CHRISTIAN FAITH FORMATION
Living the Advent Spirit: Joy
Our joy doesn’t depend on what is going on in our lives or in the world, or the people who we are with.
Our joy doesn’t depend on the gifts we give or the gifts we find under the tree.
Our joy doesn’t come from our jobs, our family, our relationships, our finances, or our success.
Our joy doesn’t come from what we have on earth.
No earthly thing can ever give us complete joy.
Our joy comes from God.
Our joy is the same joy that flooded the hearts of the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, the hosts of heaven, and Mary and Joseph and that still has the power to overwhelm our hearts with rejoicing.
Our joy is a gift. It is the gift that you gave us that first Christmas in Jesus Christ.
Our joy is encompassed in our Savior, King Jesus.
Lord, flood our hearts with joy this Advent season as we reflect on the good news of Jesus’ birth.
Ponder With the Pope
YOU ARE NEAR
"This time of Advent is characterized by the theme of
closeness. God's closeness to humanity. The son of God
comes into Mary's womb in order to become human,
and she welcomes him. Thus, in a unique way, God drew
near to us and took on flesh. To us too, in a different
way, God draws near with his grace in order to enter our
life and offer the gift of his son. What do we do? Do we
welcome him, let him draw near, or do we reject him, or
push him away? Mary and Joseph help us to assume an
attitude of openness in order to welcome the son of God
into our concrete life, in our flesh. Both spur us to always
seek God's will and to follow it with full trust."
Reflection: How and when have I most experienced
God's closeness during this Advent?
Living the Advent Spirit: With the gift of our
savior so near, it is now time to make our joy
visible! Decorate your tree and light the way
for the glorious coming of Jesus.
DECEMBER 23RD, 2018 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
The National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church
It is Christmas time. I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but I use this as a time to analyze
where my life is headed. To see where I have been and where I am going. In other words, change. I
believe God uses change constantly to shake us up or to get our attention.
Think of the change Mary went through as a young girl hearing that she would carry the Christ child.
Think of all the scrutiny she faced as a single woman. How easy was this for Joseph? And of course,
Herod hearing that there was King born to replace him.
God sent his son to save the people from all the evil that had taken over. It was time for “change”
and Christmas was the time to start the transition. Through the life of Jesus, we saw how he led by
example. Jesus kindly and lovingly gave us a roadmap to peace and happiness. Jesus taught us to
love one another.
As I contemplate my “changes” and prepare for the New Year, I hope love and kindness become my
main objective. I hope to “change” anything about me that does not show peace and yes, love for all
I encounter. Christmas is a time for “change”
God Bless us everyone during this sacred season. Merry Christmas to us all- and to all a good night!

A good memory I have from my childhood is Christmas time; spending the night before Christmas waiting and anxious to receive my presents. As a
child I didn’t understand the numbers on the calendar, but I was able to perceive that something going on. I was looking at the signs: the lights, deco-
rations, cold weather, music, and the feeling of expectation. Then, I just asked the same question every day of my mother “Is Christmas today?”
In some ways the Church wants us to experience the same feeling. The first reading presents us God’s promise to send His Son for our salvation. In
the second reading, St. Paul tells us about “sacrifices and offerings” and indeed mentions that Jesus, the Son of God, becomes the sacrifice and the
offering. So, Jesus is the answer to the Psalm when said: “Lord, make us turn to You; let us see Your face and we shall be saved.” Jesus is the way
used by the Father to show us His face and to saves us.
This is closely related to the Gospel. This is a representation of how God works. Mary, having Jesus in her womb, took the first step to visit Eliza-
beth. And, God is always doing the same. He called Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, and Paul. He chose Jeremiah even before giving him life. He is always
calling us. This Advent He wants to have an encounter with us. We are call to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation to look for a more close rela-
tionship with the Savior. Indeed, He is using me right now with this writing to call you one more time. What other sign do you want to see?
