Because of its warm micro-climate, the parks and gardens are a delight with their palms and subtropical plants. This fascinating flora does not stop at the water’s edge though, as the English Riviera supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife including corals and seahorses.

There is an enormous amount to do in the region and we have tried to summarise as much as possible to give you a flavour of what life might be like living here. If you are already local to Torbay, we hope you will discover something new.

Originally a Celtic settlement, parts of Paignton can be found in the Domesday Book. It grew as a small fishing village and became a popular seaside resort during Victorian times. Some of the Victorian architecture remains to this day with Winner Street, Church Street and Palace Avenue containing some splendid examples of this.

The railway line was first opened to passengers in 1859. This formed transport links with Torquay and London. Since the 13th century, Paignton has become a hot spot for people wanting to eat the well-known Paignton Pudding. There have been various events since the pudding was first baked – do keep an eye out for the next one!

Paignton’s bustling town centre stretches from the tourist and gift shops of Torbay Road to the main precinct which boasts a wide range of independent and high street stores. There are numerous restaurants, cafés and tea rooms to suit all pockets and palates. However, if you are looking for a larger town centre with a comprehensive range of national chains, upmarket stores, budget retailers as well as many independent stores then Torquay is only three miles away.

There are a range of restaurants in and around Paignton but one to look out for is TJ’s. The restaurant boasts fantastic views of the picturesque Paignton Harbour and is a fantastic place to end the day and watch the sunset.

Paignton Harbour was built in 1847 and lies on the western shores of Torbay, mid-way between Torquay and Brixham. Paignton was a thriving fishing harbour for generations and many of the old seamanship traditions still survive. Today it has an authentic ‘fishing harbour feel’ and remains a hive of activity.

Towards Torquay, and only a short walk from the seafront at Livermead, you will find the picturesque thatched medieval village of Cockington. It boasts an historic forge, picture-postcard cottages, horse and carriage rides, an historic court and church, tea rooms, thatched pub, lake and woodland walks.

At the centre of Paignton’s long sandy beach is the pier. It is now up to date with amusements and entertainment for the whole family. See the fantastic views of the bay (and sometimes dolphins) from the end of the pier. There are also shops selling seafood, handmade fudge and ice-creams.
