Argyll is unmistakable, especially by its seaboard: with its distinctive mix of mossy, lush woodland, and long and sheltered sea-lochs with rocky tide-lines edged with orange seaweed - and breathtaking island views.

Scotland’s Richest Prehistoric Landscape?Kilmartin Glen in Mid-Argyll contains an astonishing legacy of prehistoric and historic sites, including Dunadd, fortress of ancient kings and arguably the birthplace of the Scottish nation, as well as standing stones, rock carvings and burial cairns. Kilmartin House Museum provides a focus for your exploration.

The Sea-Roads of the WestSea travel is part of the heritage of the area. Visits to the islands are straightforward thanks to a comprehensive ferry network. There are also plenty of opportunities for cruising, seal or whale watching - and even a trip to the fearsome whirlpool of the Corryvreckan!

Oban - more than a Ferry GatewayWhen the railway arrived here in 1880, contemporary guidebooks described it as ‘the Charing Cross of the Highlands’. Today the town is still a key centre for ferry links to the Hebridean islands with a busy hub, a wide choice of accommodation, restaurants, pubs and shops.

Mull, Iona and StaffaCastles, a narrow-gauge railway, dramatic seascapes and opportunities for watching wildlife (including white-tailed sea eagles) are among the attractions of Mull. Many visitors also make the short crossing to Iona to visit the restored abbey and white-sand beaches. Mull also offers trips to the spectacular little island of Staffa. Its basalt columns and Fingal’s Cave were the inspiration for the composer Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides.

How to use this folderThis folder is full of information on the best places to visit in this area. At the front you will find leaflets and information on local attractions, followed by a new section on More Great Things to See & Do and Places to Eat. For information on attractions further afield, have a look at the national map and ‘Things to See and Do in the Rest of Scotland’ listing at the centre of this folder. This is followed by leaflets on other attractions, many of which may be within easy reach of where you are staying.

The Whisky Coast Tangy, salty, smoky - however the taste is described, Islay is the place to discover the famous island single malts, having 8 of the 14 world-class distilleries in this area. It also has the heritage of Clan Donald to explore at Finlaggan, as well as the astonishing carving of the 8th-century Kildalton Cross. The Whisky Coast stretches through Argyll and on to Skye providing the opportunity to tour and taste.

InveraraySimply one of the most handsome of Scottish towns, Inveraray was planned and built all-of-a-piece by the 3rd Duke of Argyll from 1743. Courthouse, churches and bell tower are all civic buildings of note, while Inveraray Jail is a splendid re-creation of a 19th-century country prison (complete with live actors!). Inveraray Castle, seat of the Dukes of Argyll, is nearby.

Down to KintyreCrinan Canal, used by the 19th-century Loch Fyne herring fleet, is now almost exclusively recreational. Knapdale has gentle scenery, mediaeval stone carvings and Castle Sween. Beyond Tarbert, the road down the peninsula to Campbeltown offers superb views west to Islay and Gigha.

Glorious GardensThe soft airs of Argyll mean a big choice of gardens

to visit, from the sheltered woodlands where camellias thrive at Achamore House on Gigha, to the rhododendron rich gardens at Arduaine near Oban and Crarae near Inveraray.

Scotland’s Longest LochLoch Awe is Scotland’s longest loch, 25.47 miles (41km). Enjoy beautiful views of loch and mountain from the Duncan Ban MacIntyre Monument above Dalmally, or visit Kilchurn Castle or Cruachan Visitor Centre.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

The Mactaggart Leisure Centre is owned by the people of Islay and Jura.

It took 10 years for us to raise £1 million to build our own swimming pool.

Before that our children used to have to learn to swim in the choppy and cold waters

of the surrounding seas and lochs.

Today 21 years after we opened our charity relies on grants and donations

to keep our facilities open. Through joining our Friends scheme you will

help to ensure we can provide swimming and leisure facilities for future.

Explore a world of plants

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, founded in 1670, is a world renowned centre for plant research, conservation and education. Its four remarkable Gardens – the “Botanics” in Edinburgh; the mountain-side Benmore in Argyll; Dawyck in the wooded hills of the Scottish Borders; and Logan on a Gulf Stream warmed peninsula in Galloway – differ in topography, soils and climate, enabling an exceptionally wide range of plants to be grown. Together they constitute one of the richest plant collections on Earth, with more that 15,000 species in cultivation.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored and supported through Grant-in-Aid by the Scottish Government’s Environment and Forestry Directorate (ENFOR).

SCOTLAND’S RICHESTPREHISTORICLANDSCAPE

Kilmartin Museum is situated at the heart of Kilmartin Glen in Argyll. It is a beautiful and ancient place with unique archaeology and natural heritage. Kilmartin Museum’s mission is to inspire and

educate people by interpreting, explaining and conserving the internationally important archaeological landscape, artefacts and natural heritage of Kilmartin Glen.

Kilmartin Museum is family friendly and offers information and hands on exhibits to help you explore the relationship between people and the land. Following your Museum visit go out into the landscape

to explore the Temple Wood stone circle and the linear cemetery.

There are free guided glen walks every Wednesday during the summer. Led by knowledgeable volunteer guides, these walks are designed to enable visitors to the Museum to get out into the Glen and learn more about what makes Kilmartin Glen special. There is no charge for the walk, just sign in

at the Museum Shop on the day anytime before 1.30pm.

There are more than 800 historic and prehistoric sites within 6 miles of the village of Kilmartin including standing stones at Ballymeanoch, a stone circle at Temple Wood and a linear cemetery of cairns. At the hill fort of Dunadd, home to the earliest Kingdom of the Scots, you can see carved

footprints believed to have been linked to an ancient coronation ceremony. There are a number of rock art sites including Ormaig and Achnabreac. Kilmartin churchyard houses the best collection of West Highland grave slabs in Scotland. Most are of the “Loch Awe School” which tended towards

designs representing armoured men, swords and spears. You can also see fantastical beasts and interlaced foliage patterns.

The ruined Carnassarie Castle, 1 mile north of Kilmartin, is in a commanding location overlooking Kilmartin Glen and is well worth a visit. From the top of the Castle there are spectacular views over

Kilmartin Glen and beyond.

Book Online now at: www.jacobitetrain.com

The line used in filming the Harry Potter movies.

THE JOURNEYFort William to Mallaig

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting at the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan.

Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer’s day, you can see the “Small Isles” of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.

The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero”.

FORT WILLIAM TO MALLAIG

HOW TO GET TO FORT WILLIAM...

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the south end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the ‘Harry Potter’ films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause here, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Once stopped in Glenfinnan station there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. ‘The Jacobite’ may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The end of the line, Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye and the Small Isles. Here you will find a wide choice of restaurants and pubs You might also like to take a walk around the harbour during the lunchtime stopover.
