Malala Yousafzai. Greta Thunberg. Emma Watson. BTS. These people have one thing in common – they are activists championing a cause and trying to make the world a better place. Crucially, they are also individuals who are knowledgeable of the social, cultural, political, and environmental problems that plague our world today and have translated this knowledge into action. Without awareness and critical thinking, one will be but an empty vessel making loud, meaningless noises.

At YIJC, General Paper and Project Work are our compulsory Knowledge Skills subjects. We aim to equip you with awareness and knowledge, and develop your critical thinking and communication skills so that you can be a thought leader in your own community. May your thoughts be critical and discerning, your speech tempered with reason and articulated with confidence, and your actions motivated by empathy for the less privileged!

General Paper

Project Work

General Paper aims to develop in students the ability to think critically, to construct cogent arguments and to communicate ideas using clear, accurate and effective language. At YIJC, students are guided in lectures and tutorials to explore key issues of global and local significance. This gives them a strong foundation to thrive in a fast-changing world. Current affairs and popular culture familiar to students are used to help students engage with complex subjects and they are encouraged to specialise in topics that interest them in preparation for the A-level examinations.

For more information on the syllabus and scheme of assessment, please click here.

At the outset of their projects, students are empowered to identify and determine the real-world problem they want to engage with. They hone their research skills, immersing themselves in the process of gathering, processing, synthesising and applying knowledge from various fields. Students also develop empathy for their target community, articulate and define problems, and find potential solutions for real-world issues. At the end of the day, students will hone collaborative, communication, and digital skills as they work together in groups to present their ideas through ICT infographic and animation tools.

ENGLISHLiterature

“Poetry can be our underground bunker, a refuge from the surface of everyday life in which the urgent crowds out the important. Poetry’s ability to look at old things with fresh eyes is a key tool towards the examined life. It reconfigures the familiar […] and helps us look askance at the contours of our over-busy daily existence. In poetry we listen to ourselves, like a secular form of prayer. And the more we return to it the deeper we go, for we, like a good poem, do not deliver up all our secrets at a single reading.”

Paul Vallely’s “Why Poetry is as Essential as Air”

Studying Literature is visceral as it is intellectual. Embark on a sensory and stimulating journey here at YIJC as you learn to better appreciate the beauty of the written word.

For 2020/2021, YIJC will read the following papers and texts:

MATHEMATICS & ComputingWe live in a universe made up of patterns. At YIJC, Mathematics and Computing are taught so as to empower you to recognise patterns, decompose them, represent data, and generalise logical solutions. We focus on authentic problem solving and getting students to collaborate and generate solutions to real-world problems. We believe in cultivating computational thinkers and effective problem solvers, and not calculators or mere coders!

Mathematics

Computing

At YIJC, an active learning approach is adopted in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. Students are encouraged to think critically and work collaboratively. There are also varied formative assessments with prompt feedback to facilitate learning. To nurture self-directed learners, the department uses the flipped classroom approach for selected topics. We also tap on ICT tools to enhance the learning experience. Our YIJC Mathematics Google site offers you access to a wide range of learning materials such as instructional videos, applets, and quizzes – all of which are just a click away!

Interested in studying Mathematics at a deeper level? Our college offers H3 Mathematics and Further Mathematics too! For more information on the Mathematics syllabus, you may refer to the following links: H1 Mathematics H2 Mathematics H2 Further Mathematics

YIJC is one of the few Junior Colleges in Singapore that offer Computing as a H2 ‘A’ level subject. Computing focuses on problem solving and computational thinking, and the subject provides a good foundation for further study in computing related disciplines. Here at YIJC, we believe in empowering students to be self-directed learners. We provide lecture videos, lecture training, and tutorials on the gamified online learning platform, Coursemology. Students can also obtain immediate feedback on their learning and clarify their doubts via this platform. In addition, our college offers opportunities for authentic and collaborative learning with mini projects, learning journeys, and competitions. “Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”

John F. Kennedy

At YIJC, our Physical Education (PE) department aims to keep you healthy and strong so that you can always perform to the best of your abilities! We heavily emphasise functional training and with an exciting variety of PE modules, you will definitely find yourself more active, healthier, and graduating with a myriad of skill sets.

Also, if you have the impression that PE is about keeping your phones aside and sweating under the hot sun, think again. At YIJC, Information & Communications Technology is used in our PE lessons to improve students’ skills and increase their confidence in sports participation.

With other PE-related events like King of the Arena that requires students to overcome challenging obstacles, and King of the Streets that gives students a chance to participate in street sports, we can assure you that there is never a dull moment here!

King of the Arena (KOTA) and King of the Streets (KOTS) emphasise holistic well-being and they pit the houses against each other in a bid to clinch the overall champion trophy. In KOTA, students work in teams to complete obstacles in the fastest time possible. Some of these obstacles involve flipping and dragging huge tyres and completing many waves of the battle ropes! These obstacles not only test the students’ physical and psychological limits but also strengthen the bond between teammates as they motivate each other to complete the race. In KOTS, students compete in street versions of popular sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, Handball, and Netball. The games are modified to promote inclusivity and engagement of everyone participating. Students not only participate in the games but they also take on roles as organisers. Students are trained as referees, statisticians, logistics managers and event chairpersons. It is truly an event for students by students!

DIGITAL Literacies

44

As the Centre of Excellence for Digital Literacies, YIJC boasts a forward-looking Digital Literacies programme that seeks to empower youth with the capacities for the future workplace. Given the role of technology as a key driver shaping tech and non-tech industries, it is critical that young leaders of the future possess a macro appreciation of the potential of digital media and smart technologies.

Adopting a tiered approach catering to the college population and specific groups with different interests and needs, the college prepares YIJCians for the 21st-century workplace through:

• A pervasive culture of digital productivity and effective ICT-enabled pedagogies to support collaboration.

• Opportunities to develop digital media communications and digital innovation skills.

• Grounding in digital literacy, values and safety.

YIJC works closely with strategic partners such as the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Media Literacy Council (MLC) in digital literacy education, and in organising national events.

Students who wish to acquire more advanced technological competencies can choose to join the Makers’ Academy, a specialised CCA that hones their media, computational and innovation skills. Makers’ Academy students experience digital making, app development as well as photography and filmmaking, working with cutting-edge technology and equipment in our various specialised venues such as the CoLab.
