Welcome to the Dojo

Dojo is a Japanese word meaning “Place of The Way,” or a place of learning. Tradition-ally, a dojo is used as a training facility for martial arts. More recently, this term has been used to describe a dedicated location for physical, hands-on workplace training.

The concept of a training dojo is not new to the manufacturing world. Large facilities like Toyota and GM have already adopted dojos into their training struc-ture.

“It is a global concept,” said Safety Manager Dan Carpenter, “and it’s not new to DENSO. Dojo stations are already in place in Japan and Tennessee. Your dojo team visited these estab-lished dojos and brought the concept back to DMMI.”

The dojo at DMMI has specific stations for safety and environ-mental processes. Topics include: • Hidden dangers• Rollers and spinning shafts• Chain and belt drives• Energy and CO2• Recycling• Residual pressure (stored energy) and• Storm water and waste water

There is a focus on following 3S for safe machine entry and the hazards of residual air pressure. Associates will experience real-life situations, all within a safe and controlled environment.

“Your dojo is spiced with a little DMMI flavor,” said Dan. “The stations here are designed to be similar to what you will experience in our plant.”

The Safety and Environmental Dojo has already been adopted into the new employee orienta-tion. In the next few months, all DMMI associates, temporaries, and contractors will be scheduled by their supervisors to join a training session.

See you at the Dojo!

Check your Pay Check!

Common EARNINGS Categories

It’s the start of a new year and a great time to make sure your paycheck is correct. Here is a refresher on how to interpret the codes on your paycheck.

Left side: Your EarningsYour earnings are broken down by type of pay: reg-

ular, overtime, vacation, paid holidays, etc. The first two columns (Hours / Current) show the hours and dollar amounts paid to you this pay period. The next two columns (Hours / YTD) show the total number of hours and dollars paid to you this year.

Right side: Your DeductionsThe right side gives you the amounts taken out of

your check this period (Current), as well as the total amount taken out this year (YTD).

See the sample paycheck stub for an explanation of the codes that appear on DENSO checks. You will not see all of these codes on your check; different people have different earnings and deductions.

Find an Error? Let Us KnowBe sure to check your most recent paycheck and

review your benefit deductions to ensure your contri-butions for medical, dental, and/or vision are correct. Do you have a 401(k) loan? Now is a good time to verify that your loan deductions are coming out of your check. If any of your deductions are missing or incorrect, contact the Benefits Department by the end of January.

How to Check your Hourly RateThe rate listed on the top of your paycheck is your

monthly rate. Here’s how to manually calculate your hourly rate:(Monthly Rate x 12) / 2,080 = Hourly Rate

(Multiply your monthly rate by 12 months in a year, then divide by 2,080--the number of regular work hours in a year.)
