Softball Team just finished their season as silver medal winners after a hard loss in the final! We are proud of the progress the boys and girls made on the field this year. The Team Unbreakable Running Club is well underway and training for a 5 km race later in the fall. The Girls’ Basketball Team has recently started up a new season and the Boys’ Volleyball Team is also under way. There are always opportunities for students to get involved through volunteering or through participation in student initiatives like the games club. We encourage all students to get involved in any way they can.

One of the important events this month is Treaties Recognition Week which was introduced in 2016 to honour the importance of treaties and to help Ontarians learn more about treaty rights and treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. This year, Treaties Recognition Week took place from November 5 to 9, 2018. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) has issued 94 Calls to Action, which include calls for schools and communities to teach students about Treaties. Addressing the TRC’s Calls to Action are embedded in Peel’s commitment to achieve inclusion for all through continuous progress on equity

In addition to the events running at West Credit, the fall is also a time when we honour many of our support staff. During October, we celebrated both Bus Driver appreciation and Teaching Assisstant/Early Childhood Educator appreciation events. In November, the last Friday of the month is Peel Custodial and Maintenance Workers’ Day. On Friday, November 30

th we will take this opportunity to thank the important work of custodial and maintenance

workers and their hard work and commitment to well-being and safety.

In another week of recognitions, the Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Nov. 18 to 24, 2018. Bullying is a relationship problem with relationship solutions. This year, to maintain and build healthy relationships in the Peel District School Board, we ask our Peel community to ‘#chooseACTION to be an Ally’ in their classes, offices, schools, or communities, in order to make these spaces better places for everyone. Establishing and maintaining a positive Climate for Learning and Working requires all of us to actively intervene on assumptions, stereotyping, bias, discrimination and hate. We also must proactively be inclusive, accept others and value difference.

During this week we will be highlighting the importance of allyship for ourselves and others. We will highlight the following qualities and characteristics of allies:

An ally will choose to stand up for what is right - even when it’s hard.

An ally will change the world - for marginalized communities.

An ally will stand - beside, in front, or behind someone to support them.

An ally will commit to un-learning - a history that is incomplete.

An ally will actively learn - about people who are different from them.

An ally will challenge stereotypes - to prevent discrimination and injustice.

An ally will refuse to stay silent - and use their voice to help others.

An ally will use their power and privilege - to help others feel included.

We would like to hear about the big and small actions, pledges, promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you take a moment to share your #chooseACTION to be an Ally moments on social media.

Hospitality Our Hospitality students are already living up to the fantastic reputation they have so wonderfully earned. Guided by Ms. Z and our Baking Teachers, Ms. Burnside, Mr. Massara, and Mr. Rebelo, our students have already catered more than 10 events. We baked for the Bus Driver & E.R.F. Appreciation Days, the Grade 9 Information Evening, Grade 7 & 8 Program & Parent Evening, the Parent/Teacher Interview Evening along with sweets for Commencement and Awards ceremonies at Stephen Lewis Secondary School which has translated into more than 20 trays of Sweets!! A Buffet Luncheon for Peel District School Board educators visiting our school called ‘Get Connected’ was served during September. At the beginning of October we had a special plated service for 16 VIP guests in the Bistro serving a Salad of Fresh Tomatoes from our Horticulture Program with Bocconcini Cheese and Balsamic Reduction, Grilled Mahi Mahi Fish and Portobello Mushrooms, and a homemade Coconut Mango Ice for dessert.

The cafeteria servery is decorated by Mr. Horn’s classes for Halloween as this is being written and each day we serve a variety of healthy dishes for usually under $5 each day with the help of our amazing food service assistants. For Halloween we had Scary Grilled Calamari and Sweet Potato Fries, Crazy Chicken Kiev and recently we had Shawarma! Check out the photo with some of our students gaining their 40 Hours of Community Service at lunch.

In the middle of October West Credit launched the Peel Regional Skills Program with an evening of Trades Colleges and Unions presenting their program and post-secondary opportunities. While the Chef from Niagara College demonstrated cake decoration techniques, Mr. Horn gave tours and samples of some of our products such as mini Beef Wellingtons, Samosas, Spanakopita, and assorted cheese and chicken roll ups.

Coming up in November we are hosting 250 members of the Parent Councils for Peel at a large buffet dinner. Mr. Warr will be joining us as we prepare everything from the chicken to the individual fruit pies. The following week will be the very popular Try-a-Trade where 120 middle school students will be visiting and learning to make pizzas which they will eat for lunch! To remind everyone that events like this cannot happen without our many hands to make it work … more than 50 students sign up to help host the Shop Class rotations, and act as Ambassadors to guide our guests around the building. On November 22, Mr. Gillespie (who has also joined our Hospitality Department

this semester) and Mr. Horn are pooling their SHSM programs money for an epic trip to Guelph! Mr. Horn and the SHSM Hospitality students will tour the University of Guelph to learn about the food service operations that serve the whole campus as well as banquet halls seating thousands of guests. Mr. Gillespie will be leading a SHSM Construction trip to Guelph to tour Barzotti’s and McGregor’s cabinet making venues. Ms. Beitz will be joining us on the bus with three students for the Skills Ontario Young Women’s Career Exploration Event at the Linamar plant in Guelph. Our Grade 11 SHSM students took their First Aid/CPR training at the beginning of October. Our Grade 12 SHSM students will be writing their Peel Food Handlers’ Certification and Smart Serve Certification in December. We would like to thank the Staff, Students and Administration Team at West Credit for their continued support of our lunch servery and catering services, we cannot provide our program without you!! Sincerely, Ms. Burnside, Mr. Gillespie, Mr. Horn, Mr. Massara, and Mr. Rebelo

Childcare West Credit child care is off to an exciting start. We opened in early September welcoming 14 preschool children, and expect to grow throughout the semester. We are offering both a.m. and p.m. sessions on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Mrs. Kasliwal and Ms. Judges would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Gladys Palacios, our amazing RECE, she joins us with much experience in both a preschool room and a kindergarten classroom in Peel. We’d like to also welcome back Christa Tyler our Peel Inclusion Resource consultant. PIRS is a partnership between resourcing programs and licensed child care providers that offer services to families and children with special needs before they start school.

This term the children have enjoyed a Terry Fox walk, nature walks, fall themed crafts, pumpkin painting, birthday parties, trick or treating throughout the school, and daily music and dance activities. Stay connected with us on Instagram or www.westcreditchildcarecentre.com and stay tuned next semester as the excitement continues. Spaces for both the morning and afternoon sessions remain available. Please share our registration information with your neighbours, colleagues, and friends 905-858-3087x209.

Panther Athletics

Congratulations to the West Credit softball team who, under the direction of Mr.

Nunes, Ms. McIntyre, Mr. Arnott, Mr. Abdilla, and Mr. Angeja had a very exciting

season earning a silver medal in a hard fought championship tournament. Our

school Bocce Ball team was unfortunately rained out on tournament day but did

take on our staff in a fun afternoon of competition. As fall turns into winter, our

boys volleyball team and girls basketball team are taking shape. With try-outs

well under way and season openers just around the corner, we wish all our

athletes and coaches the best of luck. Go Panthers! We are looking forward to

another exciting year of competition.
