Welcome to the 2018 Visual Media Conference. The Visual Media Conference 2018 looks to expose the effectiveness of colour in marketing and communication and explore the hype around Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Consumer Behaviour. The theme reflects the heightened ‘sense’ of the aesthetics in marketing while offering a unique opportunity to see the very latest marketing technology, discussed and demonstrated by an international panel of experts.

The VMC brings together a hub of like-minded individuals to learn, play and be astounded. Be prepared to be totally engaged with the exciting speakers, exhibitions and demos while networking with your peers. This year’s conference is set to be more diverse than ever.

The challenge that VMC sets itself each year is to strike the balance between novelty and gimmick, killer app or QR code. Curating the conference continues to reveal best practice in the region and leading-edge innovators who want to share this platform – it’s been a revelation.

Our original focus on colour and communications has been assaulted by innovation in technology. So, we’ve combined the very best of both worlds, marketing analytics and behavioural insights from the influence of the primordial brain to the mind-bending effects of mixed-reality – setting out to let you decide the answer to the question, “VR-so What?”

We haven’t lost sight of the value of case studies and we’ve kept the power of story-telling to deliver a unique blend of insights for our industry. Each year we are blessed by sponsors who allow this event to be ‘free to attend’, that’s a privilege we share. Once again the founding sponsors have raised the bar. With HP’s solid support and our own branding even sharper from Jaywing implemented by ProCo to transform the Rose Bowl.

Be prepared for some surprises brought to you by our own BPIF Marketing team, kept on track in the north by Meeka Walwyn-Lewis. How do they do it?

Enjoy your day

RobertRobert McClements, Curator, Visual Media Conference President, CDi

The Visual Media Conference continues to go from strength to strength, and this year’s event, the fifth, looks set to be the best yet.

VMC 2018 again brings together a range of international speakers offering a wealth of knowledge and experience, spanning the full spectrum of marketing communications. From Jonathan Sands, Chairman of Elmwood, who’ll give the agency take on visual media, to ‘media provocateur’ James Marks from DoubleMe, known as a ‘transformative tech tinkerer’, it’s going to be a fascinating and thought-provoking day.

As usual, VMC is about more than the insights from this great range of speakers. There’s the interactive exhibitors too, including Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, so make sure you take full advantage of these multi-sensory, immersive experiences.

Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters who have helped create and shape this year’s event. And finally, make sure you pick up your pair of free VR goggles, the day won’t be the same without them!

10:30 Biomotive Triggers

How can we build deep subconscious consumer engagement and ensure brands are stored in the favourite’s part of our brain?

For brands to be part of the consideration set, people must be able to emotionally connect with a brand. By engaging a consumer’s subconscious you can make it easier for them to intuitively find, connect with and buy a brand.

Jonathan explains how Biomotive Triggers (developed at Elmwood in collaboration with Bradford University School of Management) can analyse these emotions.

Jonathan Sands OBEChairman Elmwood

14:00 Creating packaging that’s visible on shelf and memorable in use

Packaging that combines sensorial cues with clever functional features enhances the enjoyment of a product at every touch point in use. It helps shoppers to find products and brands that are familiar, or new products that are worth knowing more about.

The Retail Institute will tell you about the science behind sensory marketing and how consumer insights help create more successful innovations. Parkside Flexibles will share how their creative process and technical knowledge combines these cues with functional features to create packaging that’s visible on shelf and memorable in use. They will also explain how they can help designers access this knowledge for themselves.

15:00 Turning a city technicolour

How can a brand challenge preconceived expectations of a city?

Is a bold visual identity and a confident tone of voice enough to transform perception from black and white into amazing technicolour?

Armed with 365 days of transformative culture, Phil charts the journey of Hull’s UK City of Culture year through the eyes of marketing and brand. From scandalous blue to mischievous pink, Phil will share his views of the invaluable role that colour has played to tell the story of people, place and culture in the city of Hull.

Phil BattyDirector of Public Engagement & LegacyHull UK City of Culture 2017

15:30 Sensploration: Helping customers come to their senses

In today’s social media-driven insta-culture, consumers have become somewhat numb to the information they are bombarded with on a daily basis, making it increasingly difficult for brands to engage them in any meaningful way. While this may pose a threat to more traditional marketing practices, with 70% of Millennials (in the U.S.) seeking experiences that stimulate their senses and offer them a feeling of authentic connection, it also offers a great opportunity for brands to find innovative ways to foster organic emotional connections with their customers and cut through the noise.

In this talk, Kim Arazi will give contemporary examples of how multisensory experiences, combined with new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, give brands the chance to engage with their customers in a more authentic and impactful way than ever before, gaining their attention by helping them ‘come to their senses’.
