The general information.• Oxford is a city in central southern England, the home of the

university of Oxford. The city is the county city of Oxfordshire, and forms a district within the county. It lies about 50 miles (80 km) north-west of London. The rivers Cherwell and Thames (also sometimes known as the Isis locally) run through Oxford and meet south of the city centre.

• Oxford has a diverse economic base. Its industries include motor manufacturing, publishing and a large number of information technology and science-based businesses.

• Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous all over the world for its university and historical places. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established city. Although people are known to have lived in this area for thousands of years.

• Oxford buildings demonstrate an example of every English architectural period since the arrival of the Saxons, including the iconic, mid-18th century Radcliffe Camera. Oxford is known as “The City of Dreaming Spires", a term coined by poet Matthew Arnold in reference to the harmonious architecture of Oxford's university buildings. The university of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

About sightsThe greatest college in Oxford is the college ofChurch of the Christ, and it often names the mostbeautiful. The college cathedral is opened all year,except Christmas, here again it is possible to look atthe magnificent stained-glass windows tellinghistory of a life of the founders of church of theChrist, St. Frideswide. The college is the setting for parts of EvelynWaugh's Brideshead Revisited, as well as LewisCarroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

• More recently the college of Church of the Christ has been used while shooting the film “Harry Potter” based on the book by J. K. Rowling and also the film adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel “Northern Lights” (the film bearing the title of the US edition of the book “The Golden Compass”).

Modern sights of Oxford• Nowadays, the city is a bustling

cosmopolitan city. Still with its ancient university, but home also to a growing hi-tech community. Many businesses are located in and around the town, whether on one of the Science and Business Parks or within one of a number of residential areas.

• The Oxford university is the oldest in the English-speaking world, known as the international educational and research centre. The university structure includes 39 homing colleges.

• Oxford has numerous major tourist attractions, many belonging to the university and colleges. As well as several famous institutions, the city centre is home to Carfax Tower and a historical themed ride, the Oxford Story. In the summer, punting on the Thames (sometimes called the Isis as it flows through Oxford) and the Cherwell is popular.
