My dear Parishioners, This past week, Fathers Patrick, Luis and I joined Auxiliary Bishops Joel Konzen and Bernard Shelsinger and over 70 other priests of the Archdiocese on retreat at the Brasstown Valley Resort in Young Harris, Georgia for this year’s Priest Retreat. The Retreat Director was Benedictine Abbot Justin Brown, of St. Joseph’s Abbey in St. Benedict, Louisiana. The retreat began Monday afternoon and ended at noon on Friday. It was a wonderful experience. You may ask: “What is the difference between a retreat and a revival?” Actually, there is no difference as far as the goal is concerned which is to stir up the faith of those taking part in the event. The difference lies in how it is done. A retreat can last any length of time, usually more than a day. One can make a private retreat or join a group. A group retreat always is led by individuals qualified to provide thought provoking reflections on the Scriptures or other spiritual topics. Abbot Justin Brown spoke on Discipleship and drew from the Gos-pels marvelous examples of true discipleship including the blind beggar Bartimaeus, the sinful woman who anointed Jesus’ feet, and the Samaritan woman at the well, and so much more. Communal and private prayer are essential parts of a good retreat as well as adequate time for personal spiritual reading and reflection. There is also time for socializing during meals and leisure time. A good retreat always allows for physical rest. During our retreat, the evenings were always free for personal pursuits. The rooms were comfortable and provided that needed private space. In addition to the chapel where Mass was concelebrated daily and morning and evening pray-ers chanted, a special room was set apart for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. There is no need for me to describe a revival since most parishioners are familiar with the format. The one coming up in November will be our fifth consecutive two-day revival. A revival usually takes place in a local place of worship or a hall while a retreat is ideally made away at a retreat house or mon-astery, or in our case, a resort which could accommodate such a large number of priests. Whether retreat or revival, our souls need nourishment. Either experience can provide that essential element of our Christian lives. —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

25º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 22 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 2019

P. Luis C.P.
