Smithtown High School: Oceans (usually 11th graders)

and Marine Ecology (usually 12th graders)

Passing Earth Science And Living Environment (Bio) are Prerequisites for both courses

Oceans is not a prerequisite for Marine Ecology

College Credit

Both Oceans and Marine Ecology can be taken for college credit through SUNY Stony

Brook, no matter where or if you plan to attend college.

Prerequisite is a B average, payment made on time, and timely completion of all

required admissions paperwork.

This will be discussed over the next few weeks.

Daily Expectations-Be on time, prepared for class (folder, pen, pencil)Note: Students are required to abide by SHS Code

of Conduct at all times, but these few will be strictly enforced:

-Refrain from eating/drinking in the classroom. It’s the rule for science rooms. If you don’t have lunch, see me-I can help you.

-Refrain from the use electronic devices, and put earpieces away (i.e. in your backpack) before class.

-Absences for any reason MUST be accompanied by a note from home or they are considered a cut.

“Early Points”“Early Points” are the reason I don’t give a big

extra credit project every quarter – you shouldn’t need one!

With a little effort, students can take advantage of Early Points all the time & move up from a C+ to a B-, for example.

Almost any assignment we do has a point value that can be increased if the assignment is completed correctly and it is turned in early.

Note: it would be silly to leave part of an assignment blank just to turn it in for early points, so don’t expect any for cruddy work

1st Day Homework1st Homework-Due by Monday for full credit-5 points,

earlier for Early Points-up to 10 points depending on how early (i.e. today=10 points, tomorrow=8, etc.)

1) Get a folder that is designated as just for Oceans and show it to me (5-10 pts).

2) After reading over your blue oceans brochure and safety/contact sheets with your parents, sign and have

your parents sign in the appropriate locations then return to me (5-10 pts).

3) Show me that you have the name and phone number of your make-up partner on something that you’ll

always have with you (5-10 pts).

1st Day Homework Continued

• Bring a # 2 Pencil and if you have any modifications, be prepared to tell me what they are and who your resource room teacher is.

• You will have your first test tomorrow to show me what your background is in marine sciences.

• Don’t worry about trying to study-this is just to see where you are.

• But do take it seriously. If you do well, it will get you out of a major homework assignment later.
