Art With a PunchUshio Shinohara is an 80 year old
Japanese artist. What makes Shinohara’sart so unique is his signature “boxingpaintings.” He dips his boxing gloves inpaint and punches the canvas in aperformance that results in beautifulworks of art now on display in manymuseums, including the Museum ofContemporary Art in Los Angeles. If yousearch the internet for Shinohara, youcan watch videos of his artisticperformances. You will witness the joyand enthusiasm in Shinohara as heworks, and that of the crowds who gatherto watch.
Rachel Witt, Art ProgrammingCoordinator, discovered his videos andwas inspired to recreate that feeling withWestminster’s Rock Steady Boxers. Sheshared, “There is apparent joy when youwatch him paint with boxing gloves.”
Rachel enlisted the help ofChloe Hough, Rock Steady BoxingCoach and Wellness CenterCoordinator. Boxers from each ofthe class levels were invited toparticipate in the programproperly named “Art with aPunch.” Just as Shinohara dippedhis gloves in paint, these boxersalso dipped boxing gloves intotheir choice of paint colors. Eachboxer stepped up to the canvas tothrow a variety of punches leavingbehind unique and beautiful paintsplatters. Chloe noted, “We try toget together as a group outside ofclass as often as we can. With anopportunity to create a piece ofreally cool, original art work likethis, it gave our boxers theopportunity to participate in anactivity they never thought theywould do.”
Rachel put the finishingtouches on the painting and itnow hangs proudly on the wallleading to the group exercise roomwhere the Rock Steady boxerswork to combat Parkinson’sdisease every day. The vibrantcolors and paint splatters ondisplay serve as a daily reminderof the energy and exuberance thatthese boxers bring to their fighteach and every day.

Haan Museum OutingFor our monthly outing in March,
we attended the Quilt Exhibition atthe Haan Museum and learned aboutquilts from the 1800s and 1900s, aswell as the history behind theHaan home.
One highlight of the trip was seeinga quilt that JoAnn Lehe had helped tostitch. It was great to see one of ourown resident’s work at the museum!
Franklin Moore took a lot of photoswhile we toured the Museum. Afterour tour was complete, he enjoyedsitting in all of the different chairs inthe museum, especially one thatresembled a throne.

Winged Wartime HeroesAs part of the U.S. Army Pigeon
Service, homing pigeons provided avital service during World War I andWorld War II. These specially trainedmessengers took on lofty missions andsaved thousands of lives.
Their intelligence, speed and homingability made carrier pigeons a provencommunication tool. In 1917, at therequest of Gen. John J. Pershing, apigeon unit of the Army Signal Corpswas created. During World War I,600 of the birds were used, and over90 percent of the messages sent bypigeons were received.
World War II saw the peak of thewinged force, with 56,000 pigeonsmanaged by 150 officers and3,000 enlisted men. The birds werebred and trained to travel far and fast, flying up to 600 miles at about40 mph, even under fire, at night andover open water. They courieredmessages encased in small tubes ontheir legs or pouches looped overtheir backs. They also parachutedwith troops.
With colorful names such as GI Joe,Cher Ami and Thunderbird, severalpigeons became famous for theirheroics and were awarded medalsfor valor.
After advances in technology, thePigeon Service ended in 1957, and theveteran birds found homes in zoos orwere sold to the public.
