This young German quartet are taking the chamber music world by storm. Playing from memory (and standing, the cellist apart), their thrilling dynamism and total commitment is winning them plaudits around the world. The Bartók-like energy of Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s early quartet is an ideal vehicle for the Vision Quartet’s virtuosity and they close with Beethoven’s great A minor quartet, whose famous “song of thanksgiving to God” at its centre is one of the most profoundly moving movements in all chamber music.

At 26, Edinburgh-born Sean Shibe is already recognised as one of the leading guitarists of his generation. The first guitarist to be selected as a Radio 3 New Generation Artist, his recent solo CD was Gramophone magazine’s ‘Editor’s Choice’. This programme demonstrates the huge range of colours he can conjure from his instrument, from Jacobean lute music to the vibrant Spanish music of Mompou via Bach and Australian composer Brett Dean.

Genius, a term which should rarely be applied to performing musicians, but at 25 he has it.

The outstanding Azerbaijani cellist Jamal Aliyev won last year’s Young Concert Artists’ Trust competition at London’s Wigmore Hall and also made his debut at the BBC Proms. The intense passion and verve of his playing are reflected in his choice of richly Romantic music in this exciting programme.

NAVARRA STRING QUARTET

Peteris Vasks String Quartet No 4Ravel String Quartet in F majorSchubert String Quartet in D minor Death and the Maiden

The Navarras are one of Britain’s most respected string quartets, admired for the combination of elegance and dramatic flair that characterises their performances. Both are qualities that will be very much to the fore in the Mediterranean warmth of Ravel’s quartet and the breathtaking emotional roller coaster of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden. Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ highly individual music draws on the folk music and winter landscape of his country but also reflects the influence of Shostakovich.

…their sound was one of very mature instrumental mastery. The players showed with precision and firmness the joyful mixture of intimacy and openness.

Adam Walker’s last appearance here is still remembered as one of the most sensational displays of instrumental brilliance we have ever experienced, and we expect more of the same! A BBC Young Musician finalist at 16, he became Principal Flute in the London Symphony Orchestra aged only 21 and is now in demand as soloist with leading orchestras, described by Classic FM as ‘one of the top 5 international flautists’. This delightful programme reaches its climax in an arrangement of César Franck’s famous Violin Sonata.

Walker, playing with staggering virtuosity and charm, kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout, and brought the house down at the end.

Described by The Guardian as a ‘fast-rising British talent’ and featured as a ‘rising star’ in BBC Music Magazine, award-winning mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley sings on concert, opera and recital stages in the UK and internationally, from English National Opera and the Wigmore Hall to Vienna’s Musikverein. She and Emma Abbate perform Schumann’s great Frauenliebe und –leben as the centre-piece of this delectable selection of songs.

….delivered with a superbly placed sense of drama…she was right under the skin of the character in Schumann’s evergreen Frauenliebe und -Leben, using her endlessly pliable voice to maximum effect.

CONSONE QUARTET

Boccherini String Quartet in F minor Op 26 No 6Mendelssohn String Quartet in E flat Op 12 Boccherini String Quartet in G minor Op 26 No 2 Beethoven String Quartet in E flat Op 74 Harp

This young London-based, prize-winning ensemble are already developing a high profile for their dedication to exploring the Classical and early Romantic string quartet repertoire on period instruments. Haydn’s contemporary Boccherini was incredibly prolific, composing nearly 100 string quartets, but his music is unfailingly inventive and the two short quartets here are no exception. Mendelssohn’s Beethoven-influenced early quartet and Beethoven’s magnificent ‘Harp’ quartet complete a mouth-watering programme.

FRIDAY AFTERNOONSEast Dunbartonshire Children’s ChorusChildren from ED Primary SchoolsEast Dunbartonshire Young Musicians McOpera Ensemble

Benjamin Britten: Friday Afternoons (1935)plus instrumental music by Britten, Holst and others

In 1935, Britten wrote his delightful Friday Afternoons, children’s songs for the school where his brother was headmaster. Since the Britten Centenary in 2013, these songs have been the catalyst for a wonderful international initiative encouraging young people to sing. Thousands of children, not just in Britain but across the globe, have learned the songs and been inspired to create new ones of their own. Our own East Dunbartonshire Young Musicians 2019 project culminates in this concert, bringing together local children, talented young instrumentalists and the professionals of McOpera performing some of Britten’s songs, a new song composed for the occasion, and music for strings by Britten, Holst and others. A joyous closing event for our 2018-19 season.
