Guide him/her to think through possible solutions to solve the issue
Intelligence is NOT fixed
Effort activates ability
Failures and mistakes are part of learning
Challenges help me to be better
I can’t do it YET
1. Praise the process and effort
Say: “You tried very hard.” “This is a creative way to attempt to solve the problem.”
Say:
“You can’t do it YET.”
“You don’t know it YET.”
“But if you learn and practice, you CAN!”
2. The Power of “Not Yet”
Say: “You can learn from your mistakes.”“Mistakes help you improve.” “Let’s see what other strategies you can try.”
Ask:“What did you try hard at today?”
3. Failures and mistakes = LEARNING
Goals should be SMART Goals
Identify the goal and write it down
List the tasks needed to obtain the goal
Start working on the activities/tasks to achieve the goal
Monitor whether the tasks have been completed
When all of the tasks are complete, determine if the goal has been met. If so, create the next goal. If not, revise the goal and strategies.
