Leesburg: Kids’ College 2018Acting: Bad to the Bone Bring on the Bad Guys: Villains, Witches & Evil Queens in theatre movies and literature. Sometimes it’s good to be bad, in stories anyway. This class takes an in-depth look at the creations of classic, modern, and personally created villains. Learn and explore the laugh, the look, the walk, the talk and then get the chance to act them out! Instructor: Kaitlin Baxter

Acting: Excitement of Musical TheatreDo you dream of being a star on Broadway? This class will teach you what it takes to be a professional performer. Learn the hip, hooray, and ballyhoo of 42nd Street. Perform scenes and songs, study the techniques used in auditions, and become skilled with stage directions and movement. At the end of the class, perform in a musical theatre variety show, filled with singing, dancing, and acting. All new material for 2018! Instructor: Kaitlin Baxter

Acting: Improvisation Grades 4-9Did you know that some actors don’t even use scripts? Instead they make it up on the spot using their imagination! Come play games, have a laugh, and learn a technique that’s useful both inside and outside of theatre. Every day will be something new. Instructor: Kaitlin Baxter

Acting: Technical Theatre Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a theatrical production? What goes on backstage? How do directors create a show? Explore shoe-box set dioramas, colored lighting effects, costumes, make-up and sound effects as you learn about the technical side of theatre. Put on a puppet theatre presentation using all the technical elements you create. Instructor: Marni Whitehead

Acting: The Wright Stuff Have you ever wanted to write a play? Do you wonder what happens on paper before an actor even picks up a script? How do you create rich characters and fun dialogue? After learning the basics of playwriting, you will write a scene that you and classmates will perform in front of a live audience. Join the fun as you move from author to playwright to actor! Angry Birds Live The survival of the Angry Birds is at stake. Dish out revenge on the greedy pigs who stole their eggs. Use the powers of the birds to destroy the pig’s defenses. Players build a structure and launch an Angry Bird in an attempt to knock it and the pigs down to win points. The popular video game comes to life as players pull back a slingshot loaded with Angry Birds and let them fly at the pigs. Instructor: Kevin Danielson

ArcheryCan you hit the bull’s eye? Go for the gold and win award stickers as you master the basic steps in using a bow and arrow. Students will learn safe shooting techniques. Or with prior experience in Archery, you will improve your archery skills by learning advanced aiming techniques, shooting from greater distances and enjoying challenging new games. The course will end with games including a balloon shoot and an official tournament with award ribbons. Instructor: Cassandra Gamble

Art: 2D Students will use 2D drawing techniques to create artwork to be painted with neon & watercolor paints. Some artworks will be finished using marker or colored pencil. We will also use zentangling to create a doodle style artwork, neon posters, and 3-point perspectives and landscapes. Instructor: Susie Kirkland

Art: Amazing 3DStudents will use sculpture techniques to create realistic large scale Paper Mache artworks or animals/characters/objects. We will also make sculptures using wood and create a string/nail art of with your own name. Instructor: Susie Kirkland

Art: CeramicsStudents will explore hand building techniques of coil, slab and some pinch to create ceramic pieces. We will explore some new materials to enhance our pottery like glimmer stones and glass. We will create up to four take home pieces of art in our short time together. Our special bonus will be a turn at the pottery wheel on our last day together! Bring a spare shirt and come play in the clay with us. Instructor: Susie Kirkland

Art: Doodle Ball Let your creativity flow as you practice creating different doodles, designs and drawings! No artistic skills? No worries! Practicing artist? Come practice some more! Learn and teach others how to create dream doodles, designs, dangles, and tangles! Class finale is a 3-D Doodle Ball! Art doesn’t have to be difficult. Bring an open mind and sharpened pencils! Instructor: Kelly Nadboralski

Art: Star Wars Use the force to find your inner artist. Create galaxies and planets with fun painting techniques. Students will create droid artworks featuring R2-D2 and BB-8, as well as a torn paper Chewbacca. Each student will make a star fleet with space shuttles, for action figures, and Tie and X-Wing fighters from recycled materials. Shadow puppets will allow each artist to act out their favorite battle scene. Instructor: Kristine Minner

Babysitting, Earning and Learning Easy Snacks Grades 5-9As you focus on basic childcare techniques, you will learn how to feed, diaper and bathe a baby. The class will focus on information needed to become a responsible babysitter. You will gain useful tips on how to acquire the necessary information needed from prospective clients. You will also make some nutritious and fun snacks. Instructor: Connie Bame

Basketball Grades 2-6 & Grades 4-9Learn the FUNdamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting a basketball through our daily drills, games and team competitions. Students will be grouped according to age, size, and ability. Coach: Ariel Betancourt

Baton TwirlingHave a fun and exciting time with baton twirling, flag batons, hoops and more. Students will have the opportunity to learn a complete routine and perform in front of an audience, in just eight days! Batons will be provided, or students may order their own baton for $20 at the first class. Come have a blast with our newest tricks and routines! Instructor: Emily Pelton

Board Games/Family FunLong before there was the Xbox or Play Station, even before Nintendo, there were board games to keep kids occupied and entertained. Thankfully, board games have survived the onslaught of computer games and gaming systems. Board games let families and friends spend quality time together to get to know each other. Board games are universal and timeless in their appeal, with each culture creating games to unwind and relax; play and learn how to play different board games with us! Instructor: Chris Baltunis

Leesburg: Kids’ College 2018Bugs, Bugs, Bugs Grades 2-6 Explore the world from a bug’s eye view. Learn about different bugs that you might encounter in different habitats, including your own backyard. Build a bug habitat and find out the role that different bugs play in our lives. Come and join us and learn all about the creepy, crawly things that you encounter in our community. Instructor: Alia Perrone

Building a Miniature Golf Course Grades 3 – 9This is your chance to design a fun, challenging, and exciting putt-putt golf course that every kid would want to play. You will work with a team to design and build the ultimate golf course hole made of recycled materials. When the course is built, we will play a miniature golf tournament with prizes for the best design and top scoring golfers. Please collect a bag full of recyclable cardboard, plastic soda bottles, and other items that would make good obstacles in your course. Instructor: Marni Whitehead

Chemical Attraction Grades 2-6 & Grades 5-9Explore some of the simple chemical reactions that occur in our everyday lives. Investigate chemical reactions that take place in our kitchens, our yards and our environment. Perform exciting experiments to investigate how these interactions can help us in our daily experiences. We will create crystals; make rock candy, lava lamps, and silly putty. Watch fireworks in milk and clouds in bottles. Enjoy these treats and many more in our adventures! Instructor: Alia Perrone

ChessChess is truly the world-wide board game. Learn the basic moves and strategies of this game that never grows old. There will be plenty of practice and play time. Instructor: Chris Baltunis

Computer Movie Maker Grades 2-6 & Grades 4-9Using the free Windows Movie Maker, you will learn to import photos, videos and audio to create your own movies. Then you will enhance them with effects, transitions and themes for your own wonderfully creative production. Digital pictures are required and can be brought in using cameras, phones, USB drives or retrieved from the Internet or cloud storage. Instructor: Jordan Ritter

Computers, Design a Game World Grades 5–9Week 1: Working in teams, the students will create a video game through storyboards and computer programs. With help from the Internet, they will design characters and landscapes. They will then present their games to the Board of Directors (the class) who will determine the best game presented. Week 2: The student will create their own personal game through the use of a software program. The program and games created by them and their fellow students will be made available to take home at the final session. Instructor: Kevin Von Maxey

Cool Paper Crafts Students will create art projects and crafts made from paper. Activities will include Origami, Quilling, paper mosaic, pop-up cards, envelope books, 3D forms, paper masks & paper airplanes. Come experience all the fun ways to “play” with paper. Instructor: Kristine Minner

Creative Play: Imaginations Run Wild! Come take a journey into your own creative mind where our imaginations will be unleashed through fun activities such as Who’s Line Is It, Story Pop, What’s Inside You Decide, Grab Bag Writing, and more! The possibilities are endless in this class that will have you creating, writing, and acting! New activities and topics during each session of KC! Instructor: Kelly Nadboralski

Crochet 101 This class will teach basic stitches needed to begin projects such as scarves, pot holders and dish towels. These basic stitches can be used to create larger projects such as wraps, baby blankets and more. Students will need to have their own crochet hook (Size H, I, or J) and one to two skeins of yarn (one worsted weight and one cotton) in colors of their choice. Instructor: Kelly Nadboralski

Dance: Around the World Take a trip around the world through the movement and fun of dance! Explore various cultures and some of their traditional dances in a fresh and kid-friendly way. Learn dances from Ireland, Russia, Africa, South America, and more. At the end of the session, students will put on a recital for family and friends showcasing all they have learned about these cultures and dances. Instructor: Kaitlin Baxter

Dance, Dance, DanceWhile using today’s top 40’s music, students will learn dance steps and moves with rhythmic patterns. This class will be concerned with learning technical dance skills – ballet/lyrical, jazz/hip-hop, and choreography. Students will also learn how to present themselves to an audience and work to strengthen that presentation with different theatrical skills. Expressing oneself through movement is the basis of this class. Instructor: Briana Davis

Edible Math Grades 3-6 Math can be fun but can be even better using food. We will learn about shapes, fractions, area, volume, percentages, measurement, graphing and more using pretzels, chocolate bars, Cheez-its and other food items that we will then get to eat. So come join us and improve what you know about math, have fun creating shapes to learn and enjoy eating the snacks. Instructor: Reiko Alsobrook

Experience Japanese CultureHave you ever wanted to travel to Japan? Well you can, during your visit to Kids College. Learn how to count in Japanese, how to write your name in Japanese, and how to use chopsticks. Also, learn how to transform ordinary paper into amazing animals and objects. You will also learn the Japanese art of calligraphy. Instructor: Reiko Alsobrook

Felt Applique’ & Hand Sewn Crafts Grades 5-9 Students will learn the basics of sewing by hand to include threading a needle, tying knots, basic stitches, and making patterns. Projects will include items such as a mini-tote bag and Christmas stocking made from felt. Instructor: Kristine Minner

Field Day Every Day Are you ready to have lots of fun? “Field Day Every day” is all about having fun, from hippity hop relay to plunger relay. Students will learn how to develop their motor skills better by applying it to the fun games and activities that we will encounter. We also learn what teamwork is by working with others. There will be lots of fun activities each day to help develop teambuilding with one another. Instructor: Cassandra Gamble

Flag FootballThis course is designed to introduce the beginning player to the basic skills and functional responsibilities of each player on a football team. Students will be engaged in small group activities and be taught positions, rules, and technique. Students will practice, develop and apply sport specific skills such as throwing, receiving, ball carrying, punting and flag pulling. While playing games, we will practice offensive and defensive strategies required for successful game play. Instructor: Cassandra Gamble

Leesburg: Kids’ College 2018Full STEAM Ahead Incorporate the arts into your study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with STEAM. Stretch your creativity as you make paper airplanes, manipulate tan grams, put together a jigsaw puzzle, make a space-craft lander and a catapult. Instructor: Marni Whitehead

Game Shows Grades 3-9 Join in on the action! Participate as a game show contestant or team member and compete for prizes. You and your opponent have 60 seconds to complete a challenge, which increases in difficulty as the game progresses. Will you succeed or be eliminated when you play “Minute to Win It”? Are you able to price items, gain points and have the opportunity to pick door number 1, 2, or 3 during the game, “The Price is Right?” Can you or your classmate answer 1st to 5th grade questions in the game of, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” We will also play other games, such as, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”, “Hollywood Game Night”, and “What’s my Line?” Don’t miss this exhilarating experience! Guitar, Beginning Grades 2-6 & Grades 4-9If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to play the guitar, now is your chance to find out! This class is the perfect place to start your musical journey! Learn how to read guitar tablature, play simple melodies, and meet the challenge to strum some guitar chords. This class introduces the basics of guitar playing in a fun group environment. You may bring your own guitar or rent a guitar at www.musicafterschool.org to take home and use in class duringthe 2 week session. Rental guitars will be handed out at the first class. Harry Potter: Game Show Trivia Grades 4–9Grab your parchment and quills for the Harry Potter edition of a Kids’ College favorite … Game Show Trivia! In this class, students will play a variety of quiz style games based completely on the Harry Potter book series. Students will compete in houses for house points and a house cup will be awarded on the last day. Of course, not all of the games are brain games … it would not be a Harry Potter experience without Quidditch! Knowledge from all canonical books written by J.K. Rowling is a must. Harry Potter: Prefects in Training, Level IIThis class is designed as a second level Harry Potter course. Heavy emphasis will be placed on the original J.K. Rowling text. Although it is not a requirement, it is strongly recommended that students have read all seven volumes and have taken the Hogwarts class prior to registering for this advanced course. Activities will include character role-playing, intermediate to advanced trivia and lots of in-depth Harry Potter fun. Hero Coliseum Grades 2-5 Do you see yourself as a brave hero? Would you like to show the world how strong and powerful you are? Then Hero Coliseum is the class for you! Through elements of writing, drawing, and some simple math, students will create characters to do battle in the coliseum using dice and other elements. International Artists Grades 4-9 Travel the seven continents through art projects. We will explore the art of Australia, Mexico, Africa, France, Brazil, Antarctica and China. Instructor: Kristine Minner

I Spy a Secret Agent Grades 5-9 Do you have what it takes to be a spy? This fun filled class will teach you many tricks of the trade! Learn about the history of espionage, how psychology plays a part, and spy techniques such as disguise and getaways. Instructor: Susie Kirkland

It’s a Hoot! Grades 2-5 Incorporating children’s books with owl art. Each day we will share a different children’s book and create a unique owl art project. Wax relief paintings, black and white drawings on colored paper, Paper Masks, and Owl sculptures. Instructor: Kristine Minner

Kids in the KitchenA simple introduction to nutritious snacks with an international flair and no cooking involved, this class will teach you about nutrition while students learn to prepare easy “no cook” snacks. Students will be able to eat their creations. Students will participate in other activities such as place setting, table etiquette, napkin folding, and decorative centerpieces. Kindness Rocks! A simple act of kindness that’s making a big impact in communities across the country by brightening the days of strangers – one colorful rock at a time. The concept is easy; paint a rock with an inspiring message or art and leave it out in the community. Students will paint rocks to their design of choice, hide some around campus and take some home as well. No matter what you paint, it will make someone’s day to find your rock! Instructor: Kelly Messer

Knitting 101 – Finger Knitting and Beyond This class will teach finger knitting to see how the yarn is woven to create a knitted strand. This strand can be used to create a scarf, headband, or other fun projects. Students will learn how to cast on and knit to create a hot pad. Lego Land Grades 2-5Become a Lego Brick Master! You’ll learn techniques to help build cool contraptions and work in teams to construct daily projects, like cars, planes, forts, and buildings! No “picky” eaters please as you will need to try a “no thank you bite.” You will learn how to make fun lunches that you can prepare all by yourself! No food allergies please! Mythology, Monsters and MoreCome travel to Mount Olympus on a magical journey to visit gods and goddesses as they embark on various adventures. Flex your muscles with Hercules and then chat with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Toss out thunderbolts with Zeus and then dive deep into the blue ocean with Poseidon, his brother. Go on a treasure hunt with Jason as he searches for the Golden Fleece, but be careful! Look out for Medusa, the evil gorgon. If she catches you, she will turn you into stone with one evil look. In this class, students will read various heroic adventures, view presentations, complete art projects, journey on treasure hunts, and solve puzzles and mazes all pertaining to ancient Greek mythology. Outdoorsmanship What can we do out there? The great outdoors offers an endless arena for exploration. Learn solar time telling, basics of Morse and Semaphore signaling, getting clean water from the ground, first aid, plant and animal ID, making temporary furniture, orienteering and a variety of nature games. Party Animals Grades 4-9 We will learn every aspect of planning an animal party from designing invitations to decorating cupcakes. Kids will also learn how to create balloon art, practice face painting, and party games. Detailed instructions for each activity will be added to your very own party planner binder. Party in the U.S.A. Keep the party going all day! Learn how to play classic party games like Charades, Win Lose or Draw, Uno, Skip-bo, and SWAP. Learn the steps to party dances like The Cupid Shuffle, The Cha Cha Slide, and other popular group dances. Pickle Ball You will feel like a winner playing this exciting net court game! This mini-tennis game can be played on any hard surface, and is ideal for small spaces using wood paddle racquets and a plastic poly ball with holes. Pokémon Card Battles Grades 2-5 During this introductory session in Trading Card Battles, students can bring their Pokémon cards and discover the basics of developing a strategy, building a competitive deck and competing against others in a tournament style setting. Recorder Karate Grades 3-9 Have you ever wanted to play a wind instrument? Do you have a recorder at home collecting dust? Do you already know how to play? Rockets Grades 4-9The ever popular Rocket Camp is back again. You will discover principals of atmospheric and space flight. Role Playing Adventures Grades 5-9 Would you like to be a brave adventurer who quests around the world, battling dragons and orcs while exploring ancient tombs? In this class, students will mix elements of writing, acting, role-playing, social interaction, public speaking and creative problem solving to overcome unique obstacles while interacting with other students. Science Action Have lots of fun learning all kinds of science. You’ll study organic chemistry by making plastic from milk. Make a Cartesian diver during physics. Discover how interesting science can be with lots of fun hands-on activities. ScrapbookingScrapbooking is all about getting those photos out of shoeboxes and off the computer into albums where they can be seen and shared. The papers and accessories now available give us many creative options for doing more than just filing photos in an album – scrapbooking is a creative hobby! No experience or expertise is required – it’s as simple as cutting and gluing. Printed pictures are required. All you need are a few basic materials and some ideas. Shark Biology / Ichthyology Have lots of fun learning about different species of sharks. Explore shark anatomy with a real specimen. Dig into identifying shark teeth; enjoy predator-prey relationships and amazing adaptation games; learn to use a microscope to observe shark scales and fish scales. Perform a fish osmosis lab experiment and wacky water chemistry experiments. Get your shark on with these cool crafts: shark hat, shark tooth fossil and the Japanese art of fish printing on T-shirts. Sign Language: The Silent Voice Have you ever wished you could communicate with a deaf person or talk to a friend and only both of you know what you are talking about? Well, wish no more!! Join me as we have fun learning the foundational skills you will need to communicate such as the alphabet, numbers and fun games using sign language. SoccerLearn soccer fundamentals and techniques such as ball control, correct forms for the different types of passes, playing positions with and without the ball, when and where to shoot, and basic offense and defense patterns (defending and scoring). Students will have a chance to practice the skills they have learned in three-on-three as well as full-field games. See what you have learned and evaluate your progress. This step-by-step approach to teach inexperienced players will help the student to feel the success of having learned new skills. You will learn to stretch correctly, lead a crowd in a cheer, basic dance moves and how to be a leader. A spirit award will be given each day to the MVSL (Most Valuable Spirit Leader) and a performance held at the end of class. TennisStudents will be using tennis rackets and tennis balls that are just right for them as we develop knowledge, stroke production, consistency, hand-eye coordination, physical skills, motor movement, strength, health and self-esteem. The course consists of a warm-up exercise, instructional presentation, and tennis-related games that are designed for safety and fun. Trading Card Battles Grades 5-9 Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, and Magic: The Gathering. If you have a deck you have constructed and want to practice playing someone else or if you want to learn to play a new trading card game other than the one you know, this is the class for you! You will use your own constructed deck to compete in mock battles, draft tournaments, one-on-one tournaments and doubles tournaments. Put your critical thinking skills to the test! Trash to Treasure: Eco-Art Grades 3-9 Did you know that you make beautiful and useful creations with stuff that you throw away? Reduce, Reuse and Recycle by learning how to make your masterpiece and keeping it from being garbage. You will also learn the responsibility of helping the Earth by doing so. Make wonderful projects such as wind chimes, bowls, sun catchers, denim bags, and more. You will see endless possibilities on recycled creations. Instructor: Connie Bame

Underwater Art Exploration Grades 5-9 Create a work of art inspired by Wyland. Study the coral reef and its inhabitants through painting and sculpture. Students will learn new watercolor techniques and receive instruction on drawing sharks, sea turtles and dolphins. Incorporate all your new skills into a phenomenal mixed media collage.
