Surrounded by the glittering Mediterranean Sea, the Balearic island of Mallorca has long been a magnet for sun and indulgence. While superyachts jostle in the marinas of its southern shores, the breathtaking wild beauty of its northwest landscapes entices visitors seeking more tranquil pleasures. It’s here, tucked in the lap of the UNESCO-listed Tramuntana Mountains, that you’ll find Belmond La Residencia.

CHAPTER TWO

A Warm Welcome-------

You’ll travel along a winding mountain road to reach our secluded hideaway, nestled behind the enchanting stone cottages of Deià

Walk through immaculate gardens heady with the scent of roses and enter our warm, honey-coloured buildings. Breathe deeply: you’ve arrived.

Deià has a history of attracting artists, writers, musicians and poets (most famously Robert Graves) to settle here, so inspiring are the surroundings. A special light bounces off the Tramuntana Mountains and sparkles on the waves. Wandering through the village you’ll see canvases propped outside cosy studios or artists strolling off, easel under arm, to capture a new scene. This artistic vibe is reflected throughout the hotel, where our acclaimed Sa Tafona art gallery displays vibrant local works and our gardens are dotted with intriguing sculptures. If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at painting or sculpture, our resident artists give one-to-one lessons. Or simply settle at a table in Café Miró and admire walls lined with original works by the Catalan artist who found his muse in Mallorca.

Building on two medieval manor houses, we’ve created Mallorca’s most magical hotel

Our striking hotel is formed of a cluster of buildings: two 16th-century manors, Son Moragues and Son Canals, 18th-century Son Fony, and Son Fony II, a new structure that blends seamlessly with the others. In an original olive press you’ll find the atmospheric El Olivo restaurant. We also boast a medieval watchtower believed to have been built by Cistercian monks.

The buildings were turned into a hotel in 1984. Subsequently, Belmond purchased it and began its transformation into the luxurious escape you see today. With exteriors and interiors crafted in traditional local style and furnished with antiques, the hotel exudes authentic Mallorcan charm. The impressive dry-stone walls and terracing showcase a local technique first introduced by Arab settlers. Our flourishing gardens provide freshly cut flowers for the rooms and tasty produce for the kitchens. Make sure to sample our extra virgin olive oil and marmalade made with juicy ingredients from our own groves.

We continue to innovate and enhance. In 2017, we opened six fabulous new suites with outdoor dining spaces and mountain views. In 2018, we unveil a spectacular suite designed by Deià’s latest artistic resident, British designer Matthew Williamson.

A Mediterranean Masterpiece


Rooms

Styled for serenity, our individually designed rooms are spacious, calming havens that blend rustic white walls and terracotta tiled floors with Mallorcan antiques and bright local artworks. Large, shuttered windows look out over lush greenery and mountain vistas. Our airy Single Rooms are rich in natural materials and traditional furniture. Classic Double Rooms are designed to complement the architecture of the old manor house. Superior Double Rooms offer charming additions, such as comfortable sofas and queen-size beds. Sink into a plush four-poster in our Deluxe Double Rooms, which also offer relaxing sitting areas and marble bathrooms.

Junior Suites

Verdant gardens and sweeping terraces bring you closer to the landscape in these stunning personal havens. The Superior Junior Suites are peppered with authentic island antiques. Admire the views from your own balcony, terrace or small garden, relax in a cosy sitting area and luxuriate in the marble bathroom. Located in Son Canals or the Tramuntana building, our Deluxe Junior Suites afford panoramic vistas from a traditional terrace. Or soak up the sun from the enchanting garden terrace and plunge pool of our Executive Junior Suites, sanctuaries of space and calm.

Awake in your queen-size bed and pad out through the arched doorway to a cool, spacious sitting area. The sun is already streaming through the windows. Step onto your private terrace to greet it and admire the picturesque village. Take a dip in your plunge pool and you’re ready for the day. This is the experience in our gorgeous Exclusive Suites. The Villa

Our wonderful self-catering villa allows you to embrace the freedom of independent accommodation while enjoying all the facilities of our hotel. With dynamic Chef Guillermo Méndez at the helm and an unrivalled setting in a medieval olive mill, it’s no wonder El Olivo is among Mallorca’s most sought-after restaurants. With a collection of over 800 artworks arrayed around our hotel and grounds, Belmond La Residencia is a joy for art lovers. In Sa Tafona, admire outstanding works by over 85 local contemporary artists, including many by George Sheridan (1923-2008), who was responsible for starting the collection when the hotel first opened.

Today, the burgeoning collection is curated by Cecilie Sheridan, who also leads weekly Walk and Talk tours of the village. Visit the studios of longtime Deià artists, such as David Templeton and Arturo Rhodes, as Cecilie provides fascinating insights into Deià’s artistic roots.

We’re proudly home to one of Spain’s largest permanent sculpture gardens. Stroll through the fragrant grounds alighting on pieces by both up-and-coming and established sculptors. There’ll be something new each time you visit.
