MathsBoth KS3 and KS4 pupils at Smiths Wood Sports College have three hours of mathematics every week. In Year 7, sets are of mixed ability. Sets are streamed in year 9, as this is when the preparation for GCSE study begins. A mathematics challenge club is run to stretch the most able pupils, and they are encouraged to solve more unusual problems that they may not get to see in the classroom. For those who attend this club, there is an opportunity to take part in the UKMT Team Mathematics Challenge. We also have a support programme in place, called Power of 2, which aims to give extra help in the form of one-on-one sessions during mathematics lessons each week.

Throughout Year 7, students study English through the Thematic curriculum, working closely with the Humanities Department to encourage strong cross-curricular links. Students are encouraged to learn in an independent fashion and develop confidence. The Year Seven English curriculum allows students access to a range of texts, cultures and experiences; our students delve deep in to the worlds of novels, unravel the mysteries of poetry, and explore the theatrical delights of Shakespeare. Moving into Year 8, students begin to develop their poetry analysis even further by reading and discussing poems linked with Identity. In studying Shakespeare, the students get to meet the cackling witches of Macbeth or meet the fiery tempers of Kate in The Taming of the Shrew.
