The Early Years Foundation Stage is a distinct phase of primary education that takes place from when a child is born until they are

five. The curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage should underpin all future learning by supporting and developing each

child in the seven areas of the curriculum: Personal, Social and Emotional development

Communication and Language Physical Development

Literacy Mathematics

Understanding of the World Expressive Arts and Design

And foster key skills for learning called the Characteristics of Effective Learning.

For more information please see the ‘What Happens When’

document on our school website.

Inputs (when adults teach key concepts in small

or larger groups) happen at least three times

throughout the day. Adults use a variety of

published programmes e.g ‘Letters and Sounds’

for phonics and ‘White Rose’ for maths, or tried

and tested sessions to promote ‘Awe and

Wonder’ that cover all the areas of the EYFS

curriculum in a systematic program of learning

opportunities tailored to the developmental need

of all children. These sessions are practical, hands

on and use a variety of resources and teaching

techniques to engage learners and keep learning

exciting. They can happen anywhere in our school

– not just on the carpet!

All interactions that adults have with children are

opportunities for a ‘teachable moment’. We will

note those that tell us something new about a

child on Tapestry or through paper notation

systems that help us keep up with the exciting

and dynamic changes that are happening for each

child at this stage of their development.

What we learn about them, helps us to plan for

their next steps: usually this takes place ‘in the

moment’ with skilled adults moving the child on

to the next level of challenge. This could be as

simple as offering them an adjective to use to

describe something (moving on their language

development) or encouraging them to have a go

at doing up their own zip.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Policy The children are at the centre of our provision.

We are here for their wellbeing, development and to help

encourage and support a thirst for learning and life.

To support our good practice in the EYFS curriculum we follow:

“Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework “ 2017

“Development Matters” Guidance on Child Development

“Keeping Children Safe in Education” (published annually)

Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board guidance

Oxfordshire County Council’s EYFS advisory team support

Ofsted “Inspection Handbook for Schools”

Ofsted’s “Teaching and Play in the Early Years: a balancing

act?”

Information about each child’s achievements can

be accessed via their online Tapestry Learning

Journal; parents/carers will receive login details

shortly after their child starts in Nursery or

Reception.

Parents and carers can also help us to understand

how each child is developing at home by adding

things too. We welcome their feedback, likes and

comments on what we celebrate.

It is also a useful tool to celebrate what a child has

achieved in school with them.

We have two parent/carer meetings with a child’s

teacher/key person through the year. This is a

chance to talk about their progress and will link to

transitions into and out of this phase of a child’s

learning journey.

Our environment is an important tool in teaching

our children how to engage with learning.

Adults encourage children to choose what they

would like to do, indoors and out.

Adults model how to play with and look after our

resources.

The vast majority of what children can see on

shelves is available to play with at all times. We

all work together to tidy up after resources have

been played with; this is a key part of the

respectful learning that we promote.

While resources are changed periodically, our

environment belongs to the children – we teach

them about ownership as well as enjoyment.

All adults focus on showing children how

to learn as well as what to learn.
